convoys and retreats
Quick question on this implementation of Diplomacy.
I remember a fleet that is forced to retreat cannot convoy an army anywhere. So, convoy orders get nullified in case the would-be convoying fleet has to retreat.
Is this rule implemented this way in phpDiplomacy?

Tournament Question
Kestas is there any way the winners of the Diplomacy tournament be awarded points for the position they finish in the tournament. Lets say 2000 points to the winner and 1000 points for second place etc. If those point values are too high I understand, but if something like that is possible, I think it would make the tournament much more worth while.

RTC - Everything you will ever want to know.
It seems that most people understand what is going on with the "rtc" accounts. But, there are skeptics out there, and I can't blame people for feeling like something shady is going on. Here is everything a person would ever need to know.

1.) I am Doyle McClellan, director of the Information Technology program at Rolla Technical Center. I first played Diplomacy in the 1980s and have long seen the benefits of incorporating it into the program.

2.) This is for the Negotiation Strategies & Techniques segment of the IT program. It is taught because information technology professionals often find themselves thrown into the middle of organizational rivalries where they must find a way to survive and become productive.

3.) We use the book, "The Mind and Heart of the Negotiator" for a text. The game makes a great companion to the coursework. It gives us plenty of common experiences to draw from. For example, I can tell people about "linkage effects" (the effects that one negotiated agreement can have on future negotiations). But, it means a lot more when we can discuss how Player-A was treated by Player-B after what he did in the last game.

4.) We have used multiple copies of the board game for years. This year, there are most students than normal, and they come at different times of day. The result is that we have to constantly reset the board, and it takes too much time. For the last few weeks, we have experimented with various computer-based solutions. But, we use both Windows and Linux machines, meaning it is easier to use a Web-based solution. Jdip didn't seem to do the trick, and I was very pleased to stumble across this site.

5.) While the department has both high school and adult students, all of these participants are in High School, 10th to 12th grades. As a result, I am bound to protect their privacy. That is one of the reasons for the "rtc..." naming convention. The other reason is to minimize confusion and make it easier for people to avoid the students if they desire. That is also why the "official" class games are locked. I didn't want anybody to accidentally stumble into one of our games and for the class to gang up for fun. I also didn't want to allow outsiders to participate in the games and potentially introduce inappropriate topics.

6.) I wouldn't be surprised to learn that several students become avid Diplomacy players. Some clearly have already. Hopefully, you will welcome the new blood into the community.

7.) I can't guarantee nobody will do anything bad. In any group of 30 new users, there will potentially be a percentage that don't respect the other members of the community. We discuss this in class, and I hope they all choose to act appropriately (those "linkage effects" again).

8.) Somebody made a suggestion that I should discuss the benefits of using Diplomacy in the negotiation class. The game is very helpful, as long as it is tied to curriculum that makes connections to what people experience. I actually prefer the board game, because it encourages far more discussion, body language, etc. But, the computer version is much easier to use (nobody messes with the board). Also, people don't take it as personally when we use the computer. In previous years, using the boards, some people in each class have taken things far to personally, and it has affected relationships.

9.) Several extra accounts were created. When people first signed up, they didn't realize how the point system worked. As a result, several accidentally set up high point value games and used up all of their points before we started the official games. Also, a number of extra games were created. This was caused when people jumped into the wrong games and then displaced others were supposed to be in them. Chalk it up as over-zealousness, combined with ignorance (a bad combination anywhere). In the end, it all worked out.

10.) Please, don't spam me. I am easy enough to find on the Web. If you are skeptical about the story, it is easy enough to check me and the program out.

Thanks,
Doyle

Greetings to everybody. Sorry for my english.
Problem : when someone is famous ( top 10 players for example), he/she will have in almost every game one ( or more ) opponent who will try to nail its hide on the wall, if only to be able to say : " I killed Jesse James, so I'm someone too. "
How do you cope with this ?
On some diplomacy sites, you can play 'gunboat' style games, which means, names are unknown. You can of course recognize someone by his writing, the use of some typical words, you have to guess.
I wouldn't dare to ask that this feature be implemented, I would rather know if there are 'psychological' tricks to avoid being in the line of sight of people looking out for trophies.

Also, given that Splingy has never played any of these people, or indeed anybody with a name beginning in R, it's probably best not to leap to conclusions. You may end up leaping, as here, into a big brick wall of 'being-wrong'.

I think this is sort of an interesting way to teach negotiations to be honest, and it generates interest for this little site. Soon the tracking system for multi-users will be a little better than all of us getting suspicious and informing kestas. If you have a problem with it, petition someone to get you out of the game, or don't join a game that they have started.

and to finish off, i'm sure kestas will understand as well, considering he has mentioned on multiple occasions that he is a student as well. And if you're a college student, you're always striving to find a class that makes the subject matter fun to learn.
Evilduck (322 D)

Brilliant! At my college there are classes that can be started by students, I shall have to look into starting one for Diplomacy.

There should be stickied announcements for these sort of things, so everyone knows that those students aren't multi accounts.

What the...? Does alamothe read the thread before posting? These allegedly aren't multiaccounts, they are separate people. Now the morality of having them play in games other than exclusively with each other, but don't ban them for the sake of it!

Not to mention the fact that alamothe has never played with any of these accounts, benton1 included, as thus has no cause for complain. Neither do I, but there does happen to be a Rolla Technical College in Missouri. I believe in the presumption of innocence, and do not find the argument against sufficient evidence. Now, if I could cross-reference the IP address to put it in Missouri, that would help.
Evilduck (322 D)
13 Nov 07 UTC
After further examination I have to side with alamonthe, these are probably multi accounts of one person.

Notice that there are also six accounts with the name benton. In all their games they just lose to (RTC) Lt. Crackers. This person claims that he made the benton account separately so he could play people not in his class, in that case why are there six of them?
Chrispminis (916 D)

I'm sorry, but as a practicing skeptic, I'm going to have to call shenanigans on this carnival game (South Park reference anyone?).

The fact that they have a large range of ages in one class is ridiculous to believe. I'm also interested in the fact that their "teacher" has randomly come upon this site, and set his students up, without having any established account here prior. I would have at least played a few games, and earned some name for myself before I send my multi age grouped class to play the game.

I suggest that the IP's be logged and we should find out which "legitimate" account is attached as well, since it is probably a normal player at this site, trying their hand at some multi accounting.
rtcpmuser13 (100 D)
14 Nov 07 UTC
the rtc am/pm use # account are legitimate. benton and (RTC) Lt. Crackers are multi accounts. he is most definitely abusing by creating multiple accounts. please do not ban the rtc pm/am user # but feel free to ban any other rtc's or any of bentons. large range of ages?, we are all jr's or seniors, but mental ages? yes that age varies greatly among us

Guys, guys... When he said so-and-so was 3 and so-and-so is 14, he's not referring to the ages, he is listing the numbers they have at the end of the usernames. I'd have to say this is legitimate.

Have a look at http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=2169.
1. 4 people, including piyade, are playing in a game against 3 of the supposedly legitimate rtc players.
2. I love the thought of a creative teacher using Diplomacy as a pedagogical tool, but if there are 15 students, why not buy the board game and start a couple of live games? 1 person would have wait until benton drops out of school, which won't be too long, and can then assume his nation.
3. If the teacher prefers they play on line, why not let them play one another only, or only one in a game with others, rather than ganging up on unsuspecting remote users.
4. "so if you don't believe us you can stick it up your ass" - LMAO - rtcpmuser6, aka benton1, you obviously weren't playing attention during the first lesson of the negotiation class, about how to bring people onto your side!
5. I think these accounts should be frozen, at least until the teacher, rtcgeneric1, comes on the Forum and assures the community that s/he will monitor the students' use (how else to ensure they are learning?!), and ensure they are not multi-accounting or colluding.

This ain't no witch hunt.

Busting makes me feel good.

Physics (231 D)
14 Nov 07 UTC
I believe that the term "innocent until proven guilty" has a purpose. The only evidence is their usernames. There's nothing wrong with skepticism, but calling them retarded is uncalled for and not helpful. I, personally believe they are multis, but I'm not condemning them because I have no evidence. By all means, check their IP addresses, but don't jump to conclusions. After that, we can pat ourselves in the back for acting reasonably. I believe it's worth the time to check it out before we freeze them.
you know what, i did multi account with benton1 -6 and its not hurting anyone, unless you are benton 1 -6 im multi accounting and getting a high score not for the ranking but so i can play more games with my class mates. i had 0 points because we create a lot of games and i join all of them, i didn't understand the point system until i had 20 points and i couldnt join any other game my teacher or my friends made. You there is you multi account you bitching about but the RTC accounts aren't really multi accounts, just multiple account in the same class room with a lot of people. Some of the people in the class like me play this game more than just in class but if you LOOK you can see some people are only on for an hour or two because there is a 3 hour class with Linux OS, Networking Administration and then is negotiations class. So go ahead and log our IP's because they will come form our school districts network. And also another note, wile im multi accounting with 7 accounts, its a lot of freaking work flipping between all those accounts so how do you suppose im going this with about 18 accounts within 3 hours and periodically get on random accounts and play a few other games. And Also if i was multi account (with the RTC accounts) then WHY THE FUCK WOULDN'T I WANT TRY TO WIN AS FAST AS POSSIBLE AND RAISE THE ALL MIGHTY FUCKING RANKING.... and if you still don't believe me.... piss on your self and go write a poem.
there is your multi***^^^^^^^^

hahah there are like hundred of those RTC accounts, it must be really hard. but there is RTC in usernames "to prevent confusion" so he won't accidently negotiate with himself. btw, we're probably looking at the future king of php diplomacy, he'll beat Rait in seven days i think
Lynius (100 D)
14 Nov 07 UTC
Can you explain why there are games involving both rtc accounts and other people?
ya i can, its because some other people, (like me) want to explore game and people that are not in our class, people in our class are all new to diplomacy, some of the people that are better at this game want a more challenging game with other people. And also, our teacher was looking for a free place online to play diplomacy so we can play the game faster, and we do have 3 or 4 diplomacy game boards. Another thing is that yes (RTC) Lt. Crackers and rtcpmuser6 are the same person, it might be considered multi accounting but (RTC Lt. Crackers was created before the rtcpmuser# account because our teacher needs our user accounts and password in case we miss a day of class so he can finalize and make multiple moves in one day.
any other questions and sorry for any spelling or grammar errors, I'm writing the in behalf of Negotiations class not English Class
EricHerboso (836 D)
14 Nov 07 UTC
You guys are getting worked up over nothing. What's wrong with letting them play as they will?

Multi-accounting is cheating in the same game, but this isn't multi-accounting. Just because they know other players in real life isn't illegal so long as they don't allow that to severely influence who they're willing to ally with.

I personally know a couple of other users on here in real life from my old college, but that never stopped me from playing games with them on here. If anything, I've tended to be more likely to stab them simply because I know them well enough not to trust them.

I think the fact that their class is playing diplomacy isgreat, and should be pointed to as one of the great things about this site. Not complained about like they're doing something wrong. Phpdiplomacy was built on the premise of creating an easy interface for diplomacy games, and students like these are the prime targets for a quick and easy to learn interface such as this.

In other words: phpdiplomacy was built for people like this. So it's pretty unhealthy for otherwise good members of the community to go around attacking them.

I think kestas should get a quote from the teacher of the class to put on the site as a testimonial to the benefits of phpd. This is the sort of thing we should encourage.
rtcpmuser1 (100 D)
15 Nov 07 UTC
i am a student in the negotiations class and i think anyone who doesnt believe that we HAD to make another account because a few (not mention names for i am 1 who is guilty) of us made moves over the weekend and screwed things up so our teach had us make new accounts so that we could start a new game and so he could keep record of our passwords (why because HE'S A TEACHER they need to know things like that for reasons like if someone's absent!) . Anyone who thinks we (and when i say we i mean the whole rtc class) are abusing this site needs to take a little field trip to Missouri and meet our teach in person. Then i bet he will gladly explain this ONCE more to you all. alamothe you are a freaking retard!! your talking shit without even knowing what the real deal is! So i believe i have every reason to tell you to go to hell because your an asshole who trying to stop people from having fun! Everyone at the rtc in the negotiations class loves this game . I mean think of it this way be glad we've taken a liking to this game. Its really fun. And people who are trying to ROB people of that type of enjoyment in life should in a matter of speaking jump off a freakin cliff. No one has the ability to do that!! The only reason i'm typing this is because people are making the wrong suggestions about us that could get us kicked off and i felt (because i'm pissed off) that i should help to clear things up abit. i thank the people who understand what we are doing. I have this account and Rtcsparks . It looks like multi accounting but its not! hopefully you all understand more especially after hearing this another time.

General Question
I just attempted to convoy an army from London to Belgium through the North Sea. I also attempted to support this move with my fleet in Holland. So I set the support order to support a move into Belgium and then noticed that I was only allowed to support a move from the North Sea (not from London). I assumed that, since the fleet in the North Sea is "giving its move" to the army that it is convoying, that this was the most logical order of the choices given. However the move failed because of a bounce and I also found this message: "Your fleet at Holland's move support wasn't accepted by the unit which support was being given to."

How do I support an army that is being convoyed?

5 things you can do with your diplomacy board
i will LOVE to buy a diplomacy board but as much i would love to have one, it is just not practical. Right now i have difficulty to find a single go player in my community, imagine how difficult it will be to gather 7 diplomacy players!!

So, christmas is coming soon and i know the christians will like to give me a present to this humble atheist. If by any chance i get a diplomacy board, what kind of use i can give to it?
here is my top 5 things i can do with a diplomacy board;

5. for cutting vegetables.
4. as a living room decorative
3. to teach geography to my kids
2. to throw at the neighbor's dog who always take a dump at my front lawn.
...and the number use for a diplomacy board is...

1. to rub agaisnt my naked body in a sensual paraphilic way.

what is your top 5 useswith a diplomacy board?

A "Some Pretty Wierd Stuff" Thread...
Hello all-

I am a little bored, and I have decided to start a thread about some unusual things in the diplomacy world. For example, where is the most unusual place that you have seen a unit of a particular country? (i.e.- English army in Smyrna, or Turkish fleet in St. Petersburg) If you dont like that, tell me if you have ever seen such a foolish move by a desperate country, that you had to chuckle to yourself about it. (You have 12 units, he has 2, and he still tries to go against you). If you dont like either of those, throw me a bone and tell me something!!! Geez... Happy thinking!
