WARNING: DON'T POST ACCUSATIONS ON THE FORUM.
Just a friendly word to all: don't accuse other players of multiaccounting, metagaming, verbal abuse, etc publicly. I hate to post this up but I feel like I have to because of recent accusations flying around.

I had just written a long spiel to a (possible future ally) when this error popped up. Clearing the cache etc. didn't let me back into the site, neither did browsing away and back again. I had to close Firefox (3.5.5) and reopen it to get back on.

German Statistics
below i have tabulated a variety of statistics in the fourth installment of individual country statistics. for the following stats, i took a sample of 100 games of the specified type (eliminations, solos and draws) to arrive at the results. I will continue doing things in this fashion until i can actually get something together that can calculate all games.

Maybe some of our resident Diplomacy experts can explain...
Why are the army pieces tanks and not soldiers? I always think of tanks as a WWII thing rather than a WWI thing. Any ideas as to why tanks were chosen over soldiers?

French Statistics
below i have tabulated a variety of statistics in the first installment of individual country statistics. for the following stats, i took a sample of 100 games of the specified type (eliminations, solos and draws) to arrive at the results.

did not use the following game types:

games that ended before 1904
7-way draws
games with clear indications of multi-accounting
games in which 3 or more players resigned:

When France draws, who else draws?

England: 65%
Turkey 64%
Italy 46%
Russia: 43%
Germany: 42%
Austria: 29%

When France is eliminated, who solos?

Turkey: 27%
England: 24%
Austria: 14%
Russia: 14%
Germany: 12%
Italy: 9%

When France solos, who's eliminated?

England: 73%
Germany: 66%
Austria: 64%
Italy: 39%
Russia: 36%
Turkey: 24%

Best Ally: Turkey, England
Greatest Adversary: England
Average Year of Victory: 1910

nothing much really jumped out at me that i hadnt already seen when looking at england. once again, germany doesnt seem to be the biggest threat to the western circle and the primary battle appears to usually be between france and england. germany is typically the temporary hinge that swings the tide in one direction since when coupled with the low german win percentage seen in my first statistical post leaves germany in a losing situation if the german doesnt have a backup plan.

it was interesting to see that england was the most formidable player for and against france and also to see yet again that turkish gains are only bolstered by a longer conflict in the west. russia took the biggest hit in win percentages when france is eliminated dropping to only 14% while the other countries climbed.

if i were to have viewed each draw and organized them into piles based on who drew with france, the leader was a 3-way with E/T. also, like england, if france was eliminated, it was far more common to see the game end in a draw instead of a solo victory.

FAQ:

"This is great stuff Tru Ninja. Are you going to do this for the other countries too?"
Yes. This will be compiled in alphabetic order, so Germany is next on my list (which ive already started). after ive done all 7 countries, i will continue to look up a variety of things that strike my fancy, chief among them is whether the amount of in-game messaging a player has affects his/her overall win/draw percentage.

Others have asked for the webDip data to get stats from, and it's better for the server that way, so here is the full database: http://webdiplomacy.net/webDiplomacy.net-SQLdata.zip
It only has finished games, and non-public data is stripped out, but it'd make for much easier analysis

ill take a look and e-mail everything in a better format with more concise info at the finale TGM. after i have all the numbers together ill include a more formal analysis (albeit nonprofessional).

btw kestas, i dont have a program capable of reading your sql data file. is there something online i can download free to read it?

Is there any way to show who solos when x is eliminated relative to how often they normally solo.
So more like: When France is eliminated:
Turkey is 14% more likely to solo.
Italy is 8% likely to solo etc

Because Turkey solos much more than Italy anyway, the current system doesn't really allow you to easily see who benefits more from France being eliminated.

i have previously posted the stats on normal win pct's on a previous post. just check my forum postings from my profile.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))

heres the data you were looking for dave:

% of solo wins out of all total games / out of all solo wins
Russia: 13.9% / 20.3%
Turkey: 12.4% / 18.1%
France: 10.7% / 15.6%
Germany/England: 9.8% / 14.3 %
Austria: 6.8% / 9.8%
Italy: 5.0% / 7.3%

the thing youll have to realize is that when you look at stats on when one country is eliminated, everyone elses stats will by nature go up so any increase will have to take that into account. (its like looking at stats for 6 player games instead of 7 since solo wins can have only 6 different outcomes)

% of solo wins out of all total games / out of all solo wins
Russia: 13.9% / 20.3%
Turkey: 12.4% / 18.1%
France: 10.7% / 15.6%
Germany/England: 9.8% / 14.3 %
Austria: 6.8% / 9.8%
Italy: 5.0% / 7.3%

Thanks but I was more looking for something like:

When France is eliminated by how much do the other country's chances of soloing increase.
So they will all generally increase, but it would allow us to see who profits the most from someone being eliminated.

It would look something like this:

When France is eliminated, who solos?

Turkey: 27% (18% increase) (on normal probability of soloing)
England 24: (25 % increase)
etc.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
09 Nov 09 UTC
as i stated, you can gain that by looking at the two sets of statistics. what we saw from france's elimination is that the major changes to country soloing came with england soloing +10%+/-, turkey +9% +/- and russia soloing -6% +/-. out of the western circle, germany struggled at a -2% gain +/- so clearly england benefits far more than germany

ok, sorry, i didn't realise you wanted me to work them out from the other statistics.
thanks, it was just a suggestion of how you could make it clearer.

after its all said and done, im going to submit a final of what i saw to TGM and he offered to post it on his site. Until that time, id like to minimize work so that i dont do everything twice or more. i dont mind answering questions though.

btw, to kestas: i still havent been able to actually view the database. its too large to open in notepad and i certainly dont have the time (or ability) to create a java program that will read it. what do you (or anyone else) suggest?
orathaic (1009 D(B))

Hmm, not sure. If you're on windows you could install XAMMP and import the data into MySQL via phpMyAdmin. Really the SQL file requires a MySQL installation, though with a bit of effort you could import it into a different one like orathaic suggested

The dataset contains every game, user, moves and territory statuses for each turn in each game, territories, borders, etc, it's a large file but it has everything. If you're using say a Java app to download and scrape webpages here it'd be as simple as "SELECT COUNT(id) FROM wD_Members WHERE status='Won' GROUP BY country", so it might be a hassle to set it up but once you've done that generating stats should be much easier

toad is an oracle viewer.

I'd download/install mysql, then use dbvizualizer to analyze the data.

I am writing a program to use queries and such to get the information then tabulate it, so maybe we can combine efforts. You give me the formulae and information you want, I'll mine the data, program the formulas, and get you run the scripts to get you the answers?
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))

its a possibility. thus far, i have yet to successfully get anything that will actually read the .sql file. the mySql that i downloaded isnt doing anything.
fortknox (2059 D)

ah, not much of a db guy, eh? I wonder if MS Access can read it...

Basically, you need a mysql front end if you aren't familiar with how to run it on the command line.

Stats say that I resigned once when I didn't.
I believe I got the resigned thing one night when I was trying to join a live game. There were a lot of live games going on and many of them were having glitches. The game didn`t even start but I got a resigned in my stats anyway. It`s not a big deal but people might think I am a quitter so it would be nice if it was taken away.
