I think the protests are more about Ayatollah Khamenei and the Iranian system then they are about the presidential election outcome. The people want change.

I hope the Iranian tyranny is overthrown by the people. They know what they want and I applaud them for doing something about it.

The protesters have no chance of winning as they define it: the over turn of the election and an immediate change of the structure of Iranian society.

I feel so dirty disagreeing with EdiBirsan, but I don't think talking in absolutes is an accurate way of describing the situation. The fact that the protests are still going on and still have such an intensity means that the people have a real will to see a change. It's improper to assume what will happen either way, but this is a very big deal for Iran and things will be seriously altered there, one way or the other.

It's more than just elections now. Khamenei has completely sided with Ahmadinejad so there's no chance of a rerun of the election or even a recount of the votes.

Neither side can give in. This is more than a disputed election now, it's a direct, popular challenge to the current system there. I won't pretend to know what will happen next, but the significance and potential of these protests should not be underestimated.

On the topic: I'm surprised there aren't more people outside Iran supporting the far right conservatism of the current government. Granted its not good for us if they decide to ignore the United Nations or Team America World Police, but even so.
Saying that, I'm always in favour of free elections and personally I would much rather see the opposition win. I think part of the issue as Invictus says is that the power structure in existence leaves the government as just a front in some area's. For a more moderate party to take control they'll first have to remove the higher powers supporting Ahmadinejad

we all heard a lot of dodgy ever changing reasons for invading iraq but i dont recall "stopping genocide" as one of them.

if by any chance you are referring to the kurds then yes what Hussein was doing to them was terrible, but no less terrible than what a lot of other countries were/are doing to their minorities.
