Who hates Americans and Why?t
I hate them because not only are they an interfering bunch and war mongerers, but also because they are loud mouths, can hear them from Oz with their loud talk, but they are arrogant, more than the french, and pompous... that's for starters

Orders
Make a point and click interface, like Playdiplomacy.com, because in gunboat, it is useful to make impossible orders to communicate
Alderian (2425 D(S))

Why so demanding? Besides, I think most people that have been here awhile know that the point and click interface has been planned and is going to happen eventually (as an option).

or a drag and drop interface, not a point and click one :)

rlumley (0 DX)
29 Jun 10 UTC
A. Point and click would suck.

B. It's coming anyway.

C. That fundamentally changes gunboats by allowing for much more communication. I'm not sure I'd support it.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
29 Jun 10 UTC
@rlumley,

What are the rules for FTF Gunboat? Surely, you can tell your units to do illegal moves. This would actually be making it more like FTF games, not less.
rlumley (0 DX)
29 Jun 10 UTC
Yeah, I thought about that, but I'm not sure anyone plays FTF gunboat... Gunboat was more or less an invention of the internet - it would just be awkward to have 7 people sit at a table and write orders...
ava2790 (232 D(S))
29 Jun 10 UTC
Gunboat was an invention of play by postal diplomacy or whatever mid 20th cebtry and illegal moves are standard in communication. There us a body of literature about this.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
29 Jun 10 UTC
@ava - I knew this, I've always liked gunboat don't worry.
@rlum - Its not coming as a replacement, just an option.
icevolcano (142 D)

Dating my age here, but I used to run a 'zine back in the 80s and 90s that featured regular dip, gunboat, and Machiavelli. We even played FTF gunboat a few times.....you need an 8th, game mastering....hilarious with open press read before and after the moves.....
figlesquidge (2131 D)
29 Jun 10 UTC
Surely its not gunboat if you have open press?
Draugnar (0 DX)
29 Jun 10 UTC
Gunboat on the Judges has always allowed invalid and illegal orders to help convey intent. why should it be any different here?
rcnrcn927 (313 D)

I made a suggestion and there's breakfast orders and ponies?
ava2790 (232 D(S))

Black press is the funnest variant. I think it would be easy to make as a variant on here. Just keep it public press, but make everyone's font black and no country names in press.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
30 Jun 10 UTC
Indeed, would be very simple to do.

I'd rather have the 71-74 Dodge Charger, black with white interior, as seen on Burn Notice. But give it to me in the R/T model with the 426 Hemi.

Oh, *hell* no! You did *not* just compare the best written spy show on TV to the "I can make a flamthrower out of a pair of tube socks, two rubber bands, and a can of spray paint" show...
rlumley (0 DX)
30 Jun 10 UTC
Don't forget, Draugnar, you need some flam for your flamthrower.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Jun 10 UTC
Yeah, I saw that right after clicking "Post Reply." Maybe it should have been a flanthrower. You know, everyone likes flan!
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

What have people thought of this current season of Burn Notice? In my opinion, they're going a bit over-the-top.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Jun 10 UTC
I like OTT. Hell, Bond and Bourne are virtually indestructible. At least Michael gets caught on occassion and needs others to help him escape.
vexlord (231 D)
30 Jun 10 UTC
Ummmm
"I can make a flamthrower out of a pair of tube socks, two rubber bands, and a can of spray paint"
well michael westin made a cell phone scanner out of a paper towel tube and a usb wire.....
so i say my point is valid
BTW macgyver was a spy.....
Burn Notice is the spiritual sequel to MacGyver, just without the mullet.
redcrane (1045 D)

this is one of the more rambling threads... continue
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Jun 10 UTC
Everything Michael Weston makes works. The spycraft is spot on. The demolitions and devices expert just makes certain the production leaves out certain key steps in what they show and descrive so it can't be repreated at home. MacGyver's stuff was crap. Seriously, it was all fake and wouldn't do the stuff it was proported to do.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Jun 10 UTC
Also note that Burn Notice rarely has Michael doing these things under pressure to escape. His loft is his workshop and that is where most of the devices are assembled with solder and the like. MacGyver was more A-Team "build it with what is handy" than buy equipment and assemble something you have done time and time before.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
30 Jun 10 UTC
I'm guessing that "Allow impossible orders" would be a check-box option.
rlumley (0 DX)
30 Jun 10 UTC
@ abge:

Yes. I agree. It's gone a bit over the top. But I really like the addition of a new cast member (I don't know if that's permanent or not...) It has gone from being undoubtedly 20 times better than anything else on television to only about 10 times better than anything else. 50% as good, but still freaking awesome.

And the cell phone scanner was far and beyond the most ridiculous thing they've ever pulled.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Jun 10 UTC
And don't forget the guns, LJTD! Guns and explosions, one of which the pacifist MacGyver hated and never used. Is ay blow 'em all to Hell, Fi!
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
30 Jun 10 UTC
@rlumley,

I'd agree. If I had to imagine, I'd say the counterintelligence guys stays on for about 6 episodes, which seems standard for the show.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Jun 10 UTC
Are we talking about the optical scanner which they used to scan the screen and get the list of cell phone numbers?
Alderian (2425 D(S))
30 Jun 10 UTC
Hey Draug, regarding his car, have you listened to the commentary tracks on the DVDs? They talk about regretting picking that car because it is a real PITA. I'm not sure of the exact details as it has been awhile. Just mentioning it.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Jun 10 UTC
No, I need to get them from Netflix for the extras some time. Some say it is a conglomeration of 71 to 74 parts.
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
01 Jul 10 UTC
Yes, there are slight differences between the Dodge Charger from each model year 1972, 72, 73 and 74. The car in Burn Notice is puzzling because it has features that are year-specific to 71, 72 and 73, so I think you're right. It certianly isn't a matching numbers car.

I've got to say the 1969-70 Dodge Charger is a much, much better looking car than the 71-74 model(s). Plus of course by 73-74 the engines were getting much less powerful due to changes in the law.
Draugnar (0 DX)
01 Jul 10 UTC
For curves, I like the 68-69 (General Lee) and it would look sharp in Black with white interior too. I always loved the GL as a car, but hated that stupid redneck rebel flag roof and 00 racing numbers paint job.

Pause please?
To everyone playing this game http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=31461, I would like to ask for a pause. I'm going away for the weekend and will be back approx Sunday 9 am AEST (Saturday 11 pm GMT). Please don't flame me as I can't ask this in game as it is a gunboat, and I would rather the players decide than ask for a moderator to do it which could leave some players confused.

Hey, I'm interested in joining a gunboat sometime, but honestly, I don't know how to signal my desires to other players let alone achieve my own goals. So, how does one play good gunboat?
