Has anyone el been following this? It got even worse over the weekend, with 117 killed and 1,500 would, mostly bullet wounds. Russia still has not agreed to give substantial military aid to quell the rioting.

This Time on Philosophy Weekly: Russell vs. Nietzsche and UK/USA vs. Continental Europe
So my computer's fixed, happy to be back on the forum, and to celebrate- another Philosophy Weekly, and one concerning my favorite philosopher, Nietzsche, and another I respect, Russell http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJ-526v0T4Q Harsh words there from Russell on Nietzsche- with whom do you side, and, taking this on the grander scheme, where do you side in the UK/USA-Continental Europe Philosophical Divide?

A request for the removal of a game and the refunding of the points involved
This conserns when the site went down earlier today, we had a full live game set up just before the problem occured so we were all locked into the game, I was waiting for the site to go back up for about two hours and when the site didn't go back up, I left. Now one player must of happened to get on right after you fixed the problem, so he easily won while the other players were absent, including me.

Gunboat sucks
I mean, isn't the name of the game "Diplomacy"?
I completely agree. Gunboat sucks, but then again, so do a lot of things. I keep my balance between the real thing and gunboats.

No, its called Gunboat - if it was called Diplomacy there'd be no end of confusion :)
Gunboat is fun, granted that you need competent players. I'm playing Turkey in Monday Night Live WTA Gunboat, and I won't say anything about the game beyond the fact that Russia, despite being my enemy at a few points in the game, seems (we'll see after this turn) to be rather intelligent and aware of the situation. When you have players like that, who know what's going on and how to accomplish their goals, Gunboat can be VERY fun.

...And yet for every Russia in that game, you'll have at least one Austria that attacks you in the middle of a Lepanto, claiming to be allied with Russia and Turkey. It happens.

@PE - You shouldn't take about ongoing games, particularly if its anon (which this one seems to be)

I actually prefer gunboat games. I sometimes win them. I'm a good strategist, but I'm not the worlds greatest negotiator.

my question is why are they called gunboat games?
acmac10 (120 D(B))

In international politics, gunboat diplomacy refers to the pursuit of foreign policy objectives with the aid of conspicuous displays of military power — implying or constituting a direct threat of warfare, should terms not be agreeable to the superior force.

@iMurk - Because you let your units do the talking.
The British Empire was particularly known for it - chuck a couple of battleships to a port (Hong Kong) and the neighbors (China) will do as you ask.
Eden,
You are displaying your affinity for a player. Had you said 'I am playing Turkey and my Russia is a complete dick', which is the opposite of what you did, obviously that would have an affect on how Russia would treat you in game, no?
Fair enough, Dingleberry.
S.E. Peterson (100 D)

I was the Russian in that game. Didn't see Eden's comments until well after it was over. In retrospect, I should've stabbed him :~P

Drop-down menu error
i and several other players in game http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=28790 have noticed errors saving some moves on the drop down menu. i've noticed it particularly in situations where options have to be selected which handle convoying, as in armies moving to territories with "by land" or "by convoy" options and the actual ordering of convoys by navies. at least one other player in this game has noticed it as well. please resolve this, if possible.

A Middle East Map Variant?
Just noticing... we have the Good Ol' Regular Version of Diplomacy, a Modern, 17-Powers Variant, and a Mediterranean Variant...

Given all the conflict there, the political intrigue, and enough states and - how about a Middle East Variant? 7 Powers can be Egypt, Israel, Palestine (West Bank or so), Saudi Arabia, Iran, and two Iraqs, one "US-backed" and one not...?
