So where did you hear about the game of Diplomacy?
I was just curious about where you guys heard about this game that I have come to really enjoy. I discovered it a few months back and we actually organized a game at my school which was going to be face to face and we would submit orders on a weekly basis. That didn't work so we were looking up virtual versions and came across this site thus I found you guys.

1 In 4 Americans Thinks The Sun Goes Around The Earth, Survey Says
http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2014/02/14/277058739/1-in-4-americans-think-the-sun-goes-around-the-earth-survey-says

I thought it would be funny to ask a quarter of my friends to answer the question incorrectly for kicks and giggles, but it turns out a bunch of other people had the same idea...

How many countries can you identify?
Inspired by some questionable statistics from the sun/earth thread: How many countries can you identify on the map? Post results here.

Does that have any real merit? It is not an attack on France, but he won't like it... though he is usually gunning for you soon enough...

Colonial Map Varient?
I was curious if anybody knew about this varient, i.e. what it looks like, player countries, etc.
It sounds very interesting to me!

Own it. Best thing about the game is all the wooden blocks you get, which I now use with one of my Diplomacy sets that came with plastic pieces.

Yeah, this variant was published as a seperate board game years ago.
JECE (1253 D)

I've seen it mentioned many places on-line. Some how I misremembered it as an expansion ti the regular board. I guess that's a different, more recent variant.

France controls 'French-IndoChina' ie Vietnam; England controls India (and Aden); Turkey controls the Ottoman empire; Holland controls the Dutch east indies ie Indonesia; China, Japan, and Russia control themselves - the Trans-Siberian railway doesn't work due to a bug.

Best version of diplomacy, is the one with painted metal pieces. Which i highly recommend. (though i don't think it is available anywhere, i may have access to a copy)
JimTheGrey (968 D(S))
15 Feb 14 UTC
You like the one with the metal pieces? Ick. I own it but have never played a game with it. The wood pieces are much more functional. Also, the board for that Hasbro version is too small and too dark.

JECE (1253 D)
15 Feb 14 UTC
I like the metal pieces. I saw recently that they are identical to the Monopoly battleship and cannon, though, ha ha.
JimTheGrey (968 D(S))
15 Feb 14 UTC
The metal pieces do look nice on the new board, the one that comes with cardboard counters, but the board they came with is small and hideous. Plus, the box for that version is huge. Not really portable.

For my money, there's no substitute for the blocks. When you're adjudicating by hand, it's very easy to turn the blocks upright to indicate support. With the metal pieces, I suppose you would lay them down. Not nearly as fun.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
15 Feb 14 UTC
So long as we can agree that the cardboard counters are the worst.

At last, common ground.
JECE (1253 D)
16 Feb 14 UTC
I'm probably biased since that's the version I own, but I doubt that I would prefer wooden blocks or plastic tokens. As for the board, I agree it isn't very pretty. From the pictures of boards I have seen uploaded on-line, I prefer the map where Siberia and Ireland are labeled in addition to Switzerland.
yebellz (729 D(G))

It's a shame that they used such shoddy cardboard pieces for the "50th Anniversary Edition". It seems like they were just interested in putting out something cheap to cash in on the pent up demand after the game was out of print for several years
JimTheGrey (968 D(S))
16 Feb 14 UTC
Yah, but the board from the new set looks really nice. Some of the spaces, like Rome, are way too small, but it's pretty to look at. With proper pieces on it, that is. I won five sets: Two of the classic blue Avalon Hill bookshelf box sets, one that came with plastic stars and anchors but now has my Colonial pieces in it, and another that has the old glossy wooden pieces; the black long-box Deluxe Diplomacy set from 1992 or so; the Hasbro metal piece set; and the new one. I use the Deluxe Diplomacy set most often, typos and all.
JimTheGrey (968 D(S))

Not won, have. I have five sets.

This is the 'board' I was talking about:
http://www.diplom.org/Online/maps/map_c.gif
I guess it's not actually a board after all.

As God appears to have the upper hand in the propaganda stakes on here, I thought in the interest of fairness & editorial balance that this thread could be used for fans of Satan to help his pitch with the floating voters. So if Beelzebub already has a mortgage on your soul, now's the time to start paying off the interest...

Game crashed?
I played gunboat game: gameID=135825 about a half hour ago and it crashed. Couldn't reach the site and now i'm wondering whether this was my problem or if the site was indeed unavailable for others too?
Other websites worked perfectly at the time.

Defence VS Offence
What do you think the strengths and weaknesses of defence VS offence are in war? I personally think that a good offence is 100 times better then a good solid defence. Having a good Defence on the other hand can destroy large numbers of enemies who may attack..... The unfortunate thing about it is most armies now days are mobile enough that they can maneuver around defences.

Draug tries to get addicted again...
OK, so I actually did enjoy myself in that last game, despite the ending and the current vitriol coming from Roka, so I'd like to try again. This will have to be limited to just 20 D for now, but I want another group of top notch gunboat players (Roka need *not* apply) to try and teach me a lesson again. I made it to the top three last time. Think you can kill me earlier?
