Will username changes ever be allowed?
It would be nice, even if it were time-limited (once a year, or so). Our profile pages could list previous aliases in an FKA list so that you could tell who others were.

Or tell me why it's a very bad idea! Bonus points for wanton indignation.

Game 11675, Gentlemen - DRAW outcome please
Can someone please check this game out and make it a DRAW. England and Germany have a perpetual stalemate line, and have both voted for DRAW. Turkey refuses to acknowledge the DRAW and wants to play on.
Is there any way this can be adjuticated by a higher authority ?

Why isn't a player's IP address shown next to his username?
There are often accusations of multi-accounting, and it's still too easy to get away with it--or, more importantly, to suspect others erroneously. If admins are likely to respond to these accusations by examining IP addresses, why can't the website show each player's IP address to the other players playing with him?

Why is it that convoys can cover unlimited distances?
I mean, I know it's always been part of the rules, and I know that the game is abstract, and not meant to be realistic, but does anyone know why the game was originally designed so that convoys could go all the way round the board? Why is it not limited to, say, 2 or 3 fleets?

Diplomacy Variant
Allies and Entente

Rules:
airborne (154 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
Allies is the Entente
The Central Powers are the forces which fought the Allies
Knights Dawn (100 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
1. Italy, Germany, Austria, and Turkey MUST be allies till death
2. France and England MUST be allies till death.
3. Russia is allies with France and England until 1905, when he can choose which side he is on and must post it over global chat.
4. All neutral nations must be taken before war against enemy nations can commence.

Knights Dawn (100 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
Wrong, It was the Triple Alliance (Germany, Italy *in the beginning* and Austria), and the Triple Entente (France, England, and Russia)
airborne (154 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
1. Italy was allied with Germany and Austria in treaty but, switched to the Allies in 1915
3. Russia was fully committed to the Allies till the revolution they fought with remarkable ability
4. The only Neutral nations to join the war was Belgium, Portugal, Rumania, Serbia, Greece, and Bulgaria the rest stayed neutral
airborne (154 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
Central Powers
Knights Dawn (100 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
Division of Neutral Nations:
Germany:
Holland
Denmark
Sweden

Austria:
Serbia
Albania

Turkey:
Greece
Bulgaria

Italy:
Tunis
Spain

France:
Belgium
Spain
North Africa

England:
None

Russia:
Norway
Rumania
airborne (154 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
is the same as the Triple alliance which was created by Bismarck to keep France and Russia from doing anything out of line and to "control" Italy and Austria
Knights Dawn (100 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
The Treaty that joined Italy with Austria and Germany was called the 'Triple Alliance'
airborne (154 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
and it was just that, Italy became neutral and later switched.
Germany allied with Turkey during the Autumn after it's cruisers was chased into Con. Thus creating the Central Powers
airborne (154 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
Italy knew that it could not be fighting Britain and France due to the fact that Italy's fleet couldn't even defeat the Austrian Navy. Britain had the number 1 navy in the world, France had the 4th
Knights Dawn (100 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
But in the beginning it was originally just Austria-Hungary, Germany, and Italy or the Triple Alliance. In 1901 (Diplomacy's start date.) It was the Triple Alliance.
airborne (154 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
yes it is I would not believe that Italy would stay allied.
The game is based off of 1914 not 1900 if it was 1900 then Turkey would control most of the Balkans. Here is a variant which shows the Diplomacy in the 1900 http://www.diplom.org/Online/maps/1900-large.pdf
Knights Dawn (100 D)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Map_Europe_alliances_1914-en.svg

And here is a map of Military allies in 1914
airborne (154 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
another fact is that Russia and France were bounded in any sort of way, Britain was neutral and did not really join the Duel Alliance till later.
trim101 (363 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
in this variant england would be very very boring to play
airborne (154 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
do you want 1914 or 1900?
If 1914 you want Italy neutral and have the player decide
Russia, England, France vs. Germany, Austria, Turkey
If 1900 you want Italy, Turkey and England neutral
with France and Russia vs. Germany and Austria
airborne (154 D)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4f/WWI-re.png
this is a more realistic map of the alliances of WWI
Knights Dawn (100 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
Yes it did, the United Kingdom was in the war since the start.

And the reason I put it so Russia had a choice in 1905 is because of the Bolshevik Revolution.

@Trim101: I know, but England didn't have much Imperialism on the map, and I didn't mean to put Spain for France. But now that I think about it, after the Napoleonic Wars, england did have a lot of control in Portugal so we can give them that.
airborne (154 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
Yes that was after 1900, when Germany built up her fleet, threaten the empire, the unhidden danger of Germany's wanted exspansion
Knights Dawn (100 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
@Airborne: The problem still is out there that the game is SET IN EUROPE AND YOU GAVE ME A MAP OF THE WORLD!

Knights Dawn (100 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
Germany built up her fleet in the late 1800's! Britain had a hatred of Germany since its take over of Denmark in the Austrian-Hungarian conflict.
airborne (154 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
in 1905 Russia did have a revolution which wasn't Bolshevik and Russia lost the Russo-Japanense War which reduced Russia into a power of 2nd class for awhile, allowing Austria to take over Bosnia
airborne (154 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
yes because it was called WWI Germany had fought a global war.
In are you kidding me do you even know the size of the Germany fleet in the late 1800s? Germany's warship tonnage in
1880 88,000 vs Britain 650,000
1890 190,000 vs Britain 679,000
1900 285,000 vs Britain 1,065,000
1910 964,000(!) vs 2,174,000
airborne (154 D)

You must understand the naval race did not start till 1906 with the completion of HMS Dreadnought which rendered all battleships made before that obsolete
airborne (154 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
and the map still shows Europe it's not like Europe disappeared on the world.
airborne (154 D)
17 Jul 09 UTC
I recommend you read Europe's Last Summer by David Fromkin which tells of the pre-war sitution
also I recommend reading about 1880-1914 in Rise and Fall of the Great Powers by Paul Kennedy

@Airborne:

Do you know how many subs Germany had? How about England? Germany outnumbered English subs 4/1! And because of the Prussian take over of Paris in the mid-1800's, they were rich AND producing powerful weapons from the Krupp Factories in Essen/ Germany!

Excellent example of a pissing contest.
airborne (154 D)
20 Jul 09 UTC
No Prussia was not rich in the sense of currency, Germany was constantly out of cash becuase of the huge capital grants given to the industries and armed forces. Paris was occupied and France was forced to pay reparations you make it sound like they controlled Paris the whole time (Further proving my theroy that the French army must alway be underestimated)
submairnes do not win wars, they make fighting wars harder.
The British Navy thought the submarines as unfair thus did not build many. True U-boats did cause many problems but, you must note that britain had the largest merchant fleet in the World and the American could make a boat and send it across the Altantic faster than German can sink it. Also Submarines rely on preying on single ships once Britain (finally) adopted a convoy system loses were cut by a large margin.
KaiserAl32 (135 D)
20 Jul 09 UTC
"Russia was fully committed to the Allies till the revolution they fought with remarkable ability" not even mentioning all of their extremely talented generals, who are widely credited with developing the theory that the best way to win a battle is to drown your enemies in the blood of your peasant soldiers. The ability of the Russians didn't count for much in the face of supply shortages, poor training, and a steady loss of morale.
airborne (154 D)
20 Jul 09 UTC
The British Navy thought the submarines as unfair and ungentlemanly thus did not build many and one they did were of horrible design*
you remind me of Neville Chamberlain and his view of Germany's army in 1938.
KaiserAl32 (135 D)

I think the First World war was catastrophic for western civilization. If it could have been avoided, perhaps the 19th century could have gone on for ever!
airborne (154 D)
20 Jul 09 UTC
Yes, I admit the Russia officers are not of the highest class but, you cannot say any other nation was better off in tactics 1914-16 BUT, Russia had two great generals in command Nikolay Ivanov and Aleksey Brusilov. Russia won many victories againist the Austrian and the Turks almost so finding a Russia defeat againist them is rare however this turns around when fighting againist the Germans. You will have to choose the angle of the view.
airborne (154 D)

One event is responible for all of the disasters of the 20th century France's declaration of War on Prussia after the Ems Dispatch.
airborne (154 D)
20 Jul 09 UTC
Ahem...has anyone actually shown interest in playing this variant yeah?
airborne (154 D)
20 Jul 09 UTC
Also worth noting German U-Boats might of lost WWI for Germany with the sinking of the Lusitania and Unrestricted submarine warfare which got the USA fully in the war. (ironic isn't it) However there are historians who believe that if Germany built submarines instead of almost useless battleships that Germany could of won WWI.

Problem with Ghost Rankings
It counts variants... I play a lot of variants which aren't really true to the game. Some people (like me) are disproportionally good at variants. Variants tend to be played by people that read the forums. People that read the forums tend to have higher (Ghost)ratings. IMHO, it would be better for variants to be taken out of Ghost Rankings, especially as they, in general, are more likely to end in draws.
