How about a 'historical' set alliance game
I would like to try a set alliance game where the players agree to work in certain alliances as in WW1 (France, England, Russia vs. Turkey, Germany, Austria Hungary). Italy begins as Neutral and must announce a side by 1902.

I thought a paused game would still process as long as all orders were finalized...
If so, why didn't gameID=25174 run?

Visual Psychology
A Question: What role do you all think the visuals of the map play in Diplomatic decision making?

Many of us consider changing alliances when a power - especially one across the board we haven't had too much interaction with - seems to be getting too big. We're France: maybe Russia just took Austria and Turkey. Suddenly that fight with Germany seems ill-suited to driving back the Russian advance, etc.

Obviously these calculations are and should be done by SC counts - hard numbers which are readily available to us. But some of it isn't: to some extent, decisions about who is becoming dangerous are made when we see the map and think "gee, a lot of this map is looking blue all of a sudden".

So this is my question: To what extent do you think this influence exists? Is it big enough that a 7-SC Russia looks more dangerous than a 9-SC Italy, just because the Russian home SCs and a lot of their potential growth areas (i.e., scandinavia) happen to be big on the map: making their coloring-in with purple seem like a bigger deal than Greece being colored green?

yep, it is noticable, but if you're looking at stalemate lines and counting not the number of centres a player currently has, but instead how many they need and where the easiest ones are for them to grab, then colours probably have less impact.

I would think newer players would be subject to that kind of miscalculation.

It could have an effect on people if they don't look at the SC counts. Because honestly, England just takes small coastal areas and still look small compared to Turkey or Russia just because the SCs they can get are so much larger.

I think it does. Another issue is the lengths of the borders between territories. Some borders are less eyecatching to the new player. Although it's clear upon inspection (and to non-new players) that Rumania borders Serbia, the border between them is so small that a threat from one is not always obvious, allowing some plans to be overlooked. Another example is the Norway-St Petersburg border, which catches many new players by surprise.

This is why I use jDip at times to view the map in a rectilinear projection.

Just in case, I try not to spook allies by grabbing unoccupied territries unneccesarily. I think it might have a slight subconscious effect.

Neither necessarily means a thing so much as the position for future gains. An 8 SC Russia who is being pressed and hunkering down in defense is less threatenign than a 7 SC England with fleets surrounding France. But I could see how newbies would freak out with a 7 SC Russia versus a 9 SC France.

So I Saw Jesus, Moses, and Muhammad Walking To The Deli Earlier- Really! (Really?)
My friends and theologians here often mention the above figures. They're so important to religion. Chrstians believe Jesus is the messiah... but if he DID return- would you recognize him? How to distinguish him from that loony in Central Park in the robe and long hair... with the skepticism of our society... how would you KNOW it was "Him?" I presume magicians and tricksters can find ways of "walking on water," so miracles aside- HOW?
