Good CD Turkey to take over

It's Winter 1901, and Turkey still owns all its home centers.

SANDCASTLE to kick down - multi-accounter
I wonder how many accounts THIS time?
ProsperityY!PP and Exponentialdecay are clearly the same person:

1. The Same log-on times
2. exponentialdecay joined the very day after ProsperityY!PP
3. ProsperityY!PP is playing in four out of five of Exponentialdecay's games
4. Very suspicious press indicating same player in M Kahunas 2 game- When I as Russia attacked Turkey, France of all people started threatening me.

It must be said, he is a very skilled tactician, its a shame that he has turned to dishonorable means to win his games.

Kestas, PLEASE KICK DOWN HIS SANDCASTLE !! :)

Retreats before a country is eliminated
Say a player has one unit left. In an autumn turn, the player's last SC is taken and his unit is dislodged. Shouldn't that player have the opportunity to retreat into another SC?

For instance, see this game:
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=5217
Italy was dislodged from Tyrrhenian in Autumn 1904 and could have retreated into Rome but was not given an opportunity to.

Multis
Too bad people feel they have to do this. I wonder how many games are won because of this practice. I just want to enjoy a good game, and it kind of riuns it if you are playing against 2 or 3 opponents that are the same person :(

Two quick questions
1) If all players have finalized their orders except for one who is in CD, does that hold up the completion of the turn until the timer runs out?

2) Has any seen Kestas lately? (heard from, read a post, etc)

I'm sick of Turkey. Useless, useless country.
It's so easy to win as Turkey. It's hardly even fair for the other players. Unless they all kill him in the beginning he has every chance of winning.

I'm tired of never being France or Germany or Austria. Ever. I just want to try them out. =(
DukeAtreides (100 D)

Turkey has the fewest options for an opening of any country in the game! Couple that with being almost assured no allies (Austria prefers Russia, and an alliance with Russia brings a swift beatdown for both players) and you've got a recipe for the (second?) worst country in the game.
Maica (145 D)
22 Sep 08 UTC
No England and Austria are the two worst countries. I would rather be Italy!
Invictus (240 D)
22 Sep 08 UTC
Italy? Italy's easily the worst. Turkey at least has growth potential, but Italy has to become Russia's slave to get anything out of Austria and ends up getting stabbed by France along the way.

And then there're those two to three rounds where all you have is Tunis and the only thing you can do is keep getting bounced back from the Ionian or go on one last adventure to North Africa. Unless you're very lucky Italy's really, really not good.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
22 Sep 08 UTC
I disagree. I find you have a lot of options when playing Italy. In addition, everyone else is usually too busy attacking other people so you usually have enough time to plan a defense/stab.
flashman (2274 D(G))
23 Sep 08 UTC
Yep, quite a few on here have better records with Italy than any other country and certainly better than with Russia.
Braveheart (2408 D(S))
23 Sep 08 UTC
Russia is always a double-edge sword.... no country has a greater influence on the board from the start. But it is a difficult country to play and conversely every other alliance/stab on the board has direct ramifications for the motherland. So if you love the art of diploming then Russia is probably one of the most fun nations to play.

If you like playing safe and secure countries and forming one strong early alliance to see you through most of the game, then you will be in trouble.

Italy - I have had a lot of fun with in some games; but also had others games where I have been largely ignored and have ended up having to potter around waiting for an opportunity to grab a 5th centre.

russia is the weakest mid-game power. the secret to russia is basically a slow expansion until 1904-ish. italy is best played as a defensive/friendly country, and just needs to wait for opportunities to present themselves. an early aggressive italy is hard to win with (not impossible, just hard). england is one of my favorites, because it has the potential to simply grab for centers in most of the early game. with most other countries this would result in a quick backlash/elimination, but if you play it smart with england, you can pull off an early lead without drawing a slew of enemies.
WhiteSammy (132 D)

alamothe its funny you should say that bc you have more wins as turkey than you do with russia

i despise being austria. Austria has the greatest chance of being ganged up on than any other country. They always get the butt-end of alliance, be it between him and russia, or him and turkey, or him and italy. And there is always the chance that germany will go south, rare as it may be.
England is NOT the worst player by far. It is easy for england to make alliances, and any backstabs on his allies' parts would require at least 3 fleets or more, and by that time england can see it coming and prepare himself.

This statement is a lie!

Back on topic, I had the thought that country choices could possibly be weighted to give players a more evenly distributed draw of countries as opposed to the current (albeit truly random) system - It's funny how what our brains think is random really isn't random at all. It could be something like the last 7 drawn countries will be weighted less or keep a complete running tally of all your games. I think with a small enough weight it would be slightly noticeable to the player but shouldn't affect any meta-gaming situations much at all. Besides, as long as each player is getting each country at a 1/7 chance over their entire play history it shouldn't matter for stats and the like.

This could even be weighted higher for beginners so that they don't get stuck with Austria 3 out of their first 7 games (we don't want to scare them all away ;)) - how do you do a smiley inside parenthesis?
Thucydides (864 D(B))
25 Sep 08 UTC
You don't.

Anyway, I apologize for the gripe, I just don't like being Russia because you are next to everyone except France. Now, I love diplomasizing, but not when you're trying to make sure not everyone teams up on you.

Supporting the support?
Hello everybody

on the actual board game instruction manual (50th anniversary edition, p.9) it says: "Support can be offensive (...) or defensive (supporting a hold, support or convoy order)".

However, I could not find any reference on how a "support to support" is done, and what is the mechanism behind it...

Anybody available to help or point me to the right online page/article?

If there is a fleet on the South Coast of Spain and a fleet in Portugal, can the fleet in Portugal move to the North Coast of Spain and the Fleet in Spain move to Portugal without causing a bounce? Thanks for any info you can give on this dilemma.

EOG "Thank God I'm a Straight Man" - Making the Key work
A month or so ago, there was a thread in this forum called "Making the Key work", wich was basically about the Key Lepanto, and asking why, according to the poster, the Key was rarely used, and even rarelier did it actually work.

I was just getting started in the game, but it got me reading on some opening theory, and I have to say I fell in love with the Key almost instantly.

I got Italy in my next game, so I just had to try it. This game came to an end yesterday, and in the next post is my EOG statement.

Could it be possible to have more than 72 hours per phase? Especially for private, i.e. password-protected games, this could be an option. Or what's the reason for this maximum?

Riddle me this?
Ok, if a game cost 101 points to join (presumably to stop total beginners that haven't won a game from joining), then 5 people join and the pre-game starts, how much does it cost to take over a CD Italy or Germany?

According to my calculations, 96 points.

Not sure how or why...

Not being all sooky-gripey-blah-blah. I'm happy to have players join to make up the numbers and not have CD countries. Just curious as to the calculations...

Discussion anyone?
