Boys with Toys
Whether it's "Rosebud..." or "Toy Story 3" (I have to see it still, but I'm already crying lol) the media seems to love to remind us of that nostalgic-but-sad-for-some fact...We ALL had a favorite toy or two...or many...
And now- they're gone, or stuffed in the attic.

This Time on Philosophy Weekly: Americans, Fundamentalism, and Philosophy
I realize a good deal of Americans are likely moderate on this issue, but nevertheless, this has certainly affected me dearly in my life so far- in other countries, it seems, theological/philosophical ideas are more accepted in the mainstream; you may have your opinion, but you at least take into account all sides seriously. In America it seems to be more polarizing, "we're 100% right, full stop," especially on the Fundamentalist and Atheist platforms- WHY?

Why I hate (live) Gunboats
Inside
rlumley (0 DX)
29 Jun 10 UTC
Let's take a look at gameID=32496, a live gunboat I played last night. It sucked. You want to know why? Let's count the reasons...

A. People never finalized, so it took 2.5 hours. Jesus Christ people. It's not hard.

B. Germany was an idiot. (And he was the guy who never finalized) Seriously, why the hell would you attack the guy (me) who is attacking your biggest rival (Austria) and stopping him from soloing? (See Spring 1904 - Autumn 1906)

C. Austria was an idiot. Germany should have soloed. I have no idea why Germany and England agreed to a draw. When you need four fleets for the solo, and you only have to, and you're not going to be able to build any more, you don't eliminate the guy who has the two fleets you need to set up the stalemate.

D. Russia was an idiot. (Kind of) I wasn't really paying that much attention to the far east, but why were you and Austria at each other's throats so vehemently? The three of us had already voted draw - we needed to force England and Germany to do the same, and you do that by setting up stalemates, not by bickering and taking each other's SC's.

29 Jun 10 UTC
Who is wasting who's time? Me, or you with this post? OK...argument...uh....how about when you shifted your forces like a pansy into Spain and Port instead of retaking Marseille? either way the last moves of the desperate...

I'm sure you are a fine player (actually, i have no idea) but a post like this? Pleease....need a little cheese with that whine? It's the pathetic rant of a poor loser. That's all I'm saying.
rlumley (0 DX)
29 Jun 10 UTC
You're retarded. Spain and Portugal were needed for the stalemate... It's an easier stalemate than Mars/GoB/WM/NA.
krellin (80 DX)
29 Jun 10 UTC
And yet....perhaps they did it just because they knew it pissed you off so much. It's hilarious to watch you throw your little tantrum because people didn't play the game the way you wanted. Too funny! Haaa ha ha ha ha!
krellin (80 DX)
29 Jun 10 UTC
Oh..."needed for the stalemate....Errrr....i didn't SEE you in a stalemate? So I guess you were....how should I phrase this....RETARDED and WRONG.

+1 SynalonEtuul

I was attacking Austria for the same reason that you were attacking Austria. Furthermore, once Austria had committed to a defense against Germany, I had no doubt that I could take Austria, keep building in SEV, AND prevent a German solo. I'm just that good.

I explained above why I didn't. I also gathered that he was a noob and couldnt hold back Germany. I was right. Also fat chance of Germany waiting to get a fleet into MAO with England going after him towards the end.

When it comes to picking powers to fight, (In a gunboat) I'm going to fight the 10 sc power that hasn't pushed draw before I fight the 10 sc power who has. Yes. I stand by that decision.
rlumley (0 DX)
29 Jun 10 UTC
My favorite is how no one has actually rebuked the points I made.
krellin (80 DX)
29 Jun 10 UTC
I already did...I rebuked you for acting like a baby because people didn't play the game the way YOU wanted it to go. There is no "rebuking"...and, by the way that's "reFuTing"...you points, because they are meaningless. It's a fluid game. It's always different. If there were a set way to play things, it would be boring.

But you want to get right down to it? You're problems began long before 1904-1906. Your problems started with an inconsistent, meandering strategy. Maybe you should worry less about other people and worry more about your own strategy...then you wouldn't have to be fighting for scraps. Oh...wait...you WEREN'T fighting for scraps...you DIED. Haaa haa haa.

Keep posting, rlumley...because it's great fun mocking you.

2 : to turn back or keep down : check

And just to clarify - I never said I played it spectacularly. I obviously, in hindsight, should have fought off Germany. It wouldn't have been difficult. I just thought that he wouldn't have attacked the guy fighting his main rival...
krellin (80 DX)
29 Jun 10 UTC
rlumley -- dude, you can't even read the dictionary right. a "rebuke" is something you do to correct a person's behavior. to "refute" an argument is to show the error in it. You made arguments as to why your game went bad.

I'm sorry...you are apparently to stupid to even have this discussion with. Come back to me when you learn how to rub a couple brain cells together.

Yo IMPLY you are a great player when you (after losing) start trying to point out the error in how everybody else plays, you idiot. If, in hidsight, you see that YOU screwed up, wtf are you doing trying to say the people that survived are wrong for. Your still an ass, but maybe at least you are finally getting the point...(and by that, I don't mean the point you get when you bend over in the shower...'cause you already got that one in your game...)

rlumley (0 DX)

" to criticize sharply"

Perhaps it's your ignorance.
krellin (80 DX)
29 Jun 10 UTC
You don't "criticize" and argument, numbnutt, you criticize a person. "rlumley, quit being such a dimwitted asshole" is a rebuke.

Listem, chumly, maybe you should go ask Mommy or Daddy if there is a difference between "rebuke" and "refute", because clearly the dictionary doesn't help you much when you don't understand the word in the definition...i.e. criticize...Or try a thesaurus, where you will find that the overwhelming majority of synonyms imply harsh words spoken towards someone. but....you know what? I tried to educate you, but you are too much of a pig-headed asshole to even take the opportunity to learn from someone. You just go ahead and keep using words incorrectly instead of saying..."Oh...thanks for that minor bit of correction. I'll take note of the that in the future," like a mature person would do. You are a sad, sad little monkey...

@ rlumley Germany here, I attacked you because you put up no defense. I was going to attack England then Russia grew, quickly! It was better to keep England around than have Russia eventually head west. As long as you were going to let me dance in France I was going to. I didn't want you and England to ally so I helped him against Russia. Eventually he saw the stalemate line in the east and decided to work on the one in the west. He did secure Spa/MAO/WMed stalemate line and we had the StP stalemate line and I was taking the center. I drew in the end because it was late for me. That's all. I did NOT want to spend an hour trying to solo. I was happy with the draw. End of story. When you make overtures to a possible ally and he turns them down, be prepared to fight, not go to TYS and ION. Just sayin'.
rlumley (0 DX)
29 Jun 10 UTC
@ Czech: Thanks for actually replying to the topic at hand. That's fair enough. Had I not messed up (I should have moved my army to Gascony in 1902, not Mars) things would have been much different, because three armies most definitely is a defense, it's just I executed it horribly.

Were you not at all concerned about Austria soloing though?
rlumley (0 DX)
29 Jun 10 UTC
And it wouldn't have been so late if you had actually finalized your orders. ;-)

You made me want to attack you based on nothing but that, lol.
krellin (80 DX)
29 Jun 10 UTC
I thought you attacked people because they didn't hit "Draw"....now you attack people because they won't hit "Ready" soon enough for you. So....at any point in time does actual *strategy* play into your decisions? you just continue to put yourself out there as a moron. It's quite amusing...

Now for your comments
A. People never finalized, so it took 2.5 hours. Jesus Christ people. It's not hard.

We did finalize sometimes, never is incorrect. The reason I chose NOT to finalize was so I could ponder my moves and go to the bathroom. I was also watching TV at the time. Sometimes when I play gunboat I also play non-gunboat games so finalizing isn't always an option. I do, however, finalize IF IT IS IN THE TITLE of the game.

B. Germany was an idiot. (And he was the guy who never finalized) Seriously, why the hell would you attack the guy (me) who is attacking your biggest rival (Austria) and stopping him from soloing? (See Spring 1904 - Autumn 1906)

See earlier comment in the thread. You didn't put up a defense.

C. Austria was an idiot. Germany should have soloed. I have no idea why Germany and England agreed to a draw. When you need four fleets for the solo, and you only have to, and you're not going to be able to build any more, you don't eliminate the guy who has the two fleets you need to set up the stalemate.

England and I set up a stalemate fine. Seems like krellin said it best "because people didn't play the game the way YOU wanted it to go."

Russia played fine. He was too trusting. I took a chance that he would move Mos-Sev and leave War open for me. Since I didn't have to worry about you attacking me, it was a no brainer. The fact that Russia held in there says a lot about his understanding of the game and your lack of understand.
The Czech (40398 D(S))
29 Jun 10 UTC
@ rlumley. When England went for NAO and built in Lvp. I knew we could secure the stalemate lines. I wasn't worried about a Austrian solo. Once England was on board it was at the least a stalemate. The only reason I didn't stab him a year earlier was that I was tired and wanted to go to bed. Had Austria not taken you out of Tun, the game would have progressed differently. I was just waiting to split the pot with one less power.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))
29 Jun 10 UTC
I didn't look at the game too much, but I did see Russia take Bulgaria with a sweet set of moves, so he can't be that much of an idiot.
rlumley (0 DX)
29 Jun 10 UTC
C. England and you didn't need my help setting up a stalemate, Austria did. I gave him that help, and he took it, and he spit on it. Which leads us to D...

D. It doesn't say anything. Because both he and Austria SHOULD have gotten defeated, because YOU should have soloed, because Austria refused to set up the stalemate because he didn't like me.

You already said that the only reason you didn't solo was "it was late". Are you really then going to make the case that Austria and Russia deserved the draw? The two are logically incompatible.
rlumley (0 DX)
29 Jun 10 UTC
@ Czech

That build came long after the period I was talking about. I understand why you attacked me after 1906, but from 1904-1906 made no sense to me. I would have beaten down your only rival for power.
