Boys with Toys
Whether it's "Rosebud..." or "Toy Story 3" (I have to see it still, but I'm already crying lol) the media seems to love to remind us of that nostalgic-but-sad-for-some fact...We ALL had a favorite toy or two...or many...
And now- they're gone, or stuffed in the attic.
Christmases, Channukahs, Birthdays...Nostalgia Galore- Favorite Toys, folks?

This Time on Philosophy Weekly: Americans, Fundamentalism, and Philosophy
I realize a good deal of Americans are likely moderate on this issue, but nevertheless, this has certainly affected me dearly in my life so far- in other countries, it seems, theological/philosophical ideas are more accepted in the mainstream; you may have your opinion, but you at least take into account all sides seriously. In America it seems to be more polarizing, "we're 100% right, full stop," especially on the Fundamentalist and Atheist platforms- WHY?

Rugby Union vs. Rugby League
Just because I'm American doesn't mean I can't like rugby, but I don't know which version of rugby to prefer. I'm leaning towards Rugby Union but I want to hear what everyone here thinks.

Suggestion
In live games, make the page automatically refresh every five seconds if you have already finalized your orders. That way I don't have to sit here pressing F5 waiting for people to finalize.

Anyone with experience on online betting?
See inside.

I'd like to place a bet on a given player scoring the last goal of the World Cup.

Do you think this is possible? What site do you reccomend? Is there a site that has this as a preset option (so I can see the odds)?
Draugnar (0 DX)

Some... Are you talking US or global and is it for online poker or sports/horses?

I tried to put bets on Newcastle, Westbrom & Leeds to get promoted last year (more of an investment than a bet given their form tho) but got confused & scared by the tax laws around it
Draugnar (0 DX)

You should bet here in the US. They can't collect taxes on something that is illegal. <grin>

I know Draug, but I put "See inside" in the first post for a reason. No big deal though.

Thanks Figs, I guess being abroad things can be either much easier or much more complicated than that.

I'd recommend William Hill. They've got a huge range of bets and a really tempting world cup offer for first time members (make a £10 bet and they give you 3 free £10 bets. You really have to try hard to make a loss). Ladbrokes have a similar offer and are well worth a sniff too. Paddypower, 888 and Skybet also have tempting offers. You could do what I did and join them all :p. I'm up £80 this world cup despite the fact that most of my predictions have failed appallingly.

(Note: These sites are all great for the UK market. It's worth checking if they cater for other nationalities, but I'm pretty sure they do)

@Oct: can you explain to me (in brief) how it works tax-wise in the UK then?
I'm still considering it (and the 1st semi should be an easy pick)
Draugnar (0 DX)

I did see inside and I saw nothing... So I started asking questions cause I wasn't sure where you were from Xapi. But I should have remember somewhere in South America. Right?
Xapi (194 D)
28 Jun 10 UTC
Be patient. Yes, I'm somewhere in South America.
Octavious (2701 D)

@figle

To put it briefly, in the UK there is no tax on gambling. It was abolished a few years back because traditional bookies were concerned that they were losing business to foreign competition on the internet and insisted on a level playing field.
Xapi (194 D)
28 Jun 10 UTC
Ok, I checked William Hill, and there isn't an option for the World Cup Final, but there is for the games that are already defined, so I guess I'll wait until (and if) the player I'm betting on gets to the final match.

Any more info anyone cares to give is welcome though.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
28 Jun 10 UTC
Yeh, but you still have to disclose it as an income, don't you?
Octavious (2701 D)
28 Jun 10 UTC
@figle

How much are you planning on gambling??? I don't think for small amounts HMRC will care even if you do have to disclose it. I certainly never have. Mind you, HMRC move in mysterious ways. They keep on insisting I fill in a tax return for a small business in Manchester, despite the fact that I have never had one. It was funny at first, now it's getting tedious...
