...All you whiny thought police wannabees that get so freaking uptight about this word or that are the fodder for my laughter. Because I know that the words that get your panties in a bunch only have the meaning and power that you give them.

Seriously -- think on this...as you read this:

Cutting a support move for your own unit
I'm sure you cannot cut support move for your own unit by hitting the unit that is supporting your other unit. However if another player is supporting the move of your unit would hitting the unit of the other player that is supporting yours cut the support for your own unit.

I posted a message before asking how to access older PMs and got the answer that there isn't a direct link. However, unless I misunderstand something http://webdiplomacy.net/index.php?notices=on points to your notices page. Bookmark that and viola! (Right?)

Question about 'Ready'
If you 'Save' your orders but forget to press 'Ready' does the system process the 'Save' orders or count your turn as having received no orders?
You're orders will go through as entered.
Hellenic Riot (1626 D(G))
20 Jul 14 UTC
It processes the saved orders. The only difference is that if every single player selects "ready" then the turn will move forward immediately, instead of waiting for however many hours are left until the phase ends.
brora (100 D)
20 Jul 14 UTC
Got it. Thank you.

Sorry - another question: how do 'refresh' the turn when a phase ends? Just by refreshing the page? The game doesn't seem to do so automatically.
click "board" at the top.
beside "Home"

No problem :-)

Be careful about mistakenly clicking "Ready" instead of "Save". Those two buttons are very close together and one could easily be clicked when meaning to click the other.
Yes, and then you get that nasty "retreats" screen and you have to make "those" orders. We don't like making them.

It's quite a mystery why the current admin team don't move the ready and save buttons further away from each other.
Draugnar (0 DX)
20 Jul 14 UTC
Because it isn't an administrative task. It's a web developer's task.

"It's quite a mystery why the current admin team don't move the ready and save buttons further away from each other."

Let me just get out my crowbar and pry them apart a bit.

I almost always play on my mobile, using my thumb, and I never felt like they were too close together. Slightly bigger would be nice though.
2ndWhiteLine (2736 D(B))

From a developer's perspective, its a nearly impossible task.
yebellz (729 D(G))

It would be pretty straightforward to increase the distance between the "Save" and "Ready" buttons.

The buttons themselves are found in lines 345-348 of this file:
https://github.com/kestasjk/webDiplomacy/blob/master/board/orders/orderinterface.php

There are several different ways to separate them. Adding a div tag with the desired width (specified via a new "save-ready-separator" class in the global.css file for the sake of clean design) between lines 346 and 347 would put some simple spacing between the buttons.

If more separation is necessary, a more drastic redesign could place the buttons in completely differently parts of the screen.

A different, and possibly better, solution might be to require a pop-up confirmation for the "Ready" button, as well as the "Draw", "Pause/Unpause", and "Cancel" vote buttons (since hitting those buttons by accident is also possible on a phone).
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)

+1, yebellz. I've been thinking we should have confirmation for those actions for some time. Also for mutes - since it's easy to accidentally mute players when playing on a phone.

i heard that the distance between the save and ready button over at playdiplomacy ist just perfect.

What we really need is confirmation before for giving a +1. I still can't believe I accidently +1'ed the daily bible reading thread..
ghug (5068 D(B))

I think it would be best to have the save and ready buttons overlap. If you're readying, you're obviously saving as well. Shouldn't ready be more of a sub-button than a separate button?
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)

I think it's about time the "save" and "ready" process was voice-activated.

The "ready" button could be clicked by using the voice command "Save and ready".

The "save" button could be clicked by using the voice command "Ready to save".

I'm sure this would eliminate confusion and make the site more user-friendly.

In passing, as a 'newbie', I'd like to say what a first class site and community this is....
How quickly Brora's question was answered...
How suggestions for improvements are treated positively...
How relatively minor the issues are...
And now I have found the site on my mobile, too.
Keep up the good work, you folks in admin & development!

"How quickly Brora's question was answered..."
That's actually quite unusual.

"How suggestions for improvements are treated positively.."
I'm actually not certain wether that has happened before.

There are usually positive and quick responses. There are a few people on this site that make a point of helping out with newbie questions.

There are also usually derailments, putting the questioner in the direct line of fire, and old feuds that cross over. But that doesn't take away from the positive, quick answers.

Essay help
So I have to write an essay on the Caribbean, and the topic I chose was the economic effects of colonization in the Caribbean from the 15th to 18th century.
I want the arguments to focus on how colonization benefit or hurt the economy, e.g. gold, sugar, slave trade

Is it okay to ask for help from outside a game?
I would really appreciate some outside help with games I'm playing, kind of like tutoring, and I don't want to ask for help if you feel that it's unfair or whatever. I'm new around here, but enjoying the experience. I haven't played in -cough, cough- years and am glad I found this place. Thanks.

Sir Nicholas Winton
All this one-sided talk of Israel today reminded me why we have a nation in the first place - World War II. It also reminded me why the Jewish religion still exists, because of people like Winton. If you don't know the story:

So fellow United States citizens. This next election in 2016 is going to be my first presidential election. I already have an opinion of who I would like to vote for, for reasons that I have fully developed. I am curious how everyone else feels about Hillary Clinton.
