I would set him up with a nice Austrian girl while he was still in art school. Maybe he'd settled down and have a life rather than...you know, staging a coup, going to jail, staging another coup and ruining Europe.

Hmm.....good question. I believe I would do the following: I appear in his office following a major loss early in the war in a German uniform, after the social convention of explaining I am from the future and proving so (trust me I have methods to do so) in German, he will ask why I am there. That is when I tell him I am there to inform him of important news from the future, and then I come in real close and say (in German, so he understands): YOU LOST! Then, stripping off the German uniform to reveal a red, white and blue suit, I punch him into a cupboard (where I smuggled in speakers) where the Star-Spangled Banner (or God Save the Queen depending on whether or not the U.S had entered the war) plays. I lock the door for some officer to find him later, and walk off into the sunset, proud of what I did, hoping I did enough to shock him into a downward spiral, ending the war sooner. That is all.

"So that we can ignore history and forget that genocide happens all over the world all the time? Oh wait, we already do..."

not to single you out here bo, but this is a really tired argument. the best way to remember that genocide happens today isn't to talk about a genocide 70 years ago, it's to talk about those genocides happening today. we don't need to talk about Hitler to be aware of this fact or act on it

I mean, next to giving him modern technology or something, but it's up there.
anyway to answer OP, I echo mendax and goldie, get him into art school and set him up
absolutely, because art school would have kept him in a stable and happy life where he would have ignored his megalomania and xenophobic tendencies.
I'd take him to the early 2000s and make him watch my grandmother hallucinating on her death bed that one of his storm troopers was coming to finish the job.
ghug (5068 D(B))
22 Jul 14 UTC
@Santa, wouldn't he just enjoy that?

I'd probably make him look different and stick him in a concentration camp so he could actually experience it.
Maybe maybe not,

If not I'd make him listen to how my Grandparents survived the horrors he created, accepted the nothing that they had at the end of the war, and went on to make a life for my family.

Either way he wouldn't care, neither would violence mean anything to him besides the pain.

Here a fact hitler for all you boys and girls about hitler he never came up with the final solution. Top nazi brass had a secret meeting he didn't even know about. The guys literally discuss what they were going to do with the jews and try to preserve pure aryan blood .
"absolutely, because art school would have kept him in a stable and happy life where he would have ignored his megalomania and xenophobic tendencies."

happy? maybe maybe not, not really my concern tbh
stable? maybe maybe not, but more likely to be stable than his actual life was
ignored his megalomaniacal and xenophobic tendencies? maybe maybe not, but if he's providing for a family and has a job somewhere quiet in Austria, he's less likely to end up launching coups in Germany and founding Nazi Germany

I figure at worst he gets locked into prototypical Western middle class life, snaps and kills like 3-4 people, which is obviously not good at all but vastly preferable to the death machine that was Nazi Germany

I'd give him a copy of mein kampt edited to suggest it was written by someone else. Perhaps if he thought his thoughts weren't original he wouldn't feel the need to prove a point.

Whilst this is a worthwhile forum discussion, does anyone think that history would have been radically different without Hitler. Did he just represent commonly held beliefs? Would everything that happened have happened anyway? Would a better question be what one things could've been done to alter the course of history.

They were pretty much the same dude another fact. :)
Fasces349 (0 DX)
22 Jul 14 UTC
People like to claim that had he gone to art school the world would be very different, but I'm not so convinced:
5 years later world war 1 still would have started, Hitler still would have joined the army, and Germany still would have lost said war. Hitler was very nationalistic and prideful of the German people, he still would have hated the French for the treaty of Versailles and probably still would have joined politics and hated Jews.

So given the opportunity to do anything, what would I do? I'd prevent him from committing suicide, force him to face justice for his crimes.

Lets say Hitler died in World War 1 (he was near-fatally wounded twice during the war, so this isn't a completely unrealistic hypothetical).

National socialism and fascism still would have existed as an ideology, and racism was a widely held belief in Europe at the time, even without Hitler. Also keep in mind that fascist governments took power in Italy, Japan, Austria, Finland and Hungary before taking control of Germany. Germany was still a place in a deep economic depression that increases the likelihood of an extreme government being elected. Had there been another charismatic national socialist in Germany (lets face it there probably was), then Nazi Germany still would have existed even without Hitler.

What? The allies found the evidence that this happened all the people who attended the meeting was suppose to burn all copies of the meeting documents after it was over everybody did but one of them. I would change his plan so he succeeded in taking over Russia. Then I would bring back all the scientific knowledge of nukes I could to hasten the American project then watch as the allies destroy hitler who just destroyed communist Russia. In turn preventing the Cold War and possibly several proxy wars.

The most instrumental figure in the NSDAP's success was Gregor Strasser. Oratorical gifts alone don't build a party. In the absence of Hitler the party would have taken on a more social revolutionary character, and would have had less a cult of leadership in all likelihood. Whether that would have made a difference in terms of foreign policy who can know. Probably to some degree. Like Fasces I don't doubt that the NSDAP would have eventually come to power based on the conditions at the time, but it might have been a more conventional nationalist party.
