convoys and retreats
Quick question on this implementation of Diplomacy.
I remember a fleet that is forced to retreat cannot convoy an army anywhere. So, convoy orders get nullified in case the would-be convoying fleet has to retreat.
Is this rule implemented this way in phpDiplomacy?

Tournament Question
Kestas is there any way the winners of the Diplomacy tournament be awarded points for the position they finish in the tournament. Lets say 2000 points to the winner and 1000 points for second place etc. If those point values are too high I understand, but if something like that is possible, I think it would make the tournament much more worth while.

RTC - Everything you will ever want to know.
It seems that most people understand what is going on with the "rtc" accounts. But, there are skeptics out there, and I can't blame people for feeling like something shady is going on. Here is everything a person would ever need to know.

1.) I am Doyle McClellan, director of the Information Technology program at Rolla Technical Center. I first played Diplomacy in the 1980s and have long seen the benefits of incorporating it into the program.

2.) This is for the Negotiation Strategies & Techniques segment of the IT program. It is taught because information technology professionals often find themselves thrown into the middle of organizational rivalries where they must find a way to survive and become productive.

3.) We use the book, "The Mind and Heart of the Negotiator" for a text. The game makes a great companion to the coursework. It gives us plenty of common experiences to draw from. For example, I can tell people about "linkage effects" (the effects that one negotiated agreement can have on future negotiations). But, it means a lot more when we can discuss how Player-A was treated by Player-B after what he did in the last game.

4.) We have used multiple copies of the board game for years. This year, there are most students than normal, and they come at different times of day. The result is that we have to constantly reset the board, and it takes too much time. For the last few weeks, we have experimented with various computer-based solutions. But, we use both Windows and Linux machines, meaning it is easier to use a Web-based solution. Jdip didn't seem to do the trick, and I was very pleased to stumble across this site.

5.) While the department has both high school and adult students, all of these participants are in High School, 10th to 12th grades. As a result, I am bound to protect their privacy. That is one of the reasons for the "rtc..." naming convention. The other reason is to minimize confusion and make it easier for people to avoid the students if they desire. That is also why the "official" class games are locked. I didn't want anybody to accidentally stumble into one of our games and for the class to gang up for fun. I also didn't want to allow outsiders to participate in the games and potentially introduce inappropriate topics.

6.) I wouldn't be surprised to learn that several students become avid Diplomacy players. Some clearly have already. Hopefully, you will welcome the new blood into the community.

7.) I can't guarantee nobody will do anything bad. In any group of 30 new users, there will potentially be a percentage that don't respect the other members of the community. We discuss this in class, and I hope they all choose to act appropriately (those "linkage effects" again).

8.) Somebody made a suggestion that I should discuss the benefits of using Diplomacy in the negotiation class. The game is very helpful, as long as it is tied to curriculum that makes connections to what people experience. I actually prefer the board game, because it encourages far more discussion, body language, etc. But, the computer version is much easier to use (nobody messes with the board). Also, people don't take it as personally when we use the computer. In previous years, using the boards, some people in each class have taken things far to personally, and it has affected relationships.

9.) Several extra accounts were created. When people first signed up, they didn't realize how the point system worked. As a result, several accidentally set up high point value games and used up all of their points before we started the official games. Also, a number of extra games were created. This was caused when people jumped into the wrong games and then displaced others were supposed to be in them. Chalk it up as over-zealousness, combined with ignorance (a bad combination anywhere). In the end, it all worked out.

10.) Please, don't spam me. I am easy enough to find on the Web. If you are skeptical about the story, it is easy enough to check me and the program out.

Thanks,
Doyle

Greetings to everybody. Sorry for my english.
Problem : when someone is famous ( top 10 players for example), he/she will have in almost every game one ( or more ) opponent who will try to nail its hide on the wall, if only to be able to say : " I killed Jesse James, so I'm someone too. "
How do you cope with this ?
On some diplomacy sites, you can play 'gunboat' style games, which means, names are unknown. You can of course recognize someone by his writing, the use of some typical words, you have to guess.
I wouldn't dare to ask that this feature be implemented, I would rather know if there are 'psychological' tricks to avoid being in the line of sight of people looking out for trophies.

All of the RTC accounts
This is a negotiation class, and all are playing against each other. This isn't some kind of hack or cheat. It is a whole lot of people learning about the game and playing against each other. The "rtc" designation in games and usernames is made to prevent confusion.

i dont care if you want to play with yourself in private game to boost your self esteme. But just never play with yourself in public. besides if your like "(RTC) Lt. Crackers's" you will have a ton of games won and a shitload of points... but you wont know the first thing about the game. Cheating will get you disliked by all. and the points will be like an empty wall you can hang your trophys on there but you cant show them off. While I am ranting I just want to say sorry to those that i piss off with my negotiation tatics. I say some stupid stuff but I like the rush and I hope you do too. Eric

General Question
I just attempted to convoy an army from London to Belgium through the North Sea. I also attempted to support this move with my fleet in Holland. So I set the support order to support a move into Belgium and then noticed that I was only allowed to support a move from the North Sea (not from London). I assumed that, since the fleet in the North Sea is "giving its move" to the army that it is convoying, that this was the most logical order of the choices given. However the move failed because of a bounce and I also found this message: "Your fleet at Holland's move support wasn't accepted by the unit which support was being given to."

How do I support an army that is being convoyed?

Finalizing Orders
What is the difference between Finalizing an order and updating it? If i just leave it updated to where i want to move, do i have to finalize it so it can be accepted? Or do i have to finalize the orders to make it happen? In other words, Can i not finalize my orders so that nobody knows i already made them but still make them by using update instead of finalize?

5 things you can do with your diplomacy board
i will LOVE to buy a diplomacy board but as much i would love to have one, it is just not practical. Right now i have difficulty to find a single go player in my community, imagine how difficult it will be to gather 7 diplomacy players!!

So, christmas is coming soon and i know the christians will like to give me a present to this humble atheist. If by any chance i get a diplomacy board, what kind of use i can give to it?
here is my top 5 things i can do with a diplomacy board;

5. for cutting vegetables.
4. as a living room decorative
3. to teach geography to my kids
2. to throw at the neighbor's dog who always take a dump at my front lawn.
...and the number use for a diplomacy board is...

1. to rub agaisnt my naked body in a sensual paraphilic way.

what is your top 5 useswith a diplomacy board?

A "Some Pretty Wierd Stuff" Thread...
Hello all-

I am a little bored, and I have decided to start a thread about some unusual things in the diplomacy world. For example, where is the most unusual place that you have seen a unit of a particular country? (i.e.- English army in Smyrna, or Turkish fleet in St. Petersburg) If you dont like that, tell me if you have ever seen such a foolish move by a desperate country, that you had to chuckle to yourself about it. (You have 12 units, he has 2, and he still tries to go against you). If you dont like either of those, throw me a bone and tell me something!!! Geez... Happy thinking!

Attention players of tournament Game #3 (GFTD3)!
Please Gerrbil contact me: write to [email protected] or in the chat of a game in which we are together (i.e. Weak Sauce).
All other players had already got in touch with me.

Tomorrow (Monday) morning I will create the game and write to all players to give them link and password.

Please reserves not involved in other games of the Tournament write to [email protected] to let your e-mail, just in case Gerrbil shouldn't contact me tomorrow.

Thank you
