Back in the day...
Do you guys remember the first megathread? By that I mean the first to top 100 posts. I think it was about poltical alignment. Before that the 50 or 60 some-odd threads about historical figures playing diplomacy seemed huge, but not so much now.

Face-to-Face versus Online ?
Has anybody played both 'versions' of the game often enough to comment on the differences in play, i.e. in negotiations?
Do you find people are more likely to stab sitting miles away behind a computer screen?
Does it hinder negotiations to have to write in text without facing your friend/foe eye to eye?

Here's Popular Mechanics take on the conspiracies:
http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/military_law/1227842.html?page=1

And here's another site that gives some pretty good counters
http://www.debunking911.com/WTC7.htm

The thing you gotta do though, is let the evidence from both sides influence you to the extent that they make sense. You approach things like this from the same stand point as a group I've seen you ridicule on this same forum before - creationists. It CAN'T be the case that this happened the way everyone thinks it did, because then you lose some amount of validity for your deeply held belief that the government is evil and out to get us. So every argument in favor of what you WANT to believ is added up, but the arguments against are not subtracted. They are dismissed! You are exactly like the creationists that you despise for their lack of ability to be rational when faced with evidence of eviloution, because it would reduce the validity in their deeply held belief that God Created everything on the planet seperately.

The irony is that you probably think you have more of an open mind because you're willing to believe the conspiracies, than those who dont. Because you always need to bee anti-mainstream. And you think that anyone who is mainstream, by definition is unthinking, but you are wrong.

i dont really go for conspiracy theories as a whole just sometimes things dont add up, they seem a little to convient.@invitus just one question regarding jfk if he got shot from behind and to the right why did his head move backwards!simple physics!
Sicarius (673 D)

you are incorrect.
I let evidence from both sides reach me, because I dont take my evidence from a 'side' if its biased its not evidence. its propaganda.

to be honest, the main reason I think the government did it, is because my friend was at the pentagon. outside. having a smoke.
and the gov lied about it. so I know beyond reasonable doubt that their lying about the pentagon, so why wouldnt they lie about the towers, and shanksville, and the whole goddamm thing?
now I dont expect you all to believe I had a friend outside the pentagon just because I said so, so i try to use other evidence to back up what I believe happened. most of what I found backs up what i already believe. thats why i believe it.
now if theres strong evidence against that, I will change my view.
such evidence has yet to come along
Sicarius (673 D)

and basically, the governments account just doesnt 'add up'
dmwits (283 D)

sicarius, are you saying that if enough people argue that the world is flat (on the internet of all places...) that it must be true?
philcore (317 D(S))

Sic Said: "I dont go to conspiracy sites. If I need information i find facts, not shadowed by either side"

Oh come on - where did you find these "facts"? on the internet, of course, just like I did. And what you found wasn't "facts" they were interpretations of observations. And again, I am a scientist at heart, I could care less what the truth is, I just want to know it. I saw the observations with my own eyes and heard what I thought were the most rational explanations and they meshed with mine so I was cool for about 5 years. Thats'when I started hearing that people didn't believe it and I wondered why. So I researched it - I went to the siites that had more observations and a differing interpretation of what those observations meant. And it really moved me (not in some emotional sence, but in a posinal sense). And I wanted to think about it before even looking at the debunking sites, so I held off for a day. Then I looked at them and time after time, just like creationists, it turned out that they were only giving you the evidence that supported their point of view and hiding the evidence that didn't support it. That's bullshit non-science and that's what the conspiracy people are doing in this case. They want SOOO bad for the government to be evil that they ignore evidence to the contrary and only present the evidence that supports their claim.
philcore (317 D(S))
31 Oct 08 UTC
posinal = positional - I know some of you were looking that up to see what the hell I was talking about ;-)

I just meant that my position had actually shifted to the point of being in doubt of my original belief. This is critical to a searcher of truth - the willingness and ability to be shifted if presented with counter evidence. BUT it's also crucial to be able to evaluate rationally and logically the evidence.

well the governments evil either way.
I think they're behing 9-11, but if I see something that proves to me the contrary, then they're not behind it.

but even if they're not behind it, they lied about it
Sicarius (673 D)
31 Oct 08 UTC
I should point out that I believed the governments story of 9-11 for a few years afterword. I didnt just assume they were behind it from the start.
was a little fishy though

sicarius, are you saying that if enough people argue that the world is flat (on the internet of all places...) that it must be true?

have you not heard of the flat earth society?
dmwits (283 D)
31 Oct 08 UTC
Sicarius: even if everyone else in the world said the earth is flat, if I had reason to believe it is round and no reason to believe otherwise, I would conclude it is round. The flat earth society is a tiny minority of the world's population, in the same way as 9/11 conspiracists are a tiny minority.
Sicarius (673 D)
31 Oct 08 UTC
I dont see what you're getting at

you say you would believe something even if you were the only one to believe it
buuut
you're trying to get me to not believe something BECAUSE not a lot of people believe it? (which isnt necessarily true)
Sicarius (673 D)

More than a third of the American public suspects that federal officials assisted in the 9/11 terrorist attacks or took no action to stop them so the United States could go to war in the Middle East, according to a new Scripps Howard/Ohio University poll.
dmwits (283 D)
31 Oct 08 UTC
No, No, No. I'm saying that you're crazy (along with a third of the american people, in the unlikely event you quote a true statistic) if you believe something that is so patently absurd.
dmwits (283 D)
31 Oct 08 UTC
Put yourself in the position of an american government wanting to go to war in the middle-east. Name the top three ways in which you'd persuade Congress, and your voting public, to support you.

Online Election Game
I'm not a big poster in forums. I usually have just enough time to do my moves before time runs out, so you haven't seen any messages from me here before. I am writing now because I would like to tell you about a new project I have recently put online. Inspired by the presidential elections this year I decided to set up a website about elections and create an online election game.

Downtime
I think we went down for a while, so I added 2 hours onto all the games. I'll post the response to the support ticket when I get it :-(

In a future version it'll detect when there has been downtime and delay processing, so no-one will miss out on turns. For now hope no-one missed out, apologies if you did

What's your favorite country to play and why?
I like Germany, because of the variety of options you have as a player. Obviously its central location can be problematic, but with the right use of diplomacy it can be a very adaptable, flexible country that can benefit from any combination of weak/strong countries around the board, as long as its player is adequate.
