I understand the rationale for the orthodox attitude towards NMRs & CDs, and agree that in Classic in particular ( & I suppose Ancient Mediterranean, which I only ever played a very few times ) that NMRs especially at the start of a game can really mess with the game.
I also understand that my views on NMRs & CDs are most definitely a "minority" (of one ?) set of views. Recently, last year or so, I've been playing mainly World games that are low points stakes games and NMRs & CDs are common in those games, and as much as they have messed me about, I've been equally messed about by the interlopers who take on CD countries, to the point that it's caused me to choose on rare occasions to deliberately go CD and leave the particular games.
Here's one of the reasons I don't mind NMRs & CDs, or erratic play by inexperienced players.
Before I joined WebDiplomacy I had played for many years F2F games with a particular group of players. It got boring for me because these experienced players would always play the best possible set of moves in any given circumstances. Even the Diplomacy became predictable.
When I joined WebDiplomacy the unpredictable, the anarchic was a new delight, because in the unpredictable, the anarchic lies opportunity.
If you want to avoid games where NMRs & CDs occur, then only join games with a very high Reliability Rating requirement, and where serious points are at stake. Or that are password protected as well. How hard is that to figure out if I can figure it out ?
But if you join open ( not password protected) games with low points at stake and a reliability rating requirement under 90% then don't be surprised if NMRs &/or CDs occur. The lower the reliability rating requirement the more likely NMRs &/or CDs will occur. If it's this type of World game then don't whine about it, just get on with the game. Or leave it, it's only a game after all.
I read some member's rants about the horrors of Political Correctness in forum posts, so please excuse my weary cynicism when the same people whine about CDs in particular and NMRs as well.
Please excuse my view that this "distaste for and criticism of NMRs &/of CDs" is in itself, at times a form of Political Correctness.
We may not always like diversity, but I guarantee that generally monolithic uniformity will be far worse.
And in the wildly unpredictable, the anarchic, for the bold players lies opportunity, maybe not on every occasion, but invariably for some. And if it's not fair or kind, well guess what, Diplomacy is not always fair or kind, whether there are NMRs &/or CDs or NOT.
