Current point system
Hi

I've not found anything usefull in the FAQ nor the rules so I post it there : if a Pot of 100 is available and a game is over.
one with 18 (winner)
one with 10
one with 7
one with 1 unit

What will be the actual wins of everyone?

This simple example could or should be placed in the FAQ for people like me that doesn't read the forum each day. Thanks

something about the points system again...
After you have finished a game, the gamemaster always says that either you win or survive, and get a number of points. But do you get back the amount you have bet? Or it is included in the "number of points" you get? Because once I have taken over a CDed game using 1DP and when I finished, I survived with 0 units and it said I get 0 points, but actually, I found out that I got 1DP back somehow. Also, for example, if you enter a 35 pot game (5DP), if you survived and got 10 SC, you will only get 10 points, and if it does mean that it is what you gain totally, subtracting the bet, you only get 5DP more, which is not very logical. Moreover, there are post in the forum about people having strange amount of points...

Slightly Modified Long Long Story
We all know the Long Long Story idea. I thought we might try it with each person contributing a complete sentence. Perhaps we can still have a funny story that is a bit more coherent. (Plus I'm bored at work)
Like the other story comments are parenthetical. (Like so)

KESTAS!!!
please look at the game "alexander". From Spring 1905 to Autumn 1905 there seems to be a discrepancy. Russia moved his army from Sevastopol to Rumania somehow in one move, it says he moved from the Black sea but that is incorrect because there was nobody there... I'm Turkey by the way

Opinions needed on private games
Should they be completely closed to the public, or should they be viewable?

At the moment you can't see any info other than the game's summary, but sometimes people want to view a game being run by others but which is private, eg in tournaments.
Would anyone be against letting everyone see the map in private games, even when they're not a member?

If you have another suggestion it can't include extra game configuration options, I don't want a checkbox saying "Make this private game viewable? [Yes/No]", and it can't include things like having an extra password to view the game.

Another no-press game
Since there was interest expressed in the thread for the last no-press game, I've created another.

URL is http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=2446 and the password is "nopress".

Remember, by joining this game you agree to no communication about the game with any of the other players.

kestas : problem with adjudication ...rocket launcher Spring 1904

I had my French army in Wales moving into London with support from my fleet in the English Channel. A clear 2 on 1 with no way to cut support and no way for England to support London.

It was incorrectly adjudicated as a standoff.

Please fix this.

[Feature Request] -- Improved Communication Functionality
I posted something similar in another thread, but this is a request (suggestions) for improved communication within games. The purpose of this functionality would allow communication similar to what could be accomplished in a face-to-face game of Diplomacy.

Requests (Suggestions):
(1) Allow everyone in the game to know which players sent messages to which other players. Perhaps this could be included in the move history section, or a new tab could be added for communication history. The contents of the messages sent between other players would not be known, but a list of who communicated with who would be displayed. For example, if Russia sent a message to France during the Spring 1904 turn, then the following would be displayed: "Spring 1904: Russia sent a message to France". In a face-to-face version of Diplomacy, normally a player could see who was discussing with who, even if the contents of that discussion was unknown.
(2) Allow for messages to be sent to multiple players at the same time. Perhaps add an "inlcude" tab that allows to select additional players to send a message to. When someone receives a message that was also sent to other players, it could include a comment such as "this message also sent to [xxx]", where [xxx] is the list other countries the message were sent to. This would allow for group discussion that includes some countries and excludes others.

The above should be easy to code, don't change any rules of the game, and allow for interaction similar to a face-to-face game. This is different from the Global Chat feature planned for version 0.8.

Opinions needed on draws
First off; how is the pot split in a draw? Do players each get an equal slice, or do players get a slice depending on how many SCs they have?
If they get an equal slice that would encourage players with more SCs to try and get rid of the smaller players before drawing the game, and make draws more likely to only occur in the event of real stalemates. If they get a slice depending on their SCs that might be considered more fair.

If there was some kind of automated way of voting to draw a game would approval from all players be needed, or would it only need votes from players representing, say, 60% of the supply centers on the board? If it required everyone's vote the larger player might veto the draw vote to try and wait for the other players to get bored with the game and let them win.

If you have other ideas please make sure they're simple and don't require each game to be configured with their own drawing rules
MarekP (12864 D)

The pot should be split equally. All players have to agree with a draw in the same turn.
dangermouse (5551 D)
13 Dec 07 UTC
All players still in the game should receive equal parts regardless of their SD count.

It should definitely be 100% of players for the draw.
mightyrobot (202 D)
13 Dec 07 UTC
I have no opinion on point splits, but strongly feel that 100% of remaining players should agree to a draw. Draws should occur for stalemates, and all minor players should be eliminated before you can call it a stalemate. My two cents.
thewonderllama (100 D)
13 Dec 07 UTC
i agree with marek and dangermouse. equal split and everyone must agree. i think the qualification that they all agree to it in the same turn is also important.
flashman (2274 D(G))
13 Dec 07 UTC
Yep, count me in for the above:

equal split,
all players agree and in same turn...

This should not normally result in more than three remaining players asking for a game to be drawn.
Dant818 (100 D)
13 Dec 07 UTC
equal split and all agree
It's the most fair. Hey that big SC guy is going to get bored too right?
Merano (2046 D)
13 Dec 07 UTC
in general, I also vote for: all players have to agree, equal split

but another thought: what is the minimum number of units that can create a stalemate on the board?

is there a scenario possible, where 2 powers are fighting a 3rd (e.g. turkey), who can hold his position by a stalemate line and refuses a draw?

so it is no real stalemate, because the first two countries could still fight each other, but are maybe refusing to do so - how should this scenario be handled?
MarekP (12864 D)
13 Dec 07 UTC
AFAIK the minimum number of units that can create a stalemate is 16. A three-way draw is possible when one player creates a stalemate position and the other two don't want to take the risk and attack each other.
Merano (2046 D)
13 Dec 07 UTC
did some research; there are stalemates possible with fewer units than 16 units - if certain condition are met

e.g. there is even a 6 unit stalemate possible by turkey against germany/england:

constantinople, armenia, portugal, spain, west med, north africa

this could mean that turkey has 6 units opposed to 28 of england/germany and could refuse a draw

how should this situation be handled?
sean (3490 D(B))
13 Dec 07 UTC
sorry merano, im confused about how could turkey keep cons and armenia from an anglo-german alliance that owns everything else?
you know scarily too much about this game. sorry if this is a silly question
dangermouse (5551 D)
13 Dec 07 UTC
That's an interesting setup Merano! Sean, Turkey can hold those provinces in this case because his opponents can't get any fleets into the Mediterranean. Turkeys two units in Con and Armenia protect his 3 home SD and the 4 units in Spain/N. Africa area protect the entrance to the Med.

However, why wouldn't Turkey agree to a draw in this situation, he'll get 1/3 of the pot instead of 6/35. Even if he convinced the opponents to fight eachother he would need to gain an addition 5-6 SD to make it pay off before the game ended.
sean (3490 D(B))
13 Dec 07 UTC
ah ic. an interesting conundrum. thanks dm
Merano (2046 D)
13 Dec 07 UTC
@dangermouse: this was just an example that a country holding a minority of SCs could refuse the draw; there are similar stalemates with almost any number of units possible;

what if one country is holding 12/34 SCs but refusing the draw, because 12/34 is slighly greater than 1/3rd.

my question was: what if a situation is in fact a draw, but one player refuses to agree to the draw for whatever reason?

- should the new rules state, that the other countries have to call for an admin/moderator, who can set the game to a draw manually?
- should the new rules state, that they have to continue playing?
- should the new rules state, that 60%/70%/80%/whatever of the SCs is enough to force a draw
- should the new rules allow to circumvent the "split equally" rule somehow?
MarekP (12864 D)
13 Dec 07 UTC
I vote for the first option in such case -- judge/admin/moderator.
mightyrobot (202 D)
13 Dec 07 UTC
I personally feel a draw should only occur if there really is a stalemate condition. If all the players left in the game do not move for two turns, couldn't that be used to trigger a draw automatically?
thewonderllama (100 D)
14 Dec 07 UTC
draws exist in the rules as a voluntary thing where all parties share equally in the victory...i'd say they should be implemented accordingly as opposed to be imposed.
Wooble (450 D)
14 Dec 07 UTC
I think a draw should occur only if all players agree to it. Getting an admin/moderator to draw a game against the consent of one of the players would just be ridiculous; this is Diplomacy. Use your diplomatic skills to convince the other players to accept the draw.
dangermouse (5551 D)
14 Dec 07 UTC
If the game is completely stalemated with no chance for one player to win and one party refuses to draw then I would leave it up the site admin's discretion. Even then I would say that a full year to pass with no movement before any type of forced draw.

All other situations should require that every player agree to the draw.
Locke (1846 D)
14 Dec 07 UTC
I think that all players should agree, but i would argue for a weighted split. The player with the most units gets the most points and the player with the least units gets the least points.

This will stop a coalition of weaker players stopping a winning player by scrambling to the stalemate line and then getting alot more points than they would have done.
thewonderllama (100 D)
14 Dec 07 UTC
doing weighted splits would lead to people throwing the game to get more points though. say you have a player with 17 scs being held back by two players with 9 scs each. if the two weaker players stay true to the spirit of the game and do their best to win and not let someone else win if they can't, they should maintain an alliance and force a draw. however, if weighted splits were used for draws, then it would be more worthwhile to one of the weaker players to break the alliance and make a grab for as many scs as he could quickly get from his ally before the stronger player wins.

also on ideological grounds, i'd say if the stronger player wanted to get more points, they should be using those diplomacy skills to get someone to break the coalition. a draw is agreeing that you can't/won't/don't care to try to win outright and all parties involved should have an equal share in it, otherwise it's just deciding to call something less than 18 sc's winning.
MarekP (12864 D)
14 Dec 07 UTC
I believe the splits must be even -- that's why it is a draw after all. Uneven splits would mean that someone wins under the point system.
Chrispminis (916 D)
14 Dec 07 UTC
My vote:
Even split
Complete Consensus

I'm not sure how to deal with Merano's hypothetical situation. Technically, it should be allowed to continue, as the refusing country should have the opportunity to try and convince the other players to fight amongst themselves. But I can see where a match of wills and stubbornness might arise, but I suppose we should let it continue to it's conclusion...
amathur2k (100 D)

we can try like chess
if within the last six moves the board configuration reaches the same state thrice its a draw.
If any single player does not gain or lose any new units in 9 consecutive moves its a draw.
We could play with the numbers, but you get the idea.
amathur2k (100 D)

Ok maybe 6.
This will also solve the problem of sportsmanship since now even a losing player has something to play for i.e. a draw.

Poor sportsmanship?
So in one of my games one of the losing players has been intentionally slowing down the game for the past few years. They only log in once every couple of days to avoid going into CD and when they do log in they do not finalize their orders.

I asked him about it, here is a piece of the conversation:
11:22 PM Are you slowing down the game on purpose?
01:21 PM This is my previlege. It's all I have left :P

Aside from poor spelling, does everyone agree with me that this is in bad taste? Or am I in the minority?

I could maybe understand if I had viciously backstabbed the player and this was his only way to retaliate, but that is not the case here.

how to make diplomacy more popular?
- i mention it on my blog
- in other game sites where i play i mention dip
- to friends
- call your local radio/tv/newspaper and tell them you want an article of diplomacy or you stop promoting them.
- run naked to your local "plaza" with a dip board in your hands
- threaten family and friends to gather 6 more players...or else
- if you are a religious person tell everybody that god plays dip...and is somewhere written in leviticus
- say "please please please...somebody play diplomacy with me"!

Request: Payout points based on number of SCs instead of units
Currently, the victory condition is based on supply centers (SCs), but the points paid out are based on the number of units.

This way, it is possible that the 2nd place gets more points than the 1st place. (e.g. when the sum of conquered SCs + disbanded units is greater than the number of unoccupied SC in the last year of play)

Please calculate points based on the number of supply centers.
