@jmo, is his mute list downloaded everytime he load a forum page? (And then loaded into js and used to hide any matching threads from that page.

Seems like a lot of traffic for one page (though it is less mysql, as you shift the data processing for the matching to the browser...)

I feel like there is a better way, like using browser based storage to keep an uptodate list of all the threads a user has muted... (Though that is sligthly new tech to me)

Because I've had conversations with Kestas about it when he implemented which I used to make the rule page suggestions for muting usage which still is pretty much unchanged after the recent rules rewrite.

Yes, all done js side, which is why you can see a thread flash quickly as js hides it after it is loaded. It is a lot of traffic, however since the fundraising drive will include a redesigned forum setup there's not much point to redesigning it now. Especially since it's such a widely non-used feature.

No, what actually crashes is the settings page, not related to the js load.

is there something wrong with wanting attention? Doesn't everyone want some attention? There may be something wrong with certain specific attention seeking behaviours (which are annoying/disruptive) but generally, wanting attention doesn't seem like an issue. It is what you do with it.

i agree a re-design probably isn't ideal.

Though i also think we'd be better off with something other than a forum.

StackExchange style questions and answers system could be integrated, with the built in system for up and down voting answers helping 'self-moderate' - or whatever you call it when the system is smart at determining what are good answers.

I'm sure this would eliminate all the fun i've been having in long threads, but i'm not worried about this.
