Ok, I've got a question about moves and failed moves, that I'm pretty sure I know the answer to but wanted to put to the community. See below.

Back in the day...
Do you guys remember the first megathread? By that I mean the first to top 100 posts. I think it was about poltical alignment. Before that the 50 or 60 some-odd threads about historical figures playing diplomacy seemed huge, but not so much now.

Face-to-Face versus Online ?
Has anybody played both 'versions' of the game often enough to comment on the differences in play, i.e. in negotiations?
Do you find people are more likely to stab sitting miles away behind a computer screen?
Does it hinder negotiations to have to write in text without facing your friend/foe eye to eye?

Online Election Game
I'm not a big poster in forums. I usually have just enough time to do my moves before time runs out, so you haven't seen any messages from me here before. I am writing now because I would like to tell you about a new project I have recently put online. Inspired by the presidential elections this year I decided to set up a website about elections and create an online election game.

OK I've read through all the postings here and filtered out the questions and suggestions. I have answered them on the blog accompanying the site and game (http://blog.yourelection.net). Visit the blog and please continue to comment, either here or on the blog. I have also made some suggestions on how the players can communicate with each other.

Again thanks for your input :-)

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it but game password would be nice.

Whats the process that decides the votes? My housemate and I have become obsessed but find that spending doesn't always matter.
Baldur (342 D)

What do you mean by "game password"?

I have posted the answer to you question to the blog (http://blog.yourelection.net)
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

Chris are you going to be missing the turn here?

Game password means a password to protect the game so that you can get a certain match-up.

I threw everything at New York and hoped I would get it, along with a few of the smaller states too (including Delaware where I missed out by a tiny percentage,

Delaware 3 40.44% (-0.96) 39.78% (+0.96).
Also Maine etc. Thought I might be able to sneak it.

Damn! Well played Ghostie, I concede you did well on that. What strategy did you use?
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
31 Oct 08 UTC
Well, the winning score is 270, so if I was going to win/tie I needed to stop you from getting that. You had 266 going into that last round, so needed 3 to tie. Vermont I knew you would be funding, and you had a healthy lead there, so I decided the best thing was to let you have that and steal Alaska, which I guessed you wouldn't defend.

Having lost Alaska and won Vermont, you were still on 266, so any state of the remaining "too close to call" states would have stopped me from winning, so I just split the money between those states taking the various positions (I was winning in Delaware so did less there than elsewhere) and hoped for the best.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

I might have over funded the campaign in Alaska though...

I feel like i'm missing something, though. You're campaigning in Illinois, right? I spent a million dollars there and didn't even gain 1%!

Oh, and please stop campaigning in California. I don't enjoy having to swat flies.

aoe3rules (949 D)
01 Nov 08 UTC
Didn't you start with a 5% lead?
Centurian (3257 D)
01 Nov 08 UTC
Well I think thats misleading because the Republicans have a ton of huge margins in alot of the Southern States.
aoe3rules (949 D)
01 Nov 08 UTC
yeah. actually, it was only 3%, although you might want to note the overly liberal populations of Illinois (50-35), Massachusetts (60-30), and the District of Colombia (95-0.01).
aoe3rules (949 D)

Darn California. That's what happens when i try to ask politely.

Downtime
I think we went down for a while, so I added 2 hours onto all the games. I'll post the response to the support ticket when I get it :-(

In a future version it'll detect when there has been downtime and delay processing, so no-one will miss out on turns. For now hope no-one missed out, apologies if you did

What's your favorite country to play and why?
I like Germany, because of the variety of options you have as a player. Obviously its central location can be problematic, but with the right use of diplomacy it can be a very adaptable, flexible country that can benefit from any combination of weak/strong countries around the board, as long as its player is adequate.
