What's an Enemy?
I found that enemies are most enemies that aren't interested in the interests of other friends' enemies and most people are not people that I would make as an enemy because it takes a friend to make an Enemy with interests like those of your enemy. I always hang out with enemies but never with my enemies because our interests are the same.

So what's this thread anyway?

Why marriage at all?
I'm curious. Let's set aside the gay-marriage discussion and ask the question: why (if at all) does / should society *legally* recognize a relationship between two adults, encouraging it by granting it special legal status? What do you think are the reasons this has occurred so widely? Are they good reasons?

What's a friend?
I've found that some of the people that a lot of people would identify as my friends don't interest me and aren't that fun hanging out with for me while there's also one person in particular whom I'm always eager to help out and who is probably the first person I'd go to if I need advice/support/whatever, but I think we're both inclined not to call eachother friends.

So what's a friend anyway?

Overweight Women Earn Less
Accompanying article: http://www.theguardian.com/money/us-money-blog/2014/oct/30/women-pay-get-thin-study

I didn't look at the study and I'm not claiming that it's results are false, I hypothesize that a multivariate analysis looking at gender and BMI would show that both men and women who are overweight earn less that their fit peers, but more so for women.

Didn't look at the study either but I think an important question is what causes the corelation. I guess many would jump to the conclusion that overweight women are less likely to get certain well-paid jobs because of their weight, but it's also possible that there's an underlying cause involved such as lack of self-discipline/self-confidence, and it's also possible that people who don't get certain well-paid jobs are more likely to gain weight.

Call me a skeptic, but this article is probably manipulating/withholding information from the study to make the article more interesting. I'm fairly certain that they could have easily taken the gender out of the article and still came with the same conclusions.

But that would have been received with a universal, "Thank you Captain Obvious."

If only there were some way we could verify the article accurately reflected the study...

Oh wowwwww, you read the title. That says a lot.

It's a study conducted by an accredited professor at Vanderbilt. If you want to discredit it, you're going to have to try a lot harder than that.

I didn't read the entire study, but I read through the intro and the results and conclusion sections. The data seems convincing. The only significant deviation on the male side came in the underweight section (probably due to the people in that group being younger) and the overweight section (I have no reasoning for this). Even then, the gross difference between the overweight section on the men side was only about $2 while on the women side both obese and morbidly obese fell significantly outside the statistically significant mark (with overweight just barely falling short of qualification)

I did not check the sample strategy to see if it was sound, but I'm assuming the author would have thought about that if some undergraduate student did, so I'll assume it's solid.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)

There could be intervening variables here, which only serves as further proof that correlation does not equal causation.

For example, I don't see fat chicks working on crab boats or construction sites, both of which are relatively well-paying blue collar jobs. Furthermore, could it be that low-paying female-oriented jobs tend to be sedentary?
thdfrance (187 D)
17 Nov 14 UTC
I'm not gonna lie, I only half understand what the author did to get the data. Apparently she cross referenced data from several different databases which took into account "weight, height, demographic characteristics, employment status, real hourly wages in 2008 dollars, six measures of personal interaction occupational characteristics, and seven measures of physical activity occupational characteristics." (p.12-13) Again, I'm not able to confirm the validity of the cross reference, but according to her it's a valid system. I did check up on the information that the databases she used provided, and from what I saw it seemed representative.

Seems like a pro map
As a nerd I look at old variants. Imagine this but with one exception: fleets can travel down rivers but armies can't cross rivers. I'm thinking about writing some programming and making this one into a variant (on a separate URL) but who here likes this map? looks like a good map for me.

NFL Pick 'em Week 11: The Playoff Push Kicks into High Gear
Well, sorry, we missed the Dolphins top the Bills...but there's still tine to pick the rest of the week! Among the early games, Bengals/Saints and 49ers/Giants are suddenly two games with four teams clawing at the edges of their playoff races, while in the afternoon, a trifecta of great games--Seahawks/Chiefs, Lions/Cardinals (with the #1 seed in the NFC on the line!) and Eagles/Packers. SNF? Brady vs. Luck and the Pats vs. the Colts! Week 11...it's getting important...pick 'em!

All Supports at a Glance

Especially in live games it's important to be able to see all supports fast. On the standard map of interface not all supports are indicated. Below the standard map you can open a large map, there you see all supports at a glance. Useful instrument, it shouldn't be neglected.

A joke from QI, as read by Stephen Fry
I recited this joke to my wife this morning, and she laughed uproariously. But I'm curious about what the general consensus would be here: humorous, inappropriate, or humorously inappropriate?

How about we make special threads for those who like 'violence' and 'abuse'?
It'd be places where, you know, krellin is allowed to live up to his true potential, and where he can share his love with YJ again through hateful remarks.. Because yes, some of us miss that.

So maybe we can get cut more slack in threads that use a specific thread designation (like *VULGAR*......*VULGAR), warning in OP not to open the thread if you're fainthearted, making clear all threats, hate remarks etc. will be jokes.. Wouldn't that work?

Need a sitter
I have 3 games, all FP, going at the moment. My primary source of contact (Blackberry) has been disabled and I won't be able to check in as often as needed. I really hate committing to something that I can't live up to, and that includes Dip games. I have no idea when I will have a new phone available to make playing more reasonable. So, I'm looking for a trustworthy soul to sit my account for a while whilst I acquire a new phone. PM me if interested.

Variant Alliance Names
I've recently become a tad curious about this. For the classic map, basically every alliance has some sort of name (as you all should be aware) from the Juggernaut to the Lepanto to the Western Triple and so on. I can't seem to find preexisting names for alliances for other maps, no matter how wonderful that alliance could potentially be. Have you all heard of any? Or else what names should there be for some of the alliances in the variants?

Noob Confused about Canceling Support w/ Attack
After a 1.5 weeks of playing a lot of live gunboat, I thought I understood that moves/attacks towards a space with a unit providing support to another unit cancel out that support. True, right? Or not? Or sometimes?

Experimental Opening Games - Conclusions
Our games are finished and are cancelled (two are still in limbo, but they'll be cancelled soon enough). I archived the moves in a Google Doc, so if anyone is curious, check them out. There were a number of creative and successful openings, and while it's important to note that everyone was being a bit reckless, it's not hard to figure out what kind of position one might theoretically put themselves in in a more typical scenario with some of these openings.
