And so it begins - Rollback Cheating
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=6792
In this game, pre-rollback, my lunge for North Sea as Russia was successful; Nilocy (England) altered Denmark's orders to something he NEVER would have dared do without knowing what was going to happen in advance to block it.
What now?

something this site needs
this site needs a way to search the database of users in this game to look at their profiles. otherwise, its a horrendous search on forums, open games, etc to find the player youre looking for. it would also be nice to add players to a list of people you keep tabs on like a buddy list.

Obsession
I think I have an obsession with this game. I haven't found any game this fun since risk. I am playing a total of thirteen games and I'm constantly online checking, even though I have research papers to work on. It doesn't help that I joined all fast games and people on this site are always on to play and message. I think I need help.

Why did this move fail?
http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=6704
I'm usually pretty good about answering this type of question for others, but I don't see it this time.
Italy moves Tyrollia to Vienna and Bohemia supports it. Why did it fail?

Perpetually paused games...

What happens to paused games that never get unpaused? Are the points invested in those games simply lost?
If the whole idea of the point system is to never allow a player to have less than a hundred points either invested in a game or available how does one resolve paused games that one or more players refuse to unpause?

Mr. Birsan, a world champion!
I was looking for the board game axis and allies when I stumbled across this article. I had no Idea we've been playing with such a prestigious player.
General Sean (233 D)

"Edi Birsan is considered the first Diplomacy world champion for his win in 1971BC, the first championship invitational game. He has won numerous championship games since then in North America and worldwide and is universally considered one of the game's top players. More importantly, he has striven tirelessly for over three decades to promote Diplomacy play in all its forms, at all levels, all around the world."

Well Done Mr. Birsan!

Haha. Well, you must have missed when he first came here then. There was quite a hubbub about him. I've just finished playing a game with him, and I'm happy to say he lives up to expectations.

if i hadnt have seen the "BC" in that article i would've assumed we were talking about 1971AD

You've never played Diplomacy in the BC times? You get to play as the Egyptians, Sumerians, Hittites, Assyrians, and the Indus Valley Civilization
Lol, is Mr. Birsan on PHPdip?
General Sean (233 D)

BC, I hadn't noticed. Sure enough though, it is written that way on the website. I need to write that company an e-mail.
EdiBirsan (1469 D(B))

Actually I have been often ribbed by the 71BC designation. In postal games, there was a universal numbering system established by John Boardman (the first person to start a postal Diplomacy magazine in 1963).
The game number was the year then the letter 'A' for the first game played and then BA for the 28th game etc.
If you want a full EGO sheet for me then the North American Diplomacy Associations All Star sheet is enough to make me blush... and get me attacked again and again in Spring 01 by what is called the 'gunslinger effect'.
Go here if you want the full EDIfication of my background:
http://www.diplom.org/NADF/edi.htm
or just put my name in Google.
(( now that my hat size has swollen, I will return to my games where I am struggling to make it past multiple stabs...again!))

OH... and it is and has always been just Edi.
Mr. Birsan was dear ole dad.
OK, so this guy -- above -- is the man in the article? That's great ... And he's only got 621 pts. ;-)

A pleasure indeed. My only game with Edi so far was somewhat curtailed by my foolish trust in another decent player. I look forward to a new game...

Truly a pleasure.

only 621 points? He joined after I did and I was thrilled to be at like 120 when he was at around 40 - because he had to spend some points to get into games. Now I've slowly increased my points to 147, which I feel fine about and I watched Edi go past 200, then 300, then 400 then 500 and now 600!! that's 600 points in just a couple months!! It's freaking amazing!

His secret to gaining points is not losing a single game.
EdiBirsan (1469 D(B))
08 Dec 08 UTC
As an aside on points, I do not play for the points. I think all the games I have played here with one exception, have been dropped positions: most of them countries that have not moved in 1901.
The point system here is interesting but at the same time not a motivator for me. In fact I have often ended some of the game early in what I call a more social ending that are in direct conflict with the philosophy that one would expect for this scoring system.

Signalseven (116 D)
08 Dec 08 UTC
I agree with Edi about the point system. A vast majority of the games I've played (and wiped out) in were CD's that I picked up simply to add to a game that would have been less fun had I not.

Points aren't the motivation of playing here. Playing is and always will be the biggest motivation for playing here.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

Whoa... so you're for real Edi? Alright then. I will savor this last moment of having more points than you. Even though you don't care about points.

Edi I didn't catch an answer in the block thingy thread, what do you do for a living? Someone answered for you but I'd like to hear from you. Dip related or non-dip related?

Since I left Grad School (International Poltiics at City University of NY) I have been in the then developing Cargo Container business. 13 years with one of the major companies eventually as Assistant Vice President for the Pacific Rim (prior to that in London as Assistant VP for Europe/Africa/Middle East) and then for the last 23 years or so as head of my own small business (there are 2 of us) that works in the Cargo Container business. Initially in the leasing of domestic equipment/government contracts/container sales/equipment inspection, and currently (since 2001) we have concentrated on equipment inspection /Certification and cargo claims.
Everyone uses diplomacy at work...the positive side of the Game...namely talking to people with different views and goals and trying to match those with your own.

Anybody anticipating Sicarius to espouse an eloquent shoplifting/anti-commercialism/anti-capitalism manifesto in the next 24 hours or so?

League Notice on roll back
If the game you are in has been set back by a phase, for fairness' sakes you are expected to order the same moves as you did before. I hope everyone will comply, because, if they do not, it will be a right headache for me to get to the bottom of it.
