Looking for the opinion of my esteemed peers out there
Is there ever a time when intentionally bouncing yourself would be a good strategy to confuse people you are playing with? If so what sorts of situations would be appropriate for that?

An allowance for Preference
Kestas, you are doing an excellent job moderating this site, and currently, in my opinion, this is the premier online Diplomacy site. I do think, however, that giving the creator of a game the option to set country preferences would give the game a new dynamic. This change would of course mean first-come, first-serve. I find that often players constantly receive the same country/coutries and this can lead to monotony(me-The German powers). Please consider this change.

Country selection.
I would like to know if there any system that defines the country that each player plays in a game. I mean, I played many times Italy and I got a bit bored. Also, I have yet to play a game with Turkey which is my favourite.

Is it just luck? Or is it connected with you DP or any other factor?

Helping the board
I posted in a thread a bit ago, but it was displaced, and has vanished into the wastelands. Not that I have time *now*, but if I did, how would I help the board?

What is the default retreat order?
I know that, according to the rules, the unit should be disbanded if no retreat order is entered, but does it work the same way on this site?

Spain question
If you have a unit on the south coast of spain, going to mid-atlantic, and an enemy unit is trying to go from mid-atlantic to north coast of spain, can they switch? If the south coast of spain unit is supported, and displaces the mid-atlantic unit, can it retreat to north coast of spain?

What happens if the number of people signed up is not divisible by seven, it seems as though some players would be left out of certain rounds, unless there is a way so that someone doesn't play at all in round one but has two games in round two. Anyone that knows, how does this work?

Lol good point how'd he manage that?
With computers you have to be very specific and so it didn't notice that Signalseven and signalseven are the same.
He must be trying to improve his odds! He knows that everyone will be watching him closely since he's the reigning co-champion! Maybe we should just disqualify him :)

I didn't bother to put case insensitive checking in, so that made it through. I'd noticed that myself and just got around to removing the dup. So there goes his insidious plan. :)

I am not sure I quite get the idea behind the scoring system which is :

Solo victory in a game = 36 points
Participation in a draw = 34/# of players involved in the draw
Surviving a game = # of SCs you control at the end of the game

So if there are 3 players left and the centers are 13-13-8
if you go for the 3 way draw the players with the 13 get about 11+ points each. they are actually better off agreeing to have one of them go for a solo win and kill the 8 guy because if the game ends 18=16 the player with the 16 does better off than being in a three way draw.

Seems odd to have a situation where you are better off if someone else wins, other than the fact that that person has more points than you. But then again when it comes to advancing to the next round or getting into a top board, it may not matter if they have 1 more point than you or 20.

Anyone else think the scoring system is encouraging an odd sort of play>?
Then again all scoring systems are odd in many ways, so maybe I should restate that as:
is the scoring system giving an acceptable result as a background incentive to play in an acceptable achievement recognition system?

You do bring up a valid concern, Edi. The key elements are this:
* there are only minimally (if any) more spots for round 2 than there are games in round 1
* winning 1 game gives more points than two 16 center survivals and more than two 2-way draws
With these two factors it makes more sense for someone who cannot win a game to ensure no one else does in order to maximize his or her chances of moving on to the next round.

FYI - I ruptured my Achilles tendon playing basketball tonight. I ruptured my other Achilles two years ago, so I know the drill, no big deal. Anyway, I may have surgury tomorrow or maybe Tuesday, so I'm hoping whatever game I'm in that maybe it can start a day or two late if need be, though I guess I don't really know when they're supposed to start anyway...

Not sure how the number of people in Round 2 equal the number of GAMES in round 1. if there is no multiple of 7 in round 1. Do you then take the number of additional players to make up a multiple. so if there were 8 games in round one then you would have to take the top 14 players to make 2 games in round 2.

In that case there is an even more interesting situation. Let us say we are in 7 games in round 1 and you are in the last game. The other 6 games have all ended in a win. Then the players in game 7 could collectively decide that the best alternative is to restructure their game with 6 players at 5 each and then one player at 4 so that all 6 players can make it to the second round, Therefore it is in your tournament interest to drag the game out till you have a handle on the result of the other games unless you are going to win quickly.
This is one of the reasons that I always look at Tournament Diplomacy as a Variant.

You misread Edi, its the other way around. There are about equal games in round one as there are players in round two. So if we had 49 players (I think its around that) then that would be 7 games and then we would pick the seven best and form a championship game. Or atleast thats my understanding.

I see noone responded to MadMarx. I for one think that a severe injury isn't justification for a game pause. Better luck next year.

That's cool if the show must go on, but it may not be an issue depending on when the games start. I should have surgery on Thursday or Friday and then will have lots of time lying around for diplomacy... Anyway, didn't figure a day or two would hurt anything, but again, no worries, I will be waiting to do a lot of things this fall, like walking!! :-)

All possible diplmacy games.
Hi Guys,
Given the finite number of sc's and only 7 major powers, there has to be some sort of closure on all the possible games in diplomacy, i wonder what is the maximum possible number of practical diplomacy games. Practical considering that all 7 powers are played by 7 different reasonably logical people.

Very slow play so you don't have to check up on the game every day (and can skip weekends if you need to). Serious players wanted (none of those namby pamby players that drop out after 1902).
