Learning to play with the labmate
Hello everyone,

I have finally convinced one of my friends at lab to start playing Diplomacy after he heard me do nothing but talk about and yell in an almost foreign language about my games at a conference.

Pretty much this. It seems to happen especially when I send a message, stay on the messaging screen, then refresh it a bit later. Whatever my last message was sends again. This is of course in-game messaging, not forum posts.

How do takeover results affect Ghost Ratings?
Is a win, draw, or loss resulting from a takeover counted any differently for Ghost Rating calculations? On the flip side how does a cd affect the Ghost Ratings of those individuals?

Most Favorite National Anthems, Past and Present
I'd have to say that the Soviet Russian, Red Army Choir's version of their anthem is one of my favorites!

with lyrics. Also, I guess it is the only anthem that spent a big part of its life without the lyrics (they were forbidden since the 70s, but don't kill me about the date).

The Georgian anthem,

And the Romanian anthem,

are pretty bad ass IMO.

Nothing beats the old soviet anthem though.

Yes, the GDR/DDR anthem is one of the best national anthems there has ever been. An equally moving East German song is the famous "Workers of Vienna" (which actually dates from 1927):

"Unsurpassed..... except when sung by the crowd at the Millennium Stadium while we're beating England at Rugby"

I guess it must be the rarity value that makes that such a treat. Both Flower of Scotland and Ireland's Call are better ;)

2013 30-3 Wales
2011 19-9 Wales
2011 19-26 England
2009 23-15 Wales
2007 27-18 Wales
2005 11-9 Wales
5 out of 6. "Rarity value" ? ? ?
That's what I love about the English. They never let facts inhibit their prejudices.
Oh and to cap it all, the Post Office have just emailed me to announce they're delivering my tickets today.
Octavious (2701 D)
23 Jan 15 UTC
You're seriously including World Cup warm up matches in your stats? Lol! You have to admire the Welsh and their determination to big themselves up as much as humanly possible. Still, technically you are correct. Alas, a bit of a dry spell is on the way methinks.
thomas dullan (422 D)
23 Jan 15 UTC
@Octavious
I'm sure you would have been wanting to include warm-up matches if they had gone your way. 4 out of 5 is still a lot better than 1 out of 5.
"Technically" correct ? - as in "factually" correct, as opposed to "I wish I didn't have to acknowledge it's true" correct.
"A bit of a dry spell is on the way" ? I'm hoping that your predictions of the future are as accurate as your memories of the past.
The next match is at 8pm on Friday 6th. Don't forget to watch it, because if you lose, there'll be a news black-out on the BBC.
Octavious (2701 D)
23 Jan 15 UTC
Accurate as my memories of the past? My dear Thomas, I was working on the assumption that most people would consider 4 occasions (ok, technically 5 ;) ) since the turn of the century a rare event. Perhaps you don't.

Still, the only stats that matter

6 Nations England & Wales match wins since 2010: England 3, Wales 2
6 Nations England & Wales match wins since 2000: England 9, Wales 6

Long may the trend continue! Looking forward to the game :)
thomas dullan (422 D)
23 Jan 15 UTC
Your initial observation was about matches at the Millennium, but because the facts did not suit your narrative, you change the subject.
Now you give statistics of 6 nations matches since 2000 and assert a "trend".
It's sad this! Poor memory! Poor use of the English language.
A trend is a development over time....
Since 2000.
First 4 matches: E4 W0
Next 4 matches: E2 W2
Next 4 matches: E2 W2
Next 3 matches: E1 W2.
If there is a "trend" at all, it is not in England's favour.
I'm looking forward to seeing in what way you change the subject this time.
Let me remind you, the thread was about Anthems. Maybe you want to mention the manoeuvrability of your chariots. At least on that there may be some agreement.
Octavious (2701 D)
23 Jan 15 UTC
The tread was about anthems, which is why my post was for my preference for the Scottish and Irish rugby anthems. Being Welsh you then went off on one about Welsh victories ;). My initial observation was about the rarity of occasions the Welsh sing it when they're winning, which the facts support 100%. You have now gone out of your way to find a way of looking at the stats that makes the Welsh team look good, which backs my second observation about the Welsh "determination to big themselves up as much as humanly possible".

Sigh... The truth shall out next month. England aren't as good as they should be, so you have a fighting chance. We shall see :)
thomas dullan (422 D)
23 Jan 15 UTC
"England aren't as good as they should be" A good idea to get your excuses in first.
Indeed we shall see. And I'll be there to see it and to sing of it.
Repeat after me .... "Mae hen Wlad fy Nhadau..."
Octavious (2701 D)
23 Jan 15 UTC
Lol! You Welsh do enjoy your rants. If an Englishman dares sound confident you start ranting about arrogance. If he doesn't you start ranting about excuses :p.

Good luck on the Friday. Only two weeks left for debates over whether the roof should be open or not :p.
thomas dullan (422 D)
23 Jan 15 UTC
Rant? Rant? RANT? You ain't heard nothing yet. If you'd spent the last 599 years under the heel of an imperialist foreign government, YOU'D KNOW HOW TO RANT.
Octavious (2701 D)
23 Jan 15 UTC
I'm sure I would. If that had happened to you I dare say you would with ease. Yet impressively you can make a damned good attempt at it even without that background.

Since I only had enough points for Yaleunc's gunboat series if buy-in was14 points or less I'm starting another series for us folks that don't have many points available.

Games will be WTA gunboat, 24 hr phases. Readying up strongly encouraged. Games will run concurrently and there will be 7 games. No country reshuffling. 14 D buy-in, so you can join with 100-ish. I expect people with at least a few games played and high reliability. Signup below.

I know that the stand-off X's on a regular big map are often not accurate (and that issues with the big map aren't related to the order resolution code; see threadID=494283) but I'm surprised to see the stand-off X's turn up in random places in the big map of the "Preview" feature.
