Gunboat as Austria: Suicide pact with Italy
Premise: Whenever playing gunboat as Austria and you are attacked by Italy right out of the gate, one should always give up as many centers to Turkey as possible and get your last dying armies onto the boot to drag Italy down with you. This is the only way the madness will stop.

Hey I am not defending Texas just trying to learn what they are teaching us. I mean it is a Uni though.... so they teach national standards? I think Idk here is our textbook

I hate calculus and haven't touched it in years, but yeah implicit differentiation is something you should've learned VERY early on.

we didn't =( it is up next tho.
Lethologica (203 D)
28 Feb 17 UTC
Without implicit differentiation? You mean, you're supposed to calculate the derivative without at some point acknowledging that x = sec(y) and differentiating the secant? I'm not sure how you go about doing that, honestly. Is there even a sum rule for arcsecant? I don't know it.

Teaching yourself implicit differentiation and deriving it that way is probably a better use of your time than doing it some other way.
DammmmDaniel (100 D)

I have been told that I am using implicit differentiation to solve my problem so lawl. I was thinking of straight differentiation which we haven't gotten to yet. Thanks for everyones help!

Odd that you would get art credit for calculus.

Also this doesn't address your specific question, but I found these notes to be very helpful from Calc I-III and DiffEq.

orathaic (1009 D(B))

the derivative is f'(x) = [ f(x+h) - f(x) ] / h

right?
Lethologica (203 D)
01 Mar 17 UTC
Not without the limit, and not as a constructive solution to the specific differentiation being performed.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
01 Mar 17 UTC
Oh my, calculus is so long ago, i forgot the limit (as h->0)

But isn't that the general form, if i was asked to prove any differeniation, i'd probably start there... And then realise i've forgotten how to get the limit of things like that...
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

@OP

So you're saying you haven't been doing the type of stuff described here?

abgemacht (1076 D(G))
01 Mar 17 UTC
Or here?
http://tutorial.math.lamar.edu/Classes/CalcI/DiffInvTrigFcns.aspx
Lethologica (203 D)
01 Mar 17 UTC
The difficulty there is, it's difficult to expand arcsec(x+h), which is necessary to reduce the numerator of the limit to something manageable.

That's why it's easier to switch to x = sec(y) and solve from there. The secant function is more amenable to such manipulations than its inverse.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
01 Mar 17 UTC
Isn't the arcsec(x) = arccos(1/x)? I don't know how that helps, but maybe arccos is easier to work with.
Lethologica (203 D)
01 Mar 17 UTC
That equation is correct, but I haven't seen a direct solution for arccos either.
I'd do an implicit differentiation of x=sec(y), remembering that arcsec(x) = arccos(1/x), as abge said, and that sin(arccos(x))=sqrt(1-x^2).
I never have stuff regarding the arc functions memorized, so I had to look those two conversions up.

ISIS defeated
Trump has defeated ISIS within 30 days as President as he promised. Were not sure how he did it. Were not sure how many nukes it took. Were not sure what the secret plan was. But I for one am glad ISIS is gone. Now we can move on to Anubis, Ra and Osiris. I never liked them either.

Germany attacking Austria in 1901 Spring
Is there any rationale for doing this under any circumstance? I've seen this more often in my newer games and it really perplexes me. Can there be any justification or situation where this is worth doing?
Same goes for Austria attacking Germany in 1901 Spring.
