Portuguese speaking players
I was wondering how many Portuguese speaking players are in here. Would like to create a game spoken in Portuguese if there are enough players and enough interest.

Sardinia and Corsica
Has anyone else noticed that Corsica is colored green for Italy while Sardinia is left as the neutral salmon color? This strikes me as being incorrect since the Kingdom of Italy definitely included Sardinia while Corsica was under France during this time period. Was this error part of the original board game?

New Game
I made a new game with 115 dip. It's called "Sorry Mario, but the Princess is in Clyde." Well...she's always been there. No one takes it, so that's why she never gets saved. ;_; Didn't you notice that England is pink like Peach? Anyway, join the game and save her... :)

Does poor spelling matter? Discuss
Someone spells caricatures incorrectly and it starts a debate. Should it? Should people pick others up on poor spelling when it is clear what the word should be? Is poor spelling a sign of low intelligence?

Gunboat Charicatures
Sorry, I've literally spent all day soaking up floodwater from my basement & was feeling kind of silly. I've never played a gunboat game, so I figured it was time. Please join, and make your messages an outrageous charicature of the accent from your assigned country.

joined, but gunboat usually means silent. are you meaning that its public press, or that if you communicate publicly (draws, pauses, ect.) that it has to be in an accent?
orathaic (1009 D(B))

accents, that's the best variant ever :)
Sorry, I wasn't aware that Gunboat was silent. It is a public press game. All communication should be in global chat & using charicature accents.
Oui, Aam 'oping for France.

does it bother you that you spelled it wrong
Not at all. Which word Oui, 'oping, or Aam?
Or Charicatures?
Ah yes. Caricature, oh well. like I said...long day.

@ CrazyAnglican: You specifically wanted to play a gunboat game, but you didn't know that gunboat meant 'no press'....

Out of interest what did you think "gunboat" meant?
@ rador Thanks for joining, I hope it will be fun.

@Jamie I apparently got Gunboat (as I stated not a term I'd heard before joining this site) confused with public press only, so in taking them as synonyms I didn't give much thought to what gunboat could have meant.

@ Maniac That's the idea :-) Why not join the game?

@ Acosmist (I'll elaborate) Codified spelling is basically a function of the printing press. Before it's wide use it was common to see the same word spelled two or three different ways in the same manuscript. William Shakespeare, for instance, spelled his name several different ways*. Names and basic everyday words had alternate spellings, but it wasn't that big a deal. One can make the argument that, with the advent of the Internet and text messaging, spelling will not need to be so rigid anymore, and that in a couple of hundred years our quaint, antiquated speech will be seen as stilted and it'll be one of those funny historical curiousities that people would point out a word that was "spelled wrong" even though they both knew exactly what was being conveyed.

@ everybody

sorry if I came off a bit grumpy this morning (I'll reiterate flooded house, etc.), but it just seems assinine to spam a thread about a game that you seem to have no intention of joining.
Maniac (189 D(B))

@crazy, i'm not joining game at the moment although this one could be fun.

Whilst i agree with your history of spelling, I have to disagree with your view of the future. spelling will become more important and not less important, and the reason for this is as you yourself have observed, people will pick you up on poor spelling. Although Charicatures <sic> was a good attempt at a word that you probably do not use that often, and presumably the 'h' was added because you thought the root word was character, someone still picked you up on it. It matters to a lot of people, in the same way people judge books by their covers or people by their shoes. People make instant judgements about intelligence based on your ability to spell.
@ Maniac

Yes, I agree with you on your outlook of the future. I do think that spelling will be one of the hallmarks of good writing for a long time to come. There is still a great difference between formal writing and informal. Generally, I'm an obsessive proofreader, but when everyone knows that you only get one shot as a message (no way that I've found to edit posts on this forum) it just seemed a bit over the top to insinuate that someone should feel bothered by an incorrectly spelled word. Even on writing tests at the college level, some consideration is given for timed tests and minor errors.

Like I said though, my response probably had more to do with the state of my house than the state of my grammar. So, I still apologize for coming off defensively.

also where would america be without it's national spelling bee competition?

do you really think the future will be that different?
Acosmist (0 DX)
22 Sep 09 UTC
The printing press was invented so...spelling matters now!

If you don't like truth for its own sake, perhaps you could think about the signaling function of correct spelling?

What a stupid argument to have! BE CORRECT. QED.
Who's arguing? I'm merely pointing out that it's a bit assinine to spam a thread about a game in which you seem to have no interest other than to salve your own ego by nit picking.
@ orathaic

No not really,

I'm quite a big proponent of correct spelling and spelling bee competitions for that matter (having conducted quite a few of them). I just couldn't resist the temptation of jerking Acosmist's chain a bit. He doesn't seem to have seen the myriad apologies for my own rude behavior in this thread.

This is silly. So Crazy Anglican misspelled a word. Yes it is better to spell words correctly, but this a forum not an English essay.
"Perhaps you should think about the signaling function of words"... yes Crazy Anglican shame on you! Not enough people think about the signaling function of words these days! :P

It is kind of silly that he got so defensive about it. I just asked if it bothered him that he did it!

And then all this. :wtf:

I wonder when this will be adopted here; in the 'Orders' that you can review after a turn, it notes when an order fails by underlining it and writing 'failed', such as: (Note this is a new map)

# The fleet at Gulf of Pelusium move to Alexandria. (failed)
