If you can't build a unit as you don't have enough free SCs, can you build in the following Spring (assuming you now have an empty SC)? Or do you have to wait until the following Autumn

i have to say, the graphic looks fantastic.
good work, although you should have gone through the north atlantic to reduce the needed number of fleets...

still i really like the blue lines converging... (also that wasn't the livelyest of game, no england building in london and austria wasn't really opposing you...)
Submariner (111 D)
18 Jun 09 UTC
The point was to use the biggest number of fleets possible!! It wouldn;t have been the fabled 9 fleet convoy if I had only used 8 now would it?!

Hi there, I've been playing austria in this one.

First of all this was my second game of Diplomacy ever. I took over CD austria in... 1903 i guess after everyone turned on me. :)

It was on purpose that Italy got his home centers back, and the "attack" on rome was set up as a stalemate to allow italy to recover... since Germany and Turkey were both complete morons, leaving Italy as the only "realiable" ally.

In the end it worked quite well for me... I got my points back and gained a lot of experience... especially that you can only trust your foes. ;)

Not only the last move in interesting imho. Was a very exciting game.
I'm not a big fan of these threads. They come up every couple months. Delaying the game so you can take 23 centers, kill off everyone else, and perform Diplomatic masturbation to soothe your ego...?
Xapi (194 D)
19 Jun 09 UTC
You won the game with 23 SCs.

Saying that the convoy was "to win the game" is rather pushing it.

@rador... A detour through IRI and GoL would have been excessive I think ;)

And, yes, I absolutely do have germ and Ibu-Hirsch to thank for bouncing off one another in Rome.

@ Xapi. When I first joined this site, I was in a game where someone did a 'Round The Map' at the end of the game, but the player mentioned that it was contrived, all the players were involved in it and it had no bearing on the match. You're right to say I could have won the game a year sooner, but I saw the opportunity to work the move so held on two seasons more.

@ Dingleberry. If this was Dipmasturbation, does that make the final graphic with my convoy the cum shot?
No Submariner. It just makes you someone I'd make it a point not to play with.

Well, your move had no bearing on the match either, that's my point.
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
19 Jun 09 UTC
That's a bit po-faced of you, Dingleberry. I think Submariner's mega convoy is amusing enough. If this thread doesn't amuse you, you could just have ignored it. Instead you had to make a grumpy, "I'm better than you because I take everything seriously which proves how intelligent I am" comment...
WA-Kusiag (120 D)
19 Jun 09 UTC
well first off, weak sisters ftw, idk if you started with that alliance and went from there, but it sure as heck looks that way, and the massive convoy, very nice touch with supports i might add. Also the 23 centers is while overkill, quite impressive, i must say, very very convincing win overall.
Jamie,
Thats not the point at all. If you've won any games, and had an ally at the end, you'd realize that if you are willing to wait an extra year or two for it, it isn't that difficult to arrange an around the horn. And as I said, periodically we get some new player who wants to say 'Look at me!'. If you have 17 SCs and an ally with at least 5, you've got 22 of 34, and can do whatever you want. So this convoy is simple to arrange.

However, delaying the game for selfish gratification is disrespectful to the other players in your game. It has nothing to do with me being grumpy. I have tremendous fun playing this game, whether I'm winning or losing. I just try to have respect for my enemies.
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
19 Jun 09 UTC
@Dingle:

"delaying the game for selfish gratification is disrespectful to the other players in your game"

"Delaying" the game so you can take 23 centres (as you referenced in your earlier comment) is not disrespectful - it's an integral part of PPSC play, because you get bigger winnings for winning with 23 SCs than you do if you take a standard 18 SC win - so the PPSC format encourages this sort of play.

And while you're taking up position to make your final move, which will grab you your 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd and 23rd SC's, if you also want to do a silly convoy - well it's only a bit of fun, eh?
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
19 Jun 09 UTC
(Plus, it was a 12-hour-per-turn game, so in the greater scheme of things, one extra turn isn't much of a delay anyway)
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
19 Jun 09 UTC
(But of course, if someone did this in a 100-years-per-turn game, even I might get a bit annoyed).
Xapi (194 D)
19 Jun 09 UTC
You don't get bigger winnings like that, it's capped at 18 SCs.
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
19 Jun 09 UTC
@Xapi:

No it isn't. You're mistaken. This issue has been discussed on the forum before. Unless the game's code has been changed in the last couple of weeks, I can assure you that a 23 SC win gives the winner more points than an 18 SC win.
EdiBirsan (1469 D(B))
19 Jun 09 UTC
Horray for you. Everyone should do this at least once. It can also be fun if you can get 4 or more other parties to participate in the convoy and then use all the sea provinces as convoyers including Adriatic, Lyon, North Sea, Helgoland, Skaggerak etc.
Xapi (194 D)
19 Jun 09 UTC
I had the same idea, and have been told otherwise last time it was discussed.
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
19 Jun 09 UTC
Seriously Xapi, whoever told you that was mistaken. You get more winnings the more SC's you have when you win. It is not capped at 18.
Xapi (194 D)
19 Jun 09 UTC
I believe it was figle, who has been working on the code.
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
19 Jun 09 UTC
Well maybe they plan to change it, but as of a couple of weeks ago I was assured, by at least one Mod, that if you win with more than 18 centres, you get more points.
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
19 Jun 09 UTC
Actually, can someone confirm this please?
figlesquidge (2131 D)
19 Jun 09 UTC
Hello, you called. Bit of a rubbish answer after all this, but although you're not supposed to, the sf code version suggests you will get more points for a >18 finish. However I'm not sure if Kestas has updated this site, so I'm sorry to say I'm not sure.
Hope that helps a little, sorry its such a weak response!
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
19 Jun 09 UTC
In what way are you "not supposed to" ?
djbent (2572 D(S))
19 Jun 09 UTC
we recently did syr-edi with 8 fleets that very much served to help win the game quicker (i think) in autumn 1906 of this game:

http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=9593

i kind of like the graphic in that case even better than the one to stp.
Onar (131 D)
19 Jun 09 UTC
I was on the other end of that convoy. Doesn't feel too good to be that person.
Xapi (194 D)
19 Jun 09 UTC
@Jamie:

It's not in the spirit of the game.

The intention has always been that 18 is the cap, and Ghost ratings take that into account.

I do not know if the code has been updated or not, I had been told it was.
Glorious93 (901 D)
19 Jun 09 UTC
But the points system makes it a different game (for better or worse, but thats an argument for a different topic.) You are competing against EVERYONE on the site for points, even though there are only 7 per game.

On a side note, though, I've never gone over 18 centers myself...
Glorious93 (901 D)
19 Jun 09 UTC
Just to clarify: "7 per game" of course refers to players - not points.
Julien (2065 D)
20 Jun 09 UTC
not long ago kestas confirmed that the code has not been updated yet but it is his intention to do so.
in any case, as things stand for now, u get more points with 23 SCs than 8.
Julien (2065 D)
20 Jun 09 UTC
than 18 I meant.
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
20 Jun 09 UTC
In that case, until the code is actually updated, you can't blame people for going for 19+ SC wins. DangerDave is particularly good at it.
Submariner (111 D)
20 Jun 09 UTC
What is wrong with collecting PPSC above 18 SCs?
If its a serious question, then I'll answer. You win the game at 18. You COULD delay victory, forcing your opponents to continue playing a game they no longer have any hope of winning or any interest in, for YEARS and YEARS trying to get yourself into the best position to take 23 or 25 or whatever in a single year.

The object of this game is winning. Points were added to the online game for reasons not related to the game. Playing for points, being a point whore, is frowned upon by many.
