In The Spirit Of Site-Wide Peace And Love- CELEBRITY DEATHMATCH!
A crude but fun little show here in the States from the late 90s into the new millenium, claymation versions of celebrities present (Tommy Lee vs. Pamela Anderson, Bill Clinto vs. Saddam Hussein) and past (Joe Peshi vs. Napoleon in a "Short Man" fight, and, my personal favorite, "A Hard Day's Fight" featuring The Beatles in a battle royale!) would duke it out.

So pick your celebrity/historical deam matchup, and who'd win, why... let's have fun!

Pryor vs. Carlin in... The Context of a Word?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZCS5I80X-8&NR=1
You'd think having Richard Pryor and George Carlin in the same clip on a topic would be hilarious... instead, it raises an interesting question: are some words just not to be used in comedy and just too uncomfortable (Pryor) or is it "context!" that matters (George Carlin of Seven Dirty Words fame... those words are... nah, find the clip yourself!) ;) Interesting one great comedian + one great comedian= linguistic/social debate...

Firefly: What Should I Expect?
So I've heard a ton of good stuff about the show (even though only 1 season ever aired). I started watching it on Netflix tonight, and so far it seems pretty cool. Any fans on here?

I loved firefly. I think it does a lot of things pretty well and a few things not so well. Overall a very fun show to watch.

some fantastic stuff. have watched it on DVD multiple times.

It sounds counter-intuitive, but I think you should watch Serenity, the Firefly movie, before watching the series. It'll give you an idea of how good the show could have been with better production values. Also, watch the outtakes in the dvd extras. Nathan Fillion is hilarious.

Serenity is awesome, Firefly is good, it didn't have too many filler episodes like other shows do. Sucks they canceled it after just the first season. Why do they cancel all the good shows, but stupid ass shows like Survivor are still on the air... /sigh

I watched Serenity first and then bought the Firefly DVDs and watched them. Great movie and great series. Shame it wasn't given the necessary backing to become the hit it should have been.

Really good script for a scifi, not wooden like star trek/stargate etc. Good interplay between the characters, doesnt take itself too seriously. fav episodes- the one where the capt gets "married". the show might have ben cancelled but it was a pretty good launch vehicle for some of the actors- Nathan filler in Castle (should i watch that? is ti any good?) the High class hooker moved on the be the V hotqueenbitchmonster and the Baldwin guy moved to chuck(to play a somewhat similar charachter)
Dammit Fox, you coulda burned the land, or boiled the sea, but why'd you have to take the sky from me?

I used to think Firefly was the greatest SciFi series, and then I found Battlestar Galactica. Firefly is still funnier though. I need to watch it again.
My dad owns the complete set. I've seen a few episodes, it's pretty sweet.
AngrySeas (346 D)

Make sure you watch it in order of film rather than order of release. Amazing show you only get once a decade that has very little to do with the movie. It's a live-action Cowboy Bebop.

@ abgemacht... what did you think it did not do so well? Just curious.
AngrySeas (346 D)
14 Apr 10 UTC
@ sean... Castle is okay. There's a great Firefly throwback scene you'll like. Nathan Filler's daughter is going to a Halloween party and Nathan shows up in his Firefly/Mal costume. Her response: "God Dad, you're so 5 years ago."

I loved the script, set, acting but i felt the series ark story about the girl/mental powers etc was......well it was ok and all but i just prefered when they had fun, made jokes, got into bar room brawls, sang songs, got drunk, got tortured, shot at, gambled, dueled and exchanged wisecracks ...you know the lighter stuff in life.
I've been a scifi fan since before DrWho first aired in '63. My all time fav list of scifi TV shows goes:-
Firefly, Babylon 5, ST:TOS, Battlestar Gallactica (2008), DrWho (Pertwee, Tennant, Tom Baker, Davidson), ST:TNG, ST:Voyager, Thunderbirds (TV), ...

@Sean - Nathan Fillion was several episodes of "Buffy" too - before Firefly. Buffy was also produced by Joss Wheden. What's "Castle"? We don't get it in the UK.

Castsle is a new ish Nathan fillion cop_ show, i havent seen it but will dl a torrent when i run out of things to watch or in a tv dry spell. what do you think of the new doctor? I thought 2 things, 1. i like him and 2. wow there IS a red headed white woman i would sleep with! never thought i would be saying that!
AngrySeas (346 D)
14 Apr 10 UTC
Nathan Fillion is also in "Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog"... written, produced, and directed by Joss Wheden. Enjoyable in a charming emo sort of teenage way. You can find it on youtube.

Yeah, the humorous moments of firefly were best. They needed more time to expand the characters and the arc.
Aurens (252 D)

In Firefly, outer space scenes are all silent, even when something explodes. Alas, they put the noise back into outer space for the movie.
Draugnar (0 DX)

The whole silence in space thing is part of what I liked about B5 as well.

Here is a youtube playlist that has all six parts of Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog:
http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=D7CC60A21F9DD43C
@Aurens - I loved them both, but I didn't notice that.
@sean - New Dr Who - I don't like him. He laughed while looking up his new companions nighty! Hmmm. Jon Pertwee would never have done that. Nor I think would any of the others. They had class, this guy doesn't. I wouldn't want to drink a beer with him and I certainly wouldn't like to work with him.

I do like his new companion though. Not as alluring as Sarah Jane Smith was when she first "companioned" The Doctor (I was a shiny new teenager back then and she was hot Hot HOT <blush>). Now she's older, but so am I and, guess what, tastes change as a man ages <blush>. (Gulp! I hope my wife doesn't see this).

I am a cult fanatic of everything Joss Whedon, and Firefly is the show that started me on that trend. The man is an artistic genius, and Firefly and Serenity are the best of the best.

Oh, and Castle is pretty good, and Dr. Horrible is hilarious. Look for the sequel to hit the big screen in the next year or so (!)

And don't hate on Survivor so much. It's an alright show, and as a diplomacy player, you should appreciate it's cutthroat nature...

You can expect to be disappointed that it was canceled like Journeyman and Jericho.
Draugnar (0 DX)

I'm particularly fond of his shows with Eliza Dushku. Dollhouse was incredible and I was so sad to see him have to wrap it up in a hlaf season. That show's story line could have gone on for years.

Dollhouse + Terminator: TSCC made for awesome Fridays.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
14 Apr 10 UTC
I liked Dollhouse, but not nearly as much as Firefly. I thought the fact that the dolls could do so much often led to silly "obstacles" that prevented the dolls from just kicking everyones asses.
AngrySeas (346 D)
14 Apr 10 UTC
Firefly was the tops for Joss... but what did you all think about Serenity? We have one fan, it seems, but I guess I would have to say that I didn't like it. It felt as if Joss had given all of us die-hard fans the finger.
Draugnar (0 DX)
14 Apr 10 UTC
Well, I loved Serenity, but it was my introduction to Firefly as I didn't catch it the first go round. In particular, Summer Glau's River was one kick ass character in the movie. Then when I got to experience the origins of the character, I was highly impressed with the original, so I love both.
rlumley (0 DX)
14 Apr 10 UTC
When people say Firefly, they mean Firefly and Serenity both.

The true barometer of Firefly's awesomeness is this: How many shows that have been canceled after 12 episodes (or was it 11? I'm not sure) are made into major motion pictures? Not many...
orathaic (1009 D(B))
14 Apr 10 UTC
"Firefly, Babylon 5, ST:TOS, Battlestar Gallactica (2008) ..." How can you leave out Farscape???

And Space: Above & Beyond for that matter...
Farscape is up there with Firefly and Babylon 5 in my mind (and maybe Battlestar Galactica)
ajohnson (1375 D(B))
14 Apr 10 UTC
@sean - Another actor who launched after the show is Christina Hendricks. She played Saffron (Mal's "wife"). She now has an ample (wink-wink, nudge-nudge) role as Joan Holloway on Mad Men, another great show.
Draugnar (0 DX)
14 Apr 10 UTC
Farscape = #1 Sci Fi show to date
Babylon 5 = #2
FireFly = #3
BG (new) and Caprica #4
Space: A&B #5
...and does anyone remember Earth 2?
@Orthaic - because Farscape *could* have been very good and the first series showed promise, but then... And did you really wonder why I didn't include such a pile of drivel as "Space: Above & Beyond" in my all time greats lists? Because it was an utter pile of drivel, that's why!

Andromeda, on the other hand, was good. Very good indeed, but, sadly, only to start with. [Exception: Lexa Doig - Wow!).
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
15 Apr 10 UTC
@Draugnar

I'm surprised LEXX isn't #1 on your list.
Draugnar (0 DX)
15 Apr 10 UTC
Actually, LEXX probably falls around #3, pushing the rest down 1. Farscape was/is/and proabbaly will be the most creative SciFi show and B5 (if you exclude the first season) is right behind it. LEXX is fun and Xev/Zev is great in all incarnations, but it hardly compares writing wise with Farscape or B5. although the planets Fire and Water during the last season made for some interesting writing.
Draugnar (0 DX)
15 Apr 10 UTC
Andromeda was Hercules in space. Come on, if Lexa Doig and later Brandy Ledrfoe weren't on the show, there'd be no reason to watch it.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
15 Apr 10 UTC
Andromeda had about 12 minute of good at the start, before turning into the biggst piece of crap since hercules, oh wait.

But andromeda goes on for five painful seasons...

B5 does start slowly and the budget for special effect may need some forgiving, but the build up from season 1 leaves us with the rest, i can leave out season 5, (and Crusade) but season 1 is all part of it for me.
LEXX is, eh, special...

Draugnar (0 DX)
15 Apr 10 UTC
My biggest problem with season 1 of B5 was the acting. While he isn't the greatest actor in the world, Bruce Boxleitner was a tremendous improvement over Michael O'Hare. O'Hare always felt like he was trying to project with an announcers voice as if he was in a radio play or acting on stage.
AngrySeas (346 D)
15 Apr 10 UTC
I definitely don't mean Serenity when I talk about Firefly.
