Ethnic Violence in Southern Kyrgystan
Has anyone el been following this? It got even worse over the weekend, with 117 killed and 1,500 would, mostly bullet wounds. Russia still has not agreed to give substantial military aid to quell the rioting.

A request for the removal of a game and the refunding of the points involved
This conserns when the site went down earlier today, we had a full live game set up just before the problem occured so we were all locked into the game, I was waiting for the site to go back up for about two hours and when the site didn't go back up, I left. Now one player must of happened to get on right after you fixed the problem, so he easily won while the other players were absent, including me.

Et tu Colorado?
The Big 12 is no more; or at least no longer 12. Any thoughts from the peanut gallery?
yayager (384 D)
10 Jun 10 UTC
It's a pipe dream, but I'd like to see the old Southwest Conference get back together plus Oklahoma & OK State. The next best thing from my point of view is to have the SEC at least pick up Texas and Oklahoma. Now that'd make Saturdays in autumn all the more intriguing.
Panthers (470 D)

The Pac-10 is going to be crazy loaded. USC (even if they are suspended from bowls for two years), Texas, and Oklahoma. Not to metion Oregon State, Oregon, and Cal who have been great the last decade.

I am excited because I live in Denver and in a couple years I will get to see the Pac-10 teams come to town.

Or should I say the soon to be Pac-16
yayager (384 D)
10 Jun 10 UTC
Anyone else? Imho, the SEC & Big 10 would suit most Big 12 teams better than the current Pac 10. Culturally they're much more similar than the left coast, though I suppose the difference in culture makes for some interesting rivalries. USC & Texas/Oklahoma on a regular basis would be pretty epic. Washington State v Texas Tech not so much.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

No worse than Baylor v Iowa State.

As a Pac-10 fan I've long felt that the Pac-10 should not expand. There just aren't any other schools west of the Rockies that have good enough academics and athletics and fanbase. So when rumors of adding six from the Big 12 started a month ago, I thought there was an expansion that would actually make sense.

Effectively it'll be two conferences united. Presumably each year we'd play the other 7 teams in our division plus 2 games (one home and one away) against the other division.

Basically it is like giving Arizona and ASU to those six Big 12 teams and having some extra out of conference games against each other and working together for TV deals and whatnot.

What I'm very worried about is that now that we've got Colorado, if Texas, Oklahoma, and the others don't come, we'll likely settle for just adding Utah and being at 12 teams with a horrible north/south division instead of a sensible east/west division.

By the way, if anyone is interested in talking college football, come over to the cfn.scout.com forum. (http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=451) Note that there are very strict forum rules, unlike here. (strict forum rules there and little to no rules here both make sense for different reasons, I'm not complaining about the lack of rules here.)

"There just aren't any other schools west of the Rockies that have good enough academics and athletics and fanbase"

That's never been a requirement for being in the PAC-10. FYI.

What needs to happen is the SEC needs to get Texas and then they will have every decent football program in the country. (Good riddance Vandy, by the way) The SEC championship will continue to be the national championship, and everyone will know it.

Touchdown Jesus---bleh.

I don't think any Big 12 South teams will end up in the Pac 10. . The only good thing to come out of that combination would be a Texas A&M - Cal culture clash. One conference shouldn't have two OSUs.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

From everything I've heard and read I just don't see Texas going to the Big Ten or SEC. So either they keep the Big 12 alive, maybe invite TCU and BYU or Utah, or they come to the Pac-10.

I think we should go to the Pac-10. Texas I mean. I like those schools better anyway.

What makes me laugh is how the Aggies are so reluctant to follow all the other Texas/OK schools to the Pac-10 (11? 15? 16?), presumably because they don't like the idea of following UT's lead.

I jest, but seriously... just get in line already.

lol that would be good too
I think all this conference reshuffling is ridiculous. I'm a Big Ten fan (despite the fact that I'm going to a Pac 10 school) and I think Bo and Woody are spinning in their graves at what's going on. There's been talk of Nebraska and Rutgers joining the Big Ten. Neither of those schools remotely fit the Big Ten's image. The only team I'd ever have join the Big Ten would be Notre Dame, and I don't think they ever would. This whole thing about conferences having 16 teams is a terrible idea. It will either make conferences too large to be properly considered a conference, all but eliminate the non-conference season, or force an elongation of the season as a whole, and none of those ideas seem any good to me.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

"There's been talk of Nebraska and Rutgers joining the Big Ten."

Um, Nebraska has already joined the Big Ten.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=5276551

"The Big Ten's board of presidents and chancellors unanimously welcomed Nebraska to the club on Friday, just a few hours after the school formally disclosed its interest. The move takes effect July 1, 2011."

Are you aware that Nebraska is in the AAU? And that they are an all time top 10 team? They are as far north as Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. So in what way do they not remotely fit the Big Ten's image?

Texas and "friends' are merging with the Pac10. The fact that A&M thinks it can exist without Big Brother Texas is funny. They have no identity other than as the "anti-UT". I'm ready for Baylor to be left behind. Sorry, they no longer can compete at the big boy level.

@ rlumley - The SEC has enjoyed a nice string of seasons, but to say they have every decent team in the country is just a wee bit of a stretch there. I believe the Big 10 (now 12) would currently hold 4 of top 7 all-time winningest teams. It's cyclical; keep that in mind:). I also cannot recall the last time USC has struggled w/ any SEC team - thought that may change w/ the penalties.
yayager (384 D)

So, can you have a Big 10 with 12 teams and a Big 12 with 10 teams?

It seems a bit screwy to swap names, so my money is that the Big 12-2 gets TCU and someone else (Houston, SMU, BYU) to stay 12 and keep a championship game.

Shameless bump of a thread that was five days gone...

But since I didn't see Lan's reply:

@ Lan:

It's not at all a stretch. The SEC's record against non conference teams is marvelous, and when you look at the top SEC teams vs top teams in other conferences, the SEC almost always wins.

The last three "National Championships" have been jokes, because the SEC team absolutely demolished every. single. time.

And winningest teams isn't a fair comparison: Great SEC teams lose all the time because they're playing other great SEC teams.

Fact is, if any of the supposedly great teams (USC included) played SEC conference games, they'd get destroyed.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
15 Jun 10 UTC
Now that the Big 12 is 10, I agree with yayager, we should pick up some extras.

I'm all for getting Houston... don't know about BYU though. Houston deserves to be in the conference though they're not half bad.

And TCU, definitely.

But now with this talk of Tech leaving even though everyone else agreed to stay, we may have to get still a third team to fill in for Tech.

Fuck Tech.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

From what I've heard there is some bad blood between Texas and Houston and that Texas will never play Houston again. If accurate, then Houston won't be invited.

Drop-down menu error
i and several other players in game http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=28790 have noticed errors saving some moves on the drop down menu. i've noticed it particularly in situations where options have to be selected which handle convoying, as in armies moving to territories with "by land" or "by convoy" options and the actual ordering of convoys by navies. at least one other player in this game has noticed it as well. please resolve this, if possible.

A Middle East Map Variant?
Just noticing... we have the Good Ol' Regular Version of Diplomacy, a Modern, 17-Powers Variant, and a Mediterranean Variant...

Given all the conflict there, the political intrigue, and enough states and - how about a Middle East Variant? 7 Powers can be Egypt, Israel, Palestine (West Bank or so), Saudi Arabia, Iran, and two Iraqs, one "US-backed" and one not...?
