Comments on whether this is worth pursuing.
It's not perfect, but something needs to be done to hold a light up to the perpetrators.

Monsters turned friendly
I was wondering if there was anyone else somewhat enraged over how every ideal about classic monsters is changing.

National Animals, if any
Germany would be an eagle, England a lion, France the Gallic rooster, Russia a bear. What would Italy, Austria, and Turkey be?

Orson Scott Card's Article
I read this article a while ago and forgot to post it here. Card is one of my favorite authors and someone who I admire and respect.
I would like to hear your opinions on Card's article.

Advice, Please?
This is unrelated to my thread "Liberals"
I'm Germany. I've moved into Tyrolia, and I can't decide who to attack. Austria or Italy? I have already taken hostile action towards Austria, but I think I can smooth things over with him. I also know of several countries who would be interested in helping me against Austria. Furthermore, Austria has taken hostile action towards Italy. Austria would be interested in forming an alliance to take down Italy. Who should I side with?

ps: I know that's not quite 10k users as the first 9 were fake accounts, but even so!
The "traitors" have 10,918! Not taking sides or anything just I thought I'd mention the comparison.

Interesting stats :-o

phpdiplomacy.net: Logged on:77 Registered:10005 Pages served: 13784932
Facebook phpdiplomacy: Logged on:53 Registered:11705 Pages served: 3322675

The best thing about the traitors is that I can include their numbers within my own :-) http://playdiplomacy.com/LICENSE.txt

But yep kudos everyone, the actual community isn't 20k+ people of course but activity has grown constantly for months, and there's lots of good features to come
I think thanks to active web communities like these there has been no better time to be a Diplomacy player or to become a Diplomacy player

Anyway here's to 10000 more, and many more meaningless but fun milestones along the way :-)

"Not taking sides or anything" - do, we're right they're wrong!
Kestas, how many active members are there on this site then? could you do a quick check of people who've logged in in the last week or something please?
Chrispminis (916 D)
14 Nov 08 UTC
Hooray! I was planning on posting this when it got to 10000 but I forgot. Luckily figlesquidge had the same idea. Great minds think alike... But then, fools seldom differ.

It's an ultimately arbitrary milestone... but for just over two years since the inception of phpDip this growth is incredible.
Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))

Conception, you mean?
Chrispminis (916 D)
15 Nov 08 UTC
I'm pretty sure inception also works...
spyman (424 D(G))

The site's conception would have been when Kestas first thought of the site.

Btw it says on Wikipedia that phpdiplomacy started in 2004.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Diplomacy
That's not right is it? - since Kestas joined in August 2006.
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
15 Nov 08 UTC
fig; About 1100 for .net and Facebook each, but activity doesn't have any bearing on whos right in that debate I think

spyman; I started work on phpDip, posted the first source and news etc, in Dec 2004. Aug '06 is when 0.72 was released, which was the last version where I just deleted the old database when I installed the new version
Chrispminis (916 D)
15 Nov 08 UTC
Oh my, I had no idea. There was even a long, long before time from when I joined? Do we have any relics of that age still here?
spyman (424 D(G))
15 Nov 08 UTC
So Kestas do you mean that this site was up and running by 2005? Did you have many players?
Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))
16 Nov 08 UTC
Not many at all until 2007, when 0.75 came out.
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
16 Nov 08 UTC
Yup there'd usually be a game or two going on back then at best, and up until 0.72 it was pretty unstable

Also it ran at phpdiplomacy.kuliukas.com before I registered phpdiplomacy.net at ~0.75, so when phpdiplomacy started depends on whether you mean the code, the site, the database, or the domain name

Here's the sourceforge icon tracker graph for anyone interested:

Very interesting. I can see the little jump at December 06, where my friends and I joined. What happened through early 2007 though?

Patch followed by steady decline due to CD followed by massive increase with points. Reason why we will never have a different point system- too much hangs on it
figlesquidge (2131 D)
16 Nov 08 UTC
Ghost, how can you say that - you weren't here back then :S
That was a very notable patch though, because it was around Christmas that you stopped taking SC's in spring, or building in any SC etc...
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
17 Nov 08 UTC
I used the graph in a thread TGM was in which defended the points system. Here's a labeled graph: http://tinyurl.com/6kuwwj
MoLester (116 D)

I can speak somewhat to the recent user spike. Some unnamed big corporations banned Solitaire and the like on company computers, and an unnamed source sent a mass email to tell people to play webgames instead, including phpDip.
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
17 Nov 08 UTC
Thats interesting, I didnt know about that, but actually the spike at 0.81 was because Facebook phpDip started using the same codebase at that point, so they contributed to the sourceforge icon hits, which caused the sudden jump

let's talk about holly-wood actors and new cell phones and the latest fashions and television shows and who likes who and the newest song on the radio and all the coolest video-games that are out and all the other completely pointless bullshit that fills so many peoples lives and makes them absolutely oblivious to how our world is falling apart around our ears

At the bottom of the joinable games listings there is a game titled Europe at War-4...with a zero point buy in. It doesn't let you actually join the game, but why is it there?

Post bug
I posted a couple of months back that I occasionally would make an in-game post and it would disappear instead of being posted. It was suggested to me that it was due to having multiple windows open. I may know better what is the problem.
