Dearest Fulminator.. It's a nonsense to suggest that I would be killing the embryos by choosing to save the child and leaving the embryos...The fire will destroy the embryos, not me....Duh. My inaction with regard to the embryos does not constitute a deliberate act by me to destroy them, or as you choose, an emotive description "kill" that reflects an agenda
Yes Deeply Dippy, my post recognised that safety of self in a fire situation is the recommended highest priority, and I briefly raised the possibility of Fire Brigade attending in my post. In real life these decisions can only be made at the time and determined by the specific circumstances.
Yes Ogion, embryos and sperm do not have any legal recognition as "people" in most jurisdictions, so it is, imho, self evident that the child is recognised as a person, and from that, worth considering saving dependant on the extra risk to self involved, whilst embryos are of, in the fire situation, (effectively) irrelevant, of no consequence...A unique, genuine painting by Van Gogh, or Jackson Pollock, or original letter written by Abraham Lincoln in frame hanging on the wall beside the freezer packed with embryos, it could be suggested would have priority over the embryos, but not over the child. Although I might suggest that given the way some parents "raise their offspring" then perhaps the safety of th child is their responsibility, and I may choose to value items of significant cultural heritage / artistic value ahead of some whining selfish delinquent child.
