Retreat at Game #1
At Game #1 I must retreat from Spain, and I could do it to WestMed, but the web-form don't show me that option.

What can I do?

Current point system
Hi

I've not found anything usefull in the FAQ nor the rules so I post it there : if a Pot of 100 is available and a game is over.
one with 18 (winner)
one with 10
one with 7
one with 1 unit

What will be the actual wins of everyone?

This simple example could or should be placed in the FAQ for people like me that doesn't read the forum each day. Thanks

something about the points system again...
After you have finished a game, the gamemaster always says that either you win or survive, and get a number of points. But do you get back the amount you have bet? Or it is included in the "number of points" you get? Because once I have taken over a CDed game using 1DP and when I finished, I survived with 0 units and it said I get 0 points, but actually, I found out that I got 1DP back somehow. Also, for example, if you enter a 35 pot game (5DP), if you survived and got 10 SC, you will only get 10 points, and if it does mean that it is what you gain totally, subtracting the bet, you only get 5DP more, which is not very logical. Moreover, there are post in the forum about people having strange amount of points...

Slightly Modified Long Long Story
We all know the Long Long Story idea. I thought we might try it with each person contributing a complete sentence. Perhaps we can still have a funny story that is a bit more coherent. (Plus I'm bored at work)
Like the other story comments are parenthetical. (Like so)

KESTAS!!!
please look at the game "alexander". From Spring 1905 to Autumn 1905 there seems to be a discrepancy. Russia moved his army from Sevastopol to Rumania somehow in one move, it says he moved from the Black sea but that is incorrect because there was nobody there... I'm Turkey by the way

Opinions needed on private games
Should they be completely closed to the public, or should they be viewable?

At the moment you can't see any info other than the game's summary, but sometimes people want to view a game being run by others but which is private, eg in tournaments.
Would anyone be against letting everyone see the map in private games, even when they're not a member?

If you have another suggestion it can't include extra game configuration options, I don't want a checkbox saying "Make this private game viewable? [Yes/No]", and it can't include things like having an extra password to view the game.

Another no-press game
Since there was interest expressed in the thread for the last no-press game, I've created another.

URL is http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=2446 and the password is "nopress".

Remember, by joining this game you agree to no communication about the game with any of the other players.

kestas : problem with adjudication ...rocket launcher Spring 1904

I had my French army in Wales moving into London with support from my fleet in the English Channel. A clear 2 on 1 with no way to cut support and no way for England to support London.

It was incorrectly adjudicated as a standoff.

Please fix this.

[Feature Request] -- Improved Communication Functionality
I posted something similar in another thread, but this is a request (suggestions) for improved communication within games. The purpose of this functionality would allow communication similar to what could be accomplished in a face-to-face game of Diplomacy.

Requests (Suggestions):
(1) Allow everyone in the game to know which players sent messages to which other players. Perhaps this could be included in the move history section, or a new tab could be added for communication history. The contents of the messages sent between other players would not be known, but a list of who communicated with who would be displayed. For example, if Russia sent a message to France during the Spring 1904 turn, then the following would be displayed: "Spring 1904: Russia sent a message to France". In a face-to-face version of Diplomacy, normally a player could see who was discussing with who, even if the contents of that discussion was unknown.
(2) Allow for messages to be sent to multiple players at the same time. Perhaps add an "inlcude" tab that allows to select additional players to send a message to. When someone receives a message that was also sent to other players, it could include a comment such as "this message also sent to [xxx]", where [xxx] is the list other countries the message were sent to. This would allow for group discussion that includes some countries and excludes others.

The above should be easy to code, don't change any rules of the game, and allow for interaction similar to a face-to-face game. This is different from the Global Chat feature planned for version 0.8.

When did Russia annex Finland?
Just a quick query, but I think that Finland should be starting as a bright and troubling orange. Makes no difference, I know, but..

Apologies if this has already been pointed out.

GO and diplomacy for me
2 months of diplomacy and im still hooked with this boardgame. I cant believe this game is not so popular as it SHOULD be.

Of course, diplomacy is not at the same level of GO but i have to admit that phpdiplomacy is my main page and during the day some dip game enter my mind.

this is a great game. His inventor had a flash of light shine upon him when he made this game.

Opinions needed on draws
First off; how is the pot split in a draw? Do players each get an equal slice, or do players get a slice depending on how many SCs they have?
If they get an equal slice that would encourage players with more SCs to try and get rid of the smaller players before drawing the game, and make draws more likely to only occur in the event of real stalemates. If they get a slice depending on their SCs that might be considered more fair.

If there was some kind of automated way of voting to draw a game would approval from all players be needed, or would it only need votes from players representing, say, 60% of the supply centers on the board? If it required everyone's vote the larger player might veto the draw vote to try and wait for the other players to get bored with the game and let them win.

If you have other ideas please make sure they're simple and don't require each game to be configured with their own drawing rules

Poor sportsmanship?
So in one of my games one of the losing players has been intentionally slowing down the game for the past few years. They only log in once every couple of days to avoid going into CD and when they do log in they do not finalize their orders.

I asked him about it, here is a piece of the conversation:
11:22 PM Are you slowing down the game on purpose?
01:21 PM This is my previlege. It's all I have left :P

Aside from poor spelling, does everyone agree with me that this is in bad taste? Or am I in the minority?

I could maybe understand if I had viciously backstabbed the player and this was his only way to retaliate, but that is not the case here.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
13 Dec 07 UTC
If that is genuinely what they mean, then yes it is bad sportsmanship in my view as well. However, we must be fair, they might be using that as a way of delaying things long enough to try and buy support from other players. Very unlikely in the situation you describe, but possible...
TOgilvie (845 D)

I used this tactic, once, in a mocking, joking sense. "What, you won't ally with me? Right, I'm not finalizing!"
But to use it consistently as a weapon is just poor form.

And not being able to spell is unforgivable. If I had my way such illiterates wouldn't even have the vote.
Noodlebug (1812 D)

Bad sportsmanship sucks, but unfortunately you can't really legislate against it. And one way or another, bad sportsmanship will lead to repercussions - it may be considered metagaming to "blacklist" someone but if they deserve it, I have no problem with metagaming in that sense.
james3838 (184 D)
13 Dec 07 UTC
I admit I have used this tactic myself, though it was in the hope of getting a break where someone didn't finalize. I have seen this used effectively against me as well (hey we all forget orders once in awhile). While it can drive you nuts, every turn is 24 hours so if you didn't agree up front (such as fast player game), I would view it as part of the game.
Karkand (2167 D)

This is terrible sportsmanship, name and shame!!
dangermouse (5551 D)
13 Dec 07 UTC
Good point Fig, I could understand that as a reason to. However at this point the player has one unit and no SD. He'll be eliminated as soon as he finalizes Autumn moves and then disbands in the build phase.
mightyrobot (202 D)
13 Dec 07 UTC
I don't use this tactic myself, but I have no problem with it. Everyone has 24 hours to use as they see fit. Some diplomactic methods are rude or annoying, but that is all part of the game.

If it spoils the game for the other players whilst giving the guilty party no hope of advancement/improvement, I'd say it is unacceptable.

Please name and shame (unless it's me)...

While we are at it, can't we introduce a penalty point system for those who allow games to slide into CD status whilst playing and even starting other ones? There is no excuse for this...

As long as someone has the slightest hope of survival, he can and should use his time as he wishes.
In situations where there is no hope whatsoever (I mean technically), it is very bad sport not to finalize fast.
In a recent game I was doing lots of diplomacy with one unit trying to survive. As soon as I was dislodged from my last center in a fall, I disbanded, finalized, and congratulated to players still in the game. I could have dragged out the retreat and the build phase, but why would I? The show must go on, let it go.

I could agree to reduced points for someone who abandonded the game completely, leaving their empire in CD. That would encourage people to complete games they started.

@ El_Perro_Artero: i'm pretty sure TOgilvie's comment about spelling was tongue-in-cheek and besides, the spelling error was made by the other party (c.f. "previlege")
gjonss (95 D)
14 Dec 07 UTC
I don't see any problem with this. The rules are clear: every player has 24 hours to finalize their orders. Case closed in my opinion. On another note, I do think that players who let their countries slip into CD should be penalized with the removal of points. This is, in my opinion, poor sportsmanship, abandoning a game just because you are losing.
Locke (1846 D)
14 Dec 07 UTC
I must agree with gjonss, players DO have 24 hours to make there moves and i believe they are entitled to use the entire 24 hours if they wish.

On the other hand people who delay merely to annoy others are just petty and, frankly, should be ashamed of themselves for being so pathetic.
Chrispminis (916 D)
14 Dec 07 UTC
While it is poor sportsmanship to intentionally hold up a game just to spite the other players, it is not because they are holding up the game, it is because they are doing it just to spite the other players. Taking the full 24 hours is not inherently poor sportsmanship, and should never be punished. If I had my way, I would have a mandatory 24 hours, because I think some people are too hasty in their decisions. These are still the fastest moving games of Diplomacy I've ever played, disregarding a hardcore face to face Diplomacy night.
dangermouse (5551 D)
14 Dec 07 UTC
What Chris said.
that really is being a poor sport. grow up who ever you are you can't win the all unless your Rait then maybe he could.;) hahaha

we, almost all players of this game - El_Perro_Artero, Keyseir & me - have agreed on a draw. italy, who is still alive, should not be part of this draw. points should be split between germany, austria & england. italy is only holding 2 SCs and is irrelevant. please fulfill our request dear admin

how to make diplomacy more popular?
- i mention it on my blog
- in other game sites where i play i mention dip
- to friends
- call your local radio/tv/newspaper and tell them you want an article of diplomacy or you stop promoting them.
- run naked to your local "plaza" with a dip board in your hands
- threaten family and friends to gather 6 more players...or else
- if you are a religious person tell everybody that god plays dip...and is somewhere written in leviticus
- say "please please please...somebody play diplomacy with me"!

Request: Payout points based on number of SCs instead of units
Currently, the victory condition is based on supply centers (SCs), but the points paid out are based on the number of units.

This way, it is possible that the 2nd place gets more points than the 1st place. (e.g. when the sum of conquered SCs + disbanded units is greater than the number of unoccupied SC in the last year of play)

Please calculate points based on the number of supply centers.

Whenever I click on the link to "Implosion" (gid=2306) all that comes up is a blank screen. I don't know why this is happening; it isn't a problem in any of my other games.
