I'm in favor of any alliance that includes me.

I hate England, whether I'm playing as it or against it, so I heavily advocate the FG killing off England (unless of course I am England).

Nothing stops a juggernaut like a Western Triple.

England/Russia. Open to the channel, convince Germany to attack France. Stab in Denmark and you've got the whole Western hemisphere sorted out. And it flies under the radar so easily ;)

England and France could, theoretically, work together extremely well, much like Russia and Turkey. And don't get me wrong, sometimes they do work together extremely well. But the English Channel will cause problems. And even if that is demilitarized, there's still the lurking threat of a French Fleet in MAO moving to NAO or an English fleet in NWG moving to NAO. Very careful trust and coordination is required, but if it is achieved, it can be a very strong alliance.

I don't see how E-F works beyond an attack on Germany. England will have too many fleets with nowhere to go with them before long. Idle hands...

Naval dominance? Gosh :).

It depends on how you define naval dominance, really. If it's having twice as many fleets as any of your rivals, it takes a better player than I to not achieve it :). If you mean having so many fleets that you can't be challenged, then you've probably built too many fleets.

I meant it in the first instance - I never seem to have less than five fleets. I'm not expert by any means, but it seems to me that this is one of the things that makes soloing as England difficult. The force structure you need initially is not the same as the force structure you need later on.

Just quickly - I don't think any country really needs more than four fleets. With the possible exception of France and Russia (who might want to have fleets in two theatres).

I'll elaborate later if no-one else has.

As France I once successfully beat England with a single fleet. The number of units is less important than what your diplomacy allows them to do. Whenever I have to resort to supremacy of numbers to get what I want I consider it a little failure.

Although I don't recall ever soloing as England with fewer than 5 fleets. That is partly because I really like fleets, though. Fleets are cool.

A fleet is required to take one of the most critical SCs on the board: Tunis.

Unless you win by taking Moscow or Warsaw. England has functional use for 4 fleets, which you want to get into Mao, Eng, Nth and Bal. That sets up all the convoy chains you'll ever need. You only need more if you're going for Tunis, or if someone else if going for Mao.
