Back in the day...

Do you guys remember the first megathread? By that I mean the first to top 100 posts. I think it was about poltical alignment. Before that the 50 or 60 some-odd threads about historical figures playing diplomacy seemed huge, but not so much now.

yes back in the day...
when i joined having votes about best dip player in history was all the rage, didnt alexander and ghengis khan earn the top two spots? there was also a lot of one line story telling threads. not that many game help/rules threads (but there was a few about old bugs now solved- the sc nc of spain etc issue) i think and only smart jason mutiaccounting threads, nothing much about metagaming i think. then i started a post about politics! that was pre pandora, sicarias (and their detractors) so while it was long it didnt get too nasty.
im sure dangermouse and others could tell us what threads were popular way back in the past.

Sigh. If I had better memory I could tell you guys about the old days... but it's been getting worse and worse with my old age.

But yeah... I do have a terrible memory. I think the first megathread was most likely one of those demographic questions, like how old are you, or where are you from... or actually I think it might have been the almighty topic of "How old are you, where are you from, and how did you discover Diplomacy and this site?", though I may have just imagined that.

Does anyone know where you can find the old updates log? I remember a time when an SC could be captured in Spring and an army could move between Spain and North Africa.

Boy, those were the days when you could build in ANY SC, not just your home centres. You could self dislodge, convoys were a mess, and double coasted territories were disasters. =)

Self-dislodgement was such a powerful weapon along a defensive line! You just had to evict your front unit and find out which territory the enemy didn't block. And yes, it really encouraged stabbing. In my first game I sent a single unit across from Norway through StP into Moscow, build in StP the next phase and suddenly Russia was out of it!

He made a large number (to the point that at the time around half the multi's caught were his) and was a known friend of certain members here. However, since then he got rid of them and set off with a legit account, although I don't know what he's doing now. Last time I spoke to him was in a game with the new account, where he was doing quite well...

Anyway, yes, I used to self-dislodge to get rid of superfluous and cramped units, which could be rebuilt back at the spacious home SCs.

I had no idea you could ever build at foreign, SCs, that's really cool. I wish there was some legitimate variant wherein foreign SCs could produce units, as long as you've held it for like a year or something.

Haha, yeah it made for much shorter games. It's too bad you can't view the history of the really old games... nearly all my games are unviewable!

I remember lots of people complained about the discrepancies between the adjudicator here at phpDip and the official rules. I tried to quell them and convince them to stay by telling them to treat this set of rules as a sort of variant of Diplomacy until we were officially up to date.

Face-to-Face versus Online ?

Has anybody played both 'versions' of the game often enough to comment on the differences in play, i.e. in negotiations?
Do you find people are more likely to stab sitting miles away behind a computer screen?
Does it hinder negotiations to have to write in text without facing your friend/foe eye to eye?

Online Election Game

I'm not a big poster in forums. I usually have just enough time to do my moves before time runs out, so you haven't seen any messages from me here before. I am writing now because I would like to tell you about a new project I have recently put online. Inspired by the presidential elections this year I decided to set up a website about elections and create an online election game.

Downtime

I think we went down for a while, so I added 2 hours onto all the games. I'll post the response to the support ticket when I get it :-(

In a future version it'll detect when there has been downtime and delay processing, so no-one will miss out on turns. For now hope no-one missed out, apologies if you did

What's your favorite country to play and why?

I like Germany, because of the variety of options you have as a player. Obviously its central location can be problematic, but with the right use of diplomacy it can be a very adaptable, flexible country that can benefit from any combination of weak/strong countries around the board, as long as its player is adequate.
