On metagaming and Diplomacy - a few quotes
It seems that quite a few people here have a negative opinion on so-called "metagaming". Metagaming is a term for using information that is not usually available inside the game.
I think that metagaming IS the real Diplomacy. I've collected a few quotes by famous Diplomacy players that might be interesting for you:

WalnutCreek Game...
It's been in the "Open" tab because it is paused, and I finally opened up the game and saw they haven't been online for 500-700 days!!!! Someone should delete that game/tell them by email to draw/cancel. I'm sick of looking at that game.

Request for a Tournament Director - Grand Festive Diplomacy Tournament
This was a really great tournament which last began 2 years ago now. Since then thewonderllama has been unable to run this tournament. Much as I like to be reigning champion in a diplomacy tournament, I want to see this tournament revived. If there is anyone interested in reviving and running this tournament, I would love to hear from them, and will help them to realise it.

It's almost over and I hope Austria learnt a very important lesson. Don't stab the gut who is holding down the stalemate line. He may just give it up.

CDing should reduce your ability to regenerate
Maybe this is just annoyance at having a game ruined, but I think CDing regularly should reduce how many points you get back when you go under 100.

Retreat after dislodgement
Suppose an army tries to move from A to B, however, it is being bounced and doesn't make it to B. In addition, another army (with support) enters A, so the army that was in A is forced to retreat.
Can it retreat to B?

God Created The Heaven And The Earth...And Deleted Humanity As A Facebook Friend
Just a fun idea I had at 4:30 in the morning--what if God had a Facebook account? (I already feel sillier just typing that lol...) :p
Is God the type who has like 1,000 friends and adds every person he meets, or the kind who has maybe 50 at the most and rarely talks too much...has he deleted us? Who's he friends with? What apps does he use? Or is God that guy who goes "Facebook is DUMB!"...and is a closeted Facebook fiend? ;) (Just have fun with it, no fighting....)

Notification Problem with a Game
On my home page, a message came up for a game, "This user was banned, see game for details." However, it's a "No in-game messaging, Anonymous players" game, so can't see the chatbox.
Not a problem as it would just mean we wouldn't details of who was banned - but the notification at the top of each page for that game won't disappear as the 'Global Notification' is still being marked as unread.

Donations
I didn't realise until today, but there is a donation link on the faq page... Trying to raise a little bit of capital (for whatever kestas chooses to spend it on)

I feel the enjoyment i have gotten from several years of playing diplomacy here is worth the investment.

@Draug - Responding to attacks and singling people out are two different things.

Even YOUR stupid ass has to be able to see that.

"Suggesting that the members donate, if they can, IS admirable. All of the follow up "Ooooo look at me. I donated. " is self aggrandizement."

Glad you could make it so concise.

Now, it is at least clear to someone (ie me) who has already read this whole thread. Can you point out a bit of this follow up? i've been more than guilty of bumping this thread back to the front page after it had died.

Lastly, as i may have pointed out before, To 'lead by example', you need to make yourself seen - hence while you may see something as self-aggrandizement, i see it as trying to make a point.

As MadMarx said/implied 5 USD may not be much for one person to donate, but it all adds up.

Also I would apoligise for trying your patiences, but your choice to invest time in this thread will not lead me to an guilt/shame. If we try your patiences feel free to give up and ignore us - though i do admit that i like argueing for the sake of it, and the whole point of this thread is to make noise, so you are helping - I think i'd rather you stayed...

@Marx - ...I notice that you did not provide the sentence which was used as an example for the definition you provided for the word "donate".

I wonder why? (lol)......
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK, obviously Marx does not have the courage of his "convictions" or he would not have glossed over this challenge. Here is the full definition WITH the accompanying examples which he saw fit to exclude.......

do·nate
[doh-neyt, doh-neyt]
verb, -nat·ed, -nat·ing.
–verb (used with object)
1.
to present as a gift, grant, or contribution; make a donation of, as to a fund or cause: to donate used clothes to the Salvation Army.
–verb (used without object)
2.
to make a gift, grant, or contribution of something; give; contribute: They donate to the Red Cross every year.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well?.........

So calling me a simpleton was responding to what attack? I pointed out that the donate does not mean (implicitly or explicitly) charity. I provided an example of how donations aren't necessarily charitable (the freeware development industry). No part of that was an attack, just a correction to the statement that donation implies charity, something you have yet to admit was a false statement.

So, if I call you an asshat for not admitting that their is not an implication of charity behind the word donation, is that responding to an attack or singling you out? By your definition, any response to anything you say is attacking you. So I guess that means pointing out your asshattery is a response to your attack on me and not singling you out.

By the way, it is both a response to your attack on me *and* singling you out. the two are not mutually exclusive, despite what your 8th grade Canadian education system may tell you. I mean, you all do either move to the US if you have any brains or become lumberjacks, sailors on freighters, or fishermen after all. Not exactly jobs that require high end educations.

Mapleleaf, are you five years old? Because "Yes it does!" is more or less what I'd expect out of my five year old nephew when people tell him he's wrong.

If you are winning an argument, you don't need to claim victory. It would be obvious to anybody paying attention.

I mean, you could, with just as much justification, say that you're the reincarnation of Napoleon Bonaparte. However, again, just because you say that doesn't make it so.

What it does is make you immature. Or crazy. Or both.

Well, that is a neat string of words, sir. It doesn't actually mean anything.

I expect better out of our leading troll. Please come back with something better, my palate is far to jaded to enjoy something so lacking in flavor.

That sentence could have just as easily said "they donate money to the casino every paycheck." They choice of using a charity or not in a definition does not indicate implication at all. It is just an editor's choice used as an example.

Yet another epic fucking fail from the junior high drop out fishmonger to the north.

Oh, and I would have retired by now (at just 44) if 9/11 hadn't tanked every stock I owned. Many of those businesses are no more, including one where my investment of $20,000 was worth over $500,000 on 9/10 and dropped to just over $2,000 when the market reopened. It then closed it's doors because their corporate offices were in tower one.
mapleleaf (0 DX)

@Draug - Don't you mean "the retired junior high drop out fishmonger to the north"?

No need to answer my last question, Draug, I'll do it for you.

You, with your fancy American education, have just successfully sucked up to a WOMAN for your wanker computer job.

You're my hero, buddy.

Anyway, it was not my intention to slag orathaic for his thread. I heartily approve of it.

Peace.

Actually, I took her offer and bumped it up 10K over what she wanted to offer me. And in america, we aren't sexist pigs like you fishmongers. A woman with a MBA is my superior. So what?

Oh, and I may have a woman for a boss at work but you have one running your whole fucking life.

" I'm effectively(mrs mapleleaf won't let me) retired at 48."

So, mrs mapleleaf is in charge huh? And you think my havign a female boss for 40 hours a week is bad?! Dude, you are so pussy whipped. I'd tell her "I'm retired, period. No more working, so get over it." I tell my wife when I'm going to the casino. I don't even have to ask. I tell my wife when I've changed jobs. I don't discuss it with her. I make the money and support her, so she knows better than to give me any lip.
mapleleaf (0 DX)
30 Sep 10 UTC
Yes, mrs mapleleaf is in charge.

I'm OK with that.

Thank you though, for your kind advice.
Draugnar (0 DX)

And I'm OK with having a woman who is my intellectual equal as my boss when I was able to negotiate 15% more than her initial planned offering.
