Fair Play?
I have missed a turn, so one of my oppenent's took advantage of that, and captured one of my centers. If that turn was not missed, there would be no chance to capture it.So I asked him to let me take that center back, because I think it fair play. For me, the point is to win by diplomacy not by an opponent's missed turn. Do you think that "Fair Play" has no position in Diplomacy? Am I "too fair" ?

An unrelated question.
This arose from the "How old are you?" thread: If you were born on, say, 4th April at 8pm, in the UK, and then moved to Bejing, would you start saying that your birthday was 5th April, because of the +8 time zone chance making it 4am on the 5th that you were born?

I somehow doubt this is actual metagaming, but I figured I'd post it just cause it's quite strange. Austria and I (and to some extent Italy) agree that something is weird here.

Question re ethics of multiply accounts
See below
Tirpitz (100 D)
23 Oct 08 UTC
A question of multiply accounts ethics has just come up that I did not realize.

I have two accounts on here. Tirpitz and Thermostat. I exclusively use Tirpitz except a few days ago I saw a game I wanted to join but I didn't have enough points to join it because I'm in like a million game with Tirpitz. So I formed Thermostat so I could join and play in the other game.

I have no intention of ever playing the two in the same game and the only reason I made the second account was because I didn't want the game to get full and miss my chance to play in it. I see no ethical problem with that.

I did realize, however, that an ethical issue could arise because I was playing with 200 points instead of 100, giving me more opportunities to further the prospects of one of the names simply because I have two. So while one name may do very well, in the ranking system it wouldn't accurately reflect my skill level.

So I pose the question to the community - if I never play in the same game together is it still unethical to have two names? If the answer is yes, I will finish my game with Thermostat and never play with it again. What say the group and the moderators?

By the way I meant to say multiple* accounts not multiply. Sorry.

The problems are as I see it:
1. If you play a game and do not reveal who you are does it matter what nickname you use?
2. Should you be playing with a history/points that reflects your skill or not?
3. Does an experienced player who plays under a nickname unethical?

mac (189 D)

I see no problem Tirpitz in that and I appreciate your being Frank. The D-Points do not reflect a player's skills, so that is a false problem.

The D-points should - amongst other things - prevent newcomers to join a gazillion games. This is because often newcomers lose interest in the hobby very quickly and leave, leaving a lot of messy CD's behind... So the only thing that you should solemnly swear in front of this community (I am just joking...) is that you will not let any of your current games go into CD.

@ Edi. I see what you mean. My personal opinion in that regards:
1. I suppose is rhetoric question, so no answer needed.
2. While the points almost never reflects a player' skills history does to a greater extent. However the two histories should be - in this case - just be shorter, but still accurate in regards to skills (for as far as history can measure those).
3. I do not believe so, unless he deliberately joins newcomers' games. The D-point system, to a certain extent, obliged to do this at the beginning, but this should be a temporary problem in a player's record.

Unethical, though exposing your accounts is quite ethical.

Points limit which games you can join. Points also limit how many games you can join. Both limits benefit all of us.

I consider it unethical to join too many games. How many is too many? When you confuse the play in one game with that of another, you make mistakes. You're playing too many games. A couple good games are better than a lot of half-hearted attempts.

One other reason: You're no saint. It is too enticing when you've just been stabbed and mocked and have access to a secret account and a CD is waiting and all you'd have to do is . . .

Remove the temptation.

Well... Edi, with regards to number 2...

I play with like all noobs. Maybe that's why I win 40% of the time. But... I like it that way so.... yeah. Maybe that's unethical, maybe it's not.
Centurian (3257 D)

My record isn't as good as it might be if I had made a new account after playing around at first. You should just wait and build up points like a regular player. Managing multiple accounts can get out of control and there is a reason we maintain the points system. If it was designed so you should be able to make new accoutns to play more games at once then there wouldn't be a constraint on how many games you play (through the points).

Everyone else has seemed to be pretty lenient. Except for Edi who has gone on his same old pointless name rant. I say you should cancel the account immediately.
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
24 Oct 08 UTC
Yep I'm afraid so Tirpitz; the points system is supposed to limit the number of games people can play, because left by themselves people tend to play in too many

If your Tirpitz account wins the games its currently playing in it'll get more points, and you can use those to either move up to higher games or join more games of the same level

But if you don't gain any points that'd be a good indicator that you're playing in too many games, and that joining fewer games would probably result in you playing better

Also if a moderator notices a link between the two accounts both accounts could get banned, yanking you out of all the games you're in. The moderator control panel is the code which has developed the most since 0.8, and we now have a team of mods, so having more than one account is riskier than ever (this is more of a message to others thinking of doing the same thing than you specifically of course)

So please don't use your other account to join any other games

Very unethical to open more than one account. I think this is in part a carryover of the way Diplomacy started as an in-person, face to face (FTF) game, whereas on-line it's much more common and normal for people to have multiple accounts, and discard ones the don't like. But here, due to the potential for abuse, having any more than one account is unconscionable.

Conversely, it is now the ethical thing to do to finish out the games you started, and then discontinue one of the accounts.
DeliciousWolf (112 D)
24 Oct 08 UTC
That was badly written. What I'm trying to say is I suspect we get a lot of players who're used to playing multi-accounts in other games where its accepted, and they don't always realize that that is not permissable here, or even why.
Chrispminis (916 D)

What Kestas said. This was actually one of the main reasons the point system was put into place. Before the point system, the only ranking system was a basic one which gave players different titles based on raw wins. This caused many players to play over 40 games at one time! Any game that did not see an immediate success in the first years was dropped and it led to lots of CD's and an overall drop in quality of game. So please choose one of your accounts to play with, and refrain from using the second, which will likely be banned when the games you're playing with are finished.

Thanks for being honest though however, and I hope you will see the games you're currently in through to the end.

I would!

My name is "Maniac" and also "Me mad? Are you insane?" I confess to using two accounts and have never played with myself. (Well I have but I'm saving that confession for my WA meeting on Tuesday)

In my defense/defence I would say that (a) I'm Mad (b) I have a split personality (c) bigger boys made me do it.

I hope I can be forgiven. I am finishing off one account and will continue with the other if that is OK?

I actually, don't think what you're doing is "unethical" per se, but I do agree with others that it's a bad idea, and I'd suggest finishing out that game and dropping the account. It is a temptation, and it could easily lead to a reduction in the quality of play (not an ethics problem really but one I think is worth consideration).
Tirpitz (100 D)
24 Oct 08 UTC
Okay. Thanks for all of the input. I have resolved to finish the one game I'm in as Thermostat and not use the account ever again. As I understand it, there are two big pitfalls to having more than one account:

1) It encourages playing far too many games. The points system was designed to limit playing in too many games and multiple accounts goes around this.

2) There is the chance that you will abuse your multiple accounts and play in the same game with them. This one I see as less of an issue, because masking the same IP address and logon times for both names simply wouldn't be worth the trouble and I wouldn't do it because I think it's unethical. But I do understand that's what they all say so it's better to stay away anyways.

That being said, I will finish the game I started as Thermostat and then abolish the account and play exclusively as Tirpitz.
