I can't take credit for this strategy, but I have seen it, and I have to admit its a winner. There are five simple steps.

Fair Play?
I have missed a turn, so one of my oppenent's took advantage of that, and captured one of my centers. If that turn was not missed, there would be no chance to capture it.So I asked him to let me take that center back, because I think it fair play. For me, the point is to win by diplomacy not by an opponent's missed turn. Do you think that "Fair Play" has no position in Diplomacy? Am I "too fair" ?

An unrelated question.
This arose from the "How old are you?" thread: If you were born on, say, 4th April at 8pm, in the UK, and then moved to Bejing, would you start saying that your birthday was 5th April, because of the +8 time zone chance making it 4am on the 5th that you were born?

Strange moves...
I somehow doubt this is actual metagaming, but I figured I'd post it just cause it's quite strange. Austria and I (and to some extent Italy) agree that something is weird here.

Broken Game(s) What do we do
I took over another country that had not moved in 1901. When I looked closely there were basically 3 countries that hardly moved in 1901. This is what I call a broken game.http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=6300

Rules Question: Mutual support-Holds?
Can I have two adjacent countries Support Hold on each other? For instance, if I were Budapest and Vienna with enemies in Trieste and Galicia, could I have Budapest and Vienna Support Hold each other so that whichever territory is left alone lends its Support to the assailed one?

League website
I have very hastily cobbled together a website to host info. on the league:

be warned: there will be massive , horrible mistakes. Sorry.

there should be an award in honor of Edi.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

Those were just made up on the spot.

Flashman was placed there because he first put forward the idea in May time roughly.

I don't through pure modesty, and knowing what I can and can't get away with.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

btw as the URL implies I hope to be able to have more than just 10 games a year of leagues.
Zarathustra (3672 D)
22 Oct 08 UTC
fair enough. I just think Edi has contributed a lot to Diplomacy and may possibly be a good person to honor, if we were going to honor people. Perhaps it would be better to just name trophies and leagues in some other way

I was thinking, why not make a simple blog?

All the programming is done for you, and we don't care much about design and stuff.

Hell, I'd make it myself tomorrow morning if you guys agree...
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
22 Oct 08 UTC
Frankly, all the programming is already on googlepages too, so ease of setting up doesn't really matter. Its what is going to be best. If people prefer a blog, do a blog.
Xapi (194 D)
22 Oct 08 UTC
Whatever you want, I just think it will be easier to update and read.

BTW: I personally hate blogs, it's just that for this in particular, it may prove useful.
DeliciousWolf (112 D)

I like the how the links take you to the Games being played.
P.S. Don't forget Kestas!
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
22 Oct 08 UTC
Well, there is also the GFDT which should be restarted as an annual event, and I am toying with the idea of having a "Champions' Trophy" Where seven top performing players over the last year battle one another in 2 games.
cgwhite32 (1465 D)
22 Oct 08 UTC
Ghostie! This is fantastic - well done! Our defeats can now be immortalised in history... Or at least mine :(

Anyway, perhaps EOG statements can be added to each league page when the games finish?
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
22 Oct 08 UTC
Of course.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
22 Oct 08 UTC
And btw, can we get a concensus one way or another on how to spell "Ghosty/Ghostie"?

I prefer Ghostie I think.
aoe3rules (949 D)

do you need help with the website?

also, is it supposed to be only one page?
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
22 Oct 08 UTC
If you click through the link "The Php League", you will find all the other pages
Xapi (194 D)
22 Oct 08 UTC
Ghost, I hadn't seen the link, that's why I suggested something else. The page is great.
cgwhite32 (1465 D)
22 Oct 08 UTC
Ghostie, I think it is because of your age I use that spelling - is that terribly patronising? I don't mean it to be :s

It is also more English I think.
Chrispminis (916 D)

aoe3rules (949 D)

that didn't work the first time... oh well. anyway, i'm not in the leagues, so...
mac (189 D)

GhostMaker... I understand you are the manager of the league, aren't you? In this case I am happy to put forward my availability for eventually replacing a player should him/her drop out in the next weeks.
dangermouse (5551 D)

So why does Flashman get the honors for the 2nd trophy?
stratagos (3269 D(S))
23 Oct 08 UTC
My god! There are massive, horrible mistakes on this thing!

(just kidding ;) )
Chrispminis (916 D)
23 Oct 08 UTC
Because TheGhostmaker is modest, and the leagues were apparently Flashman's idea in the first place. I personally don't think we need to name the trophy's after people... but I'm fine either way.
Braveheart (2408 D(S))
23 Oct 08 UTC
I think it's definitely worth immortalising Calhammer and Kestas with the cup names. No one else should be considered worthy yet, unless they win the top league 3 times.... which would be quite some feat!!
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
23 Oct 08 UTC
Well, flashman began the first thread on the idea of the league. Remember that there is the GFDT too.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
23 Oct 08 UTC
Oh, and cg, yes it is terribly patronising, but I think it is because of your age that you use it.

mac, I do manage the league, and I shall place you in a queue mac.
Churchill (2280 D)

Nice work... but can we change "dropped out" to left? From what I can see Blackheath Wanderer went CD... as opposed to an informed decision to leave, as well as finishing both games.
cgwhite32 (1465 D)
23 Oct 08 UTC
My age! I'm barely older than you! :P Keep up the good work. Happy to help out with any text/writing if you like. I'm hopeless with computers, but not a bad wordsmith.
@Churchill
Blackheath Wanderer was banned after a confession of multi-accounting as I understood it.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
23 Oct 08 UTC
He wasn't actually banned, but left under the shame of it/ realisation that if you loose from two positions then there isn't a hope for you.
dangermouse (5551 D)
23 Oct 08 UTC
Note quite - I did actually ban him a few days later since he requested it.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

sceptic_ka (100 D)
23 Oct 08 UTC
nice,
one question though, why bother with 12 points for a win?
Since the only conclusions are "win" or "n-way draw" and a win can be set equivelant to a 1 way draw all the 12 points are doing is scalling the points table.
Unless of course someone is scared of fractions? :-)
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
23 Oct 08 UTC
The point is that it makes the scores all integers.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
23 Oct 08 UTC
in all likelihood...
dangermouse (5551 D)
23 Oct 08 UTC
I was molested by fractions when I was a young lad. Please keep the integers.
Xapi (194 D)
23 Oct 08 UTC
What about a 5-way draw?
Or a 7-way draw?
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
23 Oct 08 UTC
seven way draws and five way draws are very very unlikely. I could multiply by 35, but I doubt many would thank me for it.
sean (3490 D(B))
25 Oct 08 UTC
game one must be finishing soon.
ghost, will you post the point scores in separate group lists or in one long league table? i like the idea of all of us together coz thats how you will decide what league we get into after this qualifying round right?
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
25 Oct 08 UTC
Not quite. We shall have separate tables.

Deciding for leagues next year:

Premier League: Group Winners plus best second place.
League A: Other second placers plus two best third placers
Leagues B1, B2: Other third placers, fourth placers and four best fifth placers
Leagues C1, C2: The other fifth placers, six and seventh placers.

I am considering not allowing Group F players to get though on "best such and such a place" because it was an unseeded league (late arrivals) and in theory of lower standard by quite a way.
