Ethnic Violence in Southern Kyrgystan
Has anyone el been following this? It got even worse over the weekend, with 117 killed and 1,500 would, mostly bullet wounds. Russia still has not agreed to give substantial military aid to quell the rioting.

Oh yeah. Almost forgot.
"Kyrgstan is not - there are many asian countries where governments have been ousted and protesters have been shot - in former soviet and asian teritories ".

Ummmm have you read the news in the last week. That's not what Kyrgyzstan is about now.

I have a friend from Kyrgstan. He's a good guy... I wonder if he's alright.

really dbj? did the president of Kyrgyzstan not fle to belarus in march? Do they not now have a provisional government, and are (Uzbek) supporters of the former president now being shot in the south of the country?

Did nepal have similar riots against the monarchy? maybe with less death, did Thailand have similar riots ("Eighty-eight people were killed and more than 1,000 injured during the long occupation of parts of the city by anti-government demonstrators")

And no it is not rascist to distinguish between two things which are different.

Israel runs a prison state (militrary commanders running palestine)

Darfur is more of a war from what i can see, rebels fighting government troops.

In the Case of Israel a stronger UN mandate would be needed to ensure previous UN limits on the border of Israel were enforced.

In the case of Darfur a peace deal is possible between the various factions, the peacekeepers could avoid shooting people while ensuring there is space for a dialogue.

So yes, I think Israel should be treated differently from the Government of Sudan, but Israel has acted differently from the Government of Sudan.
There were Kyrgyz demonstrators who were killed after the election in March. The people being killed now are not being killed because they are demonstrating - they are being killed because they are Uzbek. Period.

There is very little similarity between Kyrgyzstan and Nepal, but I fail to see the relevance regardless. Who cares if there is a similar conflict in Nepal? What has that got to do with justice or death or humanitarian concern for people being killed because of their ethnicity?

Why the focus for you on one conflict? Its not about the victims, you've made that clear. But because of who the oppressors are. Now why is that? Even granting you your suppositions in your post, why is the running of a prison so much more your focus than the government sanctioned killing of Darfurians, or the government sanctioned killing of Hutus and/or Tutsi's farther south. Why are the imprisoned Palestinians so much higher on your radar than the dead Darfurians or Tutsis or Hutus? Why do you pretend its because of humanitarian concern, for the plight of the oppressed? Because its not for you.

There are rumours that the riots were instigated by outside forces. People claimed to see people in ski masks claiming to be Uzbeks and start shooting Kyrgyzs; and then vice versa.

Ok... I've been doing a little bit of reaserch into this and have come up with one question I've not found a good answer to. The Kyrgyz are described as a predominantly muslim Turkic ethnic group. The Uzbeks, on the other hand, are described as a largely muslim Turkic people. What the bloody hell are they fighting about?!?

Source, smallpork?

@Octavious: I think it is tribal, not unlike Hutus & Tutsis in Rwanda, rather than religious (Darfur) or political (Nepal, Thailand).
largeham (149 D)

The UN claimed the violence was orchestrated, but all I could find was a wikipedia page and yahoo article: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100615/ap_on_re_as/as_kyrgyzstan
There are probably other sources, but I should be getting to sleep, so yeah.
BTW, the Darfur conflict is partly racial, as many of the Janjaweed militia and government backed forces are of Arab descent, and believe themselves superior to black Africans, whom are being killed. No one gives a shit about Africa.

Along the same lines as this threads general thinking...

Why has the Obama administration shown Palestinians in Gaza support but refused to so much as say a thing when Iran's streets were packed with protesters as a result of what most everyone in the world considered a fraudulent "election" in an essentially dictatorial country?

So a blockade of an area governed by terrorists is bad but repressive regimes calling for other nations to be wiped off the face of the Earth are cool? While the blockade isn't acceptable in my mind, it's a drop in the bucket compared to the danger posed by the Iranian regime - to it's citizens and (in the longer term) to the rest of the world.

(P.S.:under Hillary Clinton, the State Department has pointed out how the Iranian government is continuously moving toward being more of a military dictatorship)

@Largeham: "the Darfur conflict is partly racial", I know. My post is somewhat of a simplification. For example, the Thai protests have a hidden racial element in that many of the "urban elite" associated with the Government point of view are of Chinese descent whereas those in the countryside are generally not (and then throw in the Muslim separatists in the south ....).

This Time on Philosophy Weekly: Russell vs. Nietzsche and UK/USA vs. Continental Europe
So my computer's fixed, happy to be back on the forum, and to celebrate- another Philosophy Weekly, and one concerning my favorite philosopher, Nietzsche, and another I respect, Russell http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJ-526v0T4Q Harsh words there from Russell on Nietzsche- with whom do you side, and, taking this on the grander scheme, where do you side in the UK/USA-Continental Europe Philosophical Divide?

A request for the removal of a game and the refunding of the points involved
This conserns when the site went down earlier today, we had a full live game set up just before the problem occured so we were all locked into the game, I was waiting for the site to go back up for about two hours and when the site didn't go back up, I left. Now one player must of happened to get on right after you fixed the problem, so he easily won while the other players were absent, including me.

Drop-down menu error
i and several other players in game http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=28790 have noticed errors saving some moves on the drop down menu. i've noticed it particularly in situations where options have to be selected which handle convoying, as in armies moving to territories with "by land" or "by convoy" options and the actual ordering of convoys by navies. at least one other player in this game has noticed it as well. please resolve this, if possible.

A Middle East Map Variant?
Just noticing... we have the Good Ol' Regular Version of Diplomacy, a Modern, 17-Powers Variant, and a Mediterranean Variant...

Given all the conflict there, the political intrigue, and enough states and - how about a Middle East Variant? 7 Powers can be Egypt, Israel, Palestine (West Bank or so), Saudi Arabia, Iran, and two Iraqs, one "US-backed" and one not...?
