What's an Enemy?
I found that enemies are most enemies that aren't interested in the interests of other friends' enemies and most people are not people that I would make as an enemy because it takes a friend to make an Enemy with interests like those of your enemy. I always hang out with enemies but never with my enemies because our interests are the same.

So what's this thread anyway?

Why marriage at all?
I'm curious. Let's set aside the gay-marriage discussion and ask the question: why (if at all) does / should society *legally* recognize a relationship between two adults, encouraging it by granting it special legal status? What do you think are the reasons this has occurred so widely? Are they good reasons?

What's a friend?
I've found that some of the people that a lot of people would identify as my friends don't interest me and aren't that fun hanging out with for me while there's also one person in particular whom I'm always eager to help out and who is probably the first person I'd go to if I need advice/support/whatever, but I think we're both inclined not to call eachother friends.

So what's a friend anyway?

Seems like a pro map
As a nerd I look at old variants. Imagine this but with one exception: fleets can travel down rivers but armies can't cross rivers. I'm thinking about writing some programming and making this one into a variant (on a separate URL) but who here likes this map? looks like a good map for me.

NFL Pick 'em Week 11: The Playoff Push Kicks into High Gear
Well, sorry, we missed the Dolphins top the Bills...but there's still tine to pick the rest of the week! Among the early games, Bengals/Saints and 49ers/Giants are suddenly two games with four teams clawing at the edges of their playoff races, while in the afternoon, a trifecta of great games--Seahawks/Chiefs, Lions/Cardinals (with the #1 seed in the NFC on the line!) and Eagles/Packers. SNF? Brady vs. Luck and the Pats vs. the Colts! Week 11...it's getting important...pick 'em!

All Supports at a Glance

Especially in live games it's important to be able to see all supports fast. On the standard map of interface not all supports are indicated. Below the standard map you can open a large map, there you see all supports at a glance. Useful instrument, it shouldn't be neglected.

I recited this joke to my wife this morning, and she laughed uproariously. But I'm curious about what the general consensus would be here: humorous, inappropriate, or humorously inappropriate?

How about we make special threads for those who like 'violence' and 'abuse'?
It'd be places where, you know, krellin is allowed to live up to his true potential, and where he can share his love with YJ again through hateful remarks.. Because yes, some of us miss that.

So maybe we can get cut more slack in threads that use a specific thread designation (like *VULGAR*......*VULGAR), warning in OP not to open the thread if you're fainthearted, making clear all threats, hate remarks etc. will be jokes.. Wouldn't that work?

Need a sitter
I have 3 games, all FP, going at the moment. My primary source of contact (Blackberry) has been disabled and I won't be able to check in as often as needed. I really hate committing to something that I can't live up to, and that includes Dip games. I have no idea when I will have a new phone available to make playing more reasonable. So, I'm looking for a trustworthy soul to sit my account for a while whilst I acquire a new phone. PM me if interested.

Variant Alliance Names
I've recently become a tad curious about this. For the classic map, basically every alliance has some sort of name (as you all should be aware) from the Juggernaut to the Lepanto to the Western Triple and so on. I can't seem to find preexisting names for alliances for other maps, no matter how wonderful that alliance could potentially be. Have you all heard of any? Or else what names should there be for some of the alliances in the variants?

Experimental Opening Games - Conclusions
Our games are finished and are cancelled (two are still in limbo, but they'll be cancelled soon enough). I archived the moves in a Google Doc, so if anyone is curious, check them out. There were a number of creative and successful openings, and while it's important to note that everyone was being a bit reckless, it's not hard to figure out what kind of position one might theoretically put themselves in in a more typical scenario with some of these openings.

bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
07 Nov 14 UTC
Sure. Craziest opening, most successful, etc..?
VirtualBob (192 D)
07 Nov 14 UTC
Yes. As far as "Most Successful" goes, a simple SC count yields the following "bests" by country:
Austria -- 8 by VirtualBob (Game IV)
England -- 10 by Vallk (VI)
France -- 6 (tie) by TheReinvented (I), Vallk (VII), VB (VI)
Germany -- 8 by TR (II)
Italy -- 8 by VB (III)
Russia -- 7 by TR (III)
Turkey -- 9 by VB (II)

Worsts would be:
Austria -- 0 by bosox (III)
England -- 2 by VB (IV)
France -- 1 by kasimax (II)
Germany -- 0 by boson (VI)
Italy -- 1 by Vallk (IV)
Russia -- 2 by sanctacaris (VI)
Turkey -- 4 by Vallk (III)

boson ==> bosox ... auto-corrupt strikes again.
VirtualBob (192 D)

I also think it is interesting that Turkey (in general) did so well ... perhaps because the natural position does not lend itself to very many crazy options?

And on the other end of the spectrum, France was not wildly successful ... perhaps because extreme non-standard options for France eliminate its natural advantages?
VirtualBob (192 D)
07 Nov 14 UTC
Oops ... Correction to the above list of "bests" ... sanctacaris scored 9 for Turkey in game VII too.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
07 Nov 14 UTC
Turkey did well because the natural tendency for Austrian players in this game seemed to be "attack Italy because that's something I'll never actually do!" Turkey also tended to attack Russia, which is often a good strategy, and Russia tended to get bombarded by Germany, etc etc. The fact that Turkey had no need to leave any defense for a three year game, unlike Germany or Austria for example, suggests why they were much more successful - they had greater resources from the outset and that disparity only grew.

England was also surprisingly successful in attacking France. I've never preferred that route, but I had a hell of a time leaving Scandinavia to Russia and Germany and simply going all-out on France. I don't know that it's something I would pull often because it requires a ton of armies and a peaceful Russian counterpart, but I'm considering it with more merit than I had before.

i now regret that i didn't try openings that usually don't work because complete trust can't be established, bluewater being an example, or the slingshot juggernaut. would've been interesting to see where this goes.

kasimax (243 D)

if we do craziest, i vote for the anglo-german opening against france in game3 which i was part of. i literally laughed out loud when i saw it succeeded.

Also, I appear to not show up on either list. Too moderate, perhaps?

kasimax (243 D)

also, i thin the reason that turkey did so well is that nobody tried a really unusual opening, like moving to syria.
TheReinvented (1360 D)
08 Nov 14 UTC
Yeah, the unusual openings really favored the normally defensive countries. I also find it funny that even the "Best Frances" had incredibly compromised positions and may not have lasted long after had the games continued.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
08 Nov 14 UTC
I'm surprised to see the German hard-right opening as an "experimental" opening.

I've used that a lot. It relies on a lot of trust from France, but it CRIPPLES Russia if you convince him to open north. It makes Turkey run wild, which keeps Italy and Austria tied up, and usually leads to an England/France fight too.
DeathLlama8 (514 D)

SPRING: F Bre - MAO, A Par - Gas, A Mar - Bur (bounce)
FALL: F MAO C Gas - Por, A Mar - Spa
BUILDS: F Bre, A Par
SPRING 02: F MAO - NAO, F Bre - MAO, Par/Spa do defensive things (Par - Bre, Spa - Gas or Mar)
FALL 02: F NAO, MAO convoy Portugal to Clyde

(obviously involves intense diplomacy)

Thoughts?
sanctacaris (556 D)
08 Nov 14 UTC
Thanks for organizing, bo. That was a lot of fun. I didn't really get out of it what I was hoping to--to test out openings for Germany and Italy--but I enjoyed the wackiness of it, in particular the convoy-happy Anglo-German opening with kasimax. I don't know that we can really learn that much from this, given the odd dynamics introduced by some people playing gunboat and others press, and the fact that we were all doing unusual things simultaneously, but I enjoyed it and would definitely do it again sometime. Especially if I could be neighbors with kasi again.
kasimax (243 D)
08 Nov 14 UTC
i think part of the weirdness stemmed from what is considered an unusual opening. when i saw some openings i thought, well, that might not be the most common opening, but it is certainly one used more often.

Sealion is when you take the channel and convoy to wales, isn't it?
peterwiggin (15158 D)
14 Nov 14 UTC
Typically in a Sealion, France moves to the Channel and then supports Germany into North Sea in Fall 1901. In spring 1902, France and Germany both try to convoy armies into England, the idea being that England cannot stop all of the convoys.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
14 Nov 14 UTC
That's an immediate attack though. Often times it takes the form of MAO/Irish and then a convoy around Liverpool. That is a traditional sea lion.
