Vaccination Law
http://www.laboratoryequipment.com/news/2015/02/california-aims-limit-vaccine-exemptions

California is considering stricter vaccination requirements, but evidently they are also considering the continuation of a religious exemption, which renders this law useless..

Chris Kyle Day
Last Monday was Chris Kyle Day in Texas. Obama hasn't said a word about his death last year but orders flags flown at half mast for Whitney Houston who died of Cocaine. I went on whitehouse.gov and looked up Chris Kyle. Here's what I got; http://search.whitehouse.gov/search?affiliate=wh&form_id=usasearch_box&query=Chris+Kyle

Any Poli Sci geeks around?
Hi, it's been a while. The political science department at my school can be dead sometimes and I've been looking to bounce some ideas around. I don't know why, but I remembered this site and thought there might be a few of you around with some interest for discussion. I know that for the most part, the discussion on this site is news/opinion based, but I don't know what kind of theory backgrounds some of you might have...

Gunboat Newbie Question
So, is gunboat here just everyone for themselves? Or are there ways you use to form allies?
gwenifyre (100 D)
06 Feb 15 UTC
So, I played gunboat over email like 15 years ago. One of the things that was common was to order moves that weren't even possible but that would support someone somewhere to build allies. Obviously, we can't do that here, and I wonder how that changes things.

Also, I'm playing my first gunboat game here, and I've been ordering (legal) support orders for a neighboring country, but no one else seems to be doing this. Also, since you have to click to see the full orders, I don't know if he even knows I've been trying to support him.
KingCyrus (511 D)

Yes, you can do that. Alliances are common in gunboat. But don't try to contact your allies through any means other than your orders.

if your playing with people you don't understand the concept of gunboat, they may not realize what your doing....but as you play with higher class gunboaters on this site, you will see that change
yebellz (729 D (G))

Yes, many players here do try to use their orders to send signals. Unfortunately, the website does limit the range of orders that you can enter, greatly reducing the expressiveness that you can get away with in nonsensical orders. However, even with this reduced set, you can get some stuff across with support holds/moves to neighbors. Also, don't overlook convoys and "move via convoy" orders, those can sometimes allow for much more options since the system allows orders for any hypothetically possible convoy.

In general public games, you'll find a wide range of skill and awareness when it comes to gunboat (or otherwise). Some players overlook reading the orders in detail, or even just recklessly go it alone, but there are also more serious gunboat players that put in considerable effort to send signals, work with others, and anticipate their allies.

There have been some nice gunboat tournaments on this site in the past. Also, you can try recruiting for or joining a private gunboat game advertised on the forum. That might help with finding players that match your level of experience.

Thanks, everyone. Since I haven't done gunboat in so long, I did a 5 cost game, and I think that's part of the issue. I'll look for more advanced ones next time. I love to play but press can be pretty time consuming.

It's not about the points, it's the people. Most of the better games are 5 point games too. If you want to play a nice game (with the type of players that read the order log to check for signals in GB), you should just recruit on the forum. You'll get to know people soon enough and know if theyre good. Here, I'll start!
