Results of Ukraine-Referendum in The Netherlands.
A referendum was held about the pending association treaty between the EU and Ukraine. My country is the only country that hasn't agreed yet, because of a referendum with the unofficial outcome: "no" to the treaty. Some 32% voter turnout.
I voted "yes" and the general thought is that many people voted "no" against the EU in general, with Ukraine as collateral.
Thoughts?

The Right to Bear Arms - A Repudiation
So it turns out that the right to bear arms was actually only intended insofar as the usage by paramilitary militia groups in the event of a prolonged and protracted occupation by an enemy. The modern day interpretation of our gun laws is a fallacy perpetrated by the gun lobby to keep people dying, and keep their coffers flowing.

Multiple coasts question
So in a live gunboat game, as Austria I had armies in Serbia and Rumania, and a fleet in Greece. So I set my orders for Gre-Bul (SC) supported by both Ser and Rum.

Is there a place for Diplomacy statistics?
I've been casually reading through Richard Sharp's "The Game of Diplomacy" and he keeps referencing statistics he got from somewhere. I know the book is very dated but I was curious as to if there was still somewhere I could find these statistics and if they've been kept up to date.

Is it possible to have exactly one electron sent through an electric circuit somehow?
What I ideally want is two power sources which send one electron each at the same time into one single electric circuit, observing which route is taken (indirectly).
Thoughts on whether this is possible? Thoughts on how to do this?

How statistically possible is it to only get France or Turkey when you play on classic?
Throughout my 20 or so games that I have played, I have been France and Turkey a disproportionate amount of times. I'm not complaining, it just seems weird. In 2 recent games that just started, I drew Turkey in one, and France in another.

On average you won't get an average distribution

Some of your games as Turkey have been the "Modern Diplomacy" variant, mind you.

@Valis are you just being weird, or do you mean there's some other voodoo about which players get which positions?
kasimax (243 D)

he means that if you play seven games, it is unlikely that you get each country once.
Valis2501 (2850 D(G))

There's no voodoo.

I'm just saying that unless you have 100s and 100s of games don't expect 1/7th of each power in classic. But I'm no statistics expert so I really can't comment further than that. For every person who gets Turkey three times in a row someone else gets Austria three times in a row and someone else gets Italy three times in a row and then there's a bunch more people who didn't get the same power in a row.

I feel like I've gotten Italy in a majority of the games I've played...with a certain group of people. I (and the rest of that group) suspect that the nations are assigned by what WebDip thinks of our relative skill levels.... the newbies get R/F more often, for example.

That said, if the faq states that the country assignment is random... it's random, and you've got a 1/7th chance of getting a country each time.

kasimax (243 D)

gambler's fallacy is only slightly relevant as i believe that atc once mentioned that the system considers past games and change that chances to get a specific country accordingly.

In 9 games where I was assigned a country, I have been France or Turkey 8 times (+ Italy once). If country assignment is determined by a uniformly distributed random variable, I would expect an event at least that extreme about 0.6% of the time. Of course, for people who have played many more games, that degree of streakiness would be quite ordinary.

Of course, the code for this website *is* freely accessible on Github, so anyone can go and check what the actual algorithm is.

There is a small weighting function to make it less likely you'll repeat countries. It isn't that important though
orathaic (1009 D(B))
08 Apr 16 UTC
That also means that if everyone else has been getting Turkey a lot recently, they are weighted to be less likely to get it again, increasing the chances you will get Turkey.

Making the whole thing at least one more level more complicated...
orathaic (1009 D(B))

I think it works on an iterative process. So it first selects the player with the most deviation from average, weights their country chances based in what the have gotten before.

Then picks a country.

Second it repeats for a second player, but they obviously can't get that already picked country - so i don't know if it simply ignores the weights for that... (Unless the algorithm has been changed recently/while i wasn't paying attention) Anyway, it is designed so it should push faster towards average than a random assignment.
Lethologica (203 D)

FWIW, since c0dyz was wondering about his situation in particular, I looked at his record, and the odds of getting any two countries in at least 8 of 14 games is about 49.4%. So this should be an extremely common scenario. There's a game or two that I can't see, and the actual algorithm is somewhat less likely to produce this outcome than a uniformly distributed random variable, but the numbers shouldn't be too far wrong.
From what ATC said last time this discussion came up, the odds weighting to make players get each country a relatively equal amount of times doesn't actually work. For players who joined after July 2013, the function doesn't apply. That means for newer players, it will be random, though statistically it should equal out more once you play a ton of games.

So I met this girl
She is moderately attractive, and plays board games. She is very close to my age and is a soil scientist. I was thinking I would play it slow and do the whole friendzone thing for a while intentionally but with an M. Night Shamalyan twist at some point and I surprise her with a new board game we can play or something.

It is that time again - to see how the citizens of webDip would run a country. Let's plan on starting after the Mafia game, but we can get our ducks in a row now. We will need a volunteer(s) to help run the show. This could take some amount of knowledge and dedication, as well as an unbiased nature.
