Russia Statistic
I need to relearn how to program (I haven't since Hyperstudio: go ahead and laugh all you programmers who know what that is lol ^_^) because this was boringly tedious and I would prefer statistics where I could play with the parameters being analyzed via a user friendly program

How much evidence is enough?
So, say I've watched the records of a pair of players and they consistently join games together and are always on the same side and always stab their allies to benefit the other player. How much evidence is enough to report them? The FAQ was a bit vague.

A Movement to bring back
First off, I want it to be known that I am in awe of the new update kestas is working on. I think it makes the site so much faster and easier to use and am excited for its full implementation! That being said... I feel that the terms "Update" and "Finalize" are so much more classy than "Update" and "Save" -- which are somewhat awkward and boring. Anyone with me, please voice your opinion here!

Game strategies for newbies
Hello everyone. I'm new to this site but played Diplomacy a bit at college years ago.
After browsing the forums a bit I've noticed mentions of named strategies in some posts e.g. "Alpine ambush" (I think this one was a joke though).
Is there somewhere that such strategies are displayed/discussed?
I 'm just looking to speed up my re-learning of the game and don't have the spare lifetime to trawl through all the games on the site.

Is this considered cheating?
Ok, I just finished an anon gunboat game, and decided to see who the two people I drew against were. They are judas User ID#: 18497, and duzenko User ID#: 18431. duzenko has finished 17 games, and judas has finished 18 games. ALL of duzenko's games have been with judas. And they have allied in each game. How wrong is this? I feel that I could have won the game had they not been 'allied' in the anon gunboat game. Seriously, let's ruin the fun.
SteevoKun (588 D)

That sounds mighty suspicious. I'm sure the mods will let you know if they appear to be the same person, but either way I'll certainly avoid them to keep from ending up in the same unfortunate mess you did.

While it's not in the spirit of Diplomacy (at least in my opinion) to ally with your friends in any game, behaving like that with regards to an anonymous game is certainly to be frowned upon.
BrightEyes (1030 D)

It sounds more like metagaming than multi-accounting to me.
Ursa (1617 D)
03 Nov 09 UTC
I am playing in a game with them both and they were both online just a moment ago, so I don't think multi-accounting is an issue.
JesusPetry (258 D)
03 Nov 09 UTC
But in anonymous games it's certainly a cheating form of metagaming, because you can't check their histories.
duzenko (175 D)
03 Nov 09 UTC
yep. no more anonymous games for me

anyway, before I am am banned I'd like to thank all the folks who have worked on this website - great game, great job!
Draugnar (0 DX)

So, duzenko, why do you metagame with your friend that way? It's clearly listed in the FAQ as being an unnaceptable action.

i really just don't understand what the point of this is, isn't it fun to stab your friends?
Ursa, how does that rule out multi accounting? It is easy to log on to several characters at once. Different web browsers, computers, modes of logging in and other methods that are easy for non-computer friendly users to figure out.
duzenko (175 D)
03 Nov 09 UTC
2 Draugnar - why if I can ally with any player why can't I ally with him
2 guy~~ - I don't like stabbing at all
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Nov 09 UTC
You can, but don't go into the game with a predetermined alliance. That is the problem. The fact that you have allied in every game gives the appearacne that you go into the game allied. That is wrong because then your friendship is taking precedence over the game and your alliance is unbreakable. At that point you may as well be multi-accounting. It has the same effect. this is not a game about unbreakable alliances, but a game of mistrust and negotiation. If you want unbreakable alliances, go play Axis and Allies.
SteevoKun (588 D)
03 Nov 09 UTC
@Duzenko

The problem is that it seems you and your friend allied in an anonymous game, in which no player should even know who anyone else is - let alone be able to conduct alliances/deals outside of in-game messages.
duzenko (175 D)
03 Nov 09 UTC
I see. The problem is half of players do not respond my attempts to negotiate, and half of the rest are never going to form alliances
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Nov 09 UTC
@duzenko - Simple question. did you and your friend talk about the anonymous game and, therefore, know what nation you each had in it? If so, you cheated. If you don't like the rules, don't play, but don't whine about them and expect them to change. This game is as old as me (I'm in my 40s) and has an established online presence via email and now web (and postal play before those). N one is going to change the rules just because you whine about them. Play by the rules, or go the fuck away.
duzenko (175 D)
03 Nov 09 UTC
alright
BrightEyes (1030 D)
03 Nov 09 UTC
It was ridiculous, in an anonymous gunboat game, two forces that don't attack each other the whole game, and at the end, I just couldn't hold them off... While the game was fun, the realization at the end was not. Draugnar, thank you for fighting the good fight while I was in class.
C-K (2037 D)

This happens quite a bit at low levels I think. I had reported 2 such situations. In both, when accused they admitted to being friends and playing together just like this guy. It sucks. I don't get why people do it.
Parallelopiped (691 D)
03 Nov 09 UTC
Because it's fun
Because they win
Because it winds people up
Same reason we all do the stuff we do.
Hibiskiss (631 D)
03 Nov 09 UTC
It's fun to win so that's why people do it. I join games with Geofram all the time and pretend that I want to work with him just so I can stab him at a horribly crippling moment.
Ursa (1617 D)
03 Nov 09 UTC
I must admit that's kinda funny. It is actually more fun and challenging to stab someone you know for a longer time. Perhaps the largeness of this site's population works in hand some kind of anonimity. Hey, another noob.
judas (953 D)
04 Nov 09 UTC
BrightEyes, sorry for this game. I didn't like it and there weren't any fun at this game for me, actually
StevenC. (1047 D(B))
04 Nov 09 UTC
So judas, you're admitting your guilt?

dukenzo, why metagame in the first place knowing you're going to get caught anyway?
Don't like the diploming part of Diplomacy, then just don't play. Play Axis and Allies which has unbreakable alliances or Risk which has no alliances and no diplomacy. For me, I love stabbing at the precise moment. Most players on this site breathe by that principle.
Ballack (2571 D)

Anon games suck. I just finished my first one, and found out when the names were revealed that a metagamer pair was part of it. I also have strong suspicions in my secon (and last) anon game. But that cheaters and metagamers are attracted by anon games has also a good side for us others---we should just avoid anon games and might be relatively safe, right?
Geofram (130 D(B))
04 Nov 09 UTC
Draugnar's got it right. If they were able to determine the country each other had and then played together as friends, they cheated.

@Hibiskiss, when it comes to stabs between us, I think I have you beat!
Geofram (130 D(B))
04 Nov 09 UTC
Wait this was a gunboat game as well? GTFO cheaters.
digitsu (1254 D)
04 Nov 09 UTC
@geofram Exactly, you aren't even suppose to COMMUNICATE in gunboat games at all. plain and simple. @duzenko, you cheated, but probably as you seem to know why now, you won't get banned. Just don't do it again. Gunboat means no communication. Not just no communication through this website. Communicating is cheating.
Anon games means you cannot know who is playing who. Unless you want to announce it to everyone. Basically, no privy information. All is public.
Thems the rules.

A First Comparison in the Progression of WIn % of Diplo Countries
I just took a quick survey of 200 non-anon, ppsc, public games ranging from the dates of Aug '06 - Mar '07. These are win percentage stats for the seven countries (it should be noted that Dangermouse won a lot of these games regardless of what country he played as). In the near future I will take more recent stats and compare them to see if there are any significant changes, and thus will make any potential theory for any possible revolution in Diplomacy Strategy to account for the change...
