So where did you hear about the game of Diplomacy?
I was just curious about where you guys heard about this game that I have come to really enjoy. I discovered it a few months back and we actually organized a game at my school which was going to be face to face and we would submit orders on a weekly basis. That didn't work so we were looking up virtual versions and came across this site thus I found you guys.

1 In 4 Americans Thinks The Sun Goes Around The Earth, Survey Says
http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2014/02/14/277058739/1-in-4-americans-think-the-sun-goes-around-the-earth-survey-says

I thought it would be funny to ask a quarter of my friends to answer the question incorrectly for kicks and giggles, but it turns out a bunch of other people had the same idea...

How many countries can you identify?
Inspired by some questionable statistics from the sun/earth thread: How many countries can you identify on the map? Post results here.

Missing:
St. Vincent-Grenadines, St. Lucia, Kiribati, Comoros, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Tuvalu

My other half can do all of them, including capitals and flags. I fear I have never learned all those damned island nations in the Pacific, regularly confuse my Stans, and there are a few African nations that I can neither place nor spell. Aside from that I'm pretty good.

Kosovo is the Jerusalem of Serbia. Kosovo comes from the word Kos, meaning blackbird in *Serbian*. Kosovo refers to the Kosovo Polje - > Plain of the Blackbird. "Kosova" which is what the Albanians call their new 'country', has no meaning whatsoever in Shqiptar.

Linguistically, some kind of proto albanians were probably there before slavic speaking people entered the area.
dirge (768 D(B))
16 Feb 14 UTC
As for Jerusalem, there is no conclusive evidence to establish a definite linguistic-cultural history of early hebrew. It is uncertain how "indigenous" it is to the area of Israel/Palestine.

I suppose you could take the hebrew bible literally, in which case hebrews are descended from some dude from Ur.

Like Lopt, I can't spell. Can't complete test.

Serbs settled Kosovo in the 6th century. Albanians arrived in the 18th century.

But more to the point, Kosovo has for centuries been central to the Serbian identity - see: epic poetry and ancient monasteries for details. The only reason Albanians have a majority in Kosovo today is because of the Balli Kombetar and their Italian patrons during the early 1940s.

Putin -- I'm just pointing out that there were people living in the area before the slavic speaking people arrived. The people that were living in kosovo and serbia before the "serbians" were more than likely speaking a language related to albanian.

Not that it really matters to anyone.
Putin33 (111 D)
16 Feb 14 UTC
Albanians originated from the Caucasus in an area now in Georgia once called the Avar Khanate. Plenty of Georgian villages have Albanian names or are the names of Albanian tribes. So your claim is disputed, that's all I will say.
Putin33 (111 D)
16 Feb 14 UTC
But it does matter because it's that theory you are proposing that is being used to legitimize the new Albanian state of "Kosova" and the displacement of Serbs from the area.
dirge (768 D(B))
16 Feb 14 UTC
1) I agree with you that it doesn't matter apart from ancient history.
2) I'm not proposing anything.

I suppose if you wanted to gain and learn from such historical facts it would be that all modern ethnic national claims are built on a) selective interpretation of the past and b) myths.

I'll confess that I would google my spelling of the country to get google to autocorrect it for me.

the test should be called "145remember names of countries from the top of your head" because the map is useless aside from some larger countries and double useless once everything starts getting populated

and I call bull shit on Hellenic. Sorry, just being real
if spelling wasn't an issue id have 7 more, I gave up on Trinidad, Burkina Faso, Lichtenstein, Andorra, Bosnia and the other thing, Monacco, and Myanmar

Game crashed?
I played gunboat game: gameID=135825 about a half hour ago and it crashed. Couldn't reach the site and now i'm wondering whether this was my problem or if the site was indeed unavailable for others too?

Defence VS Offence
What do you think the strengths and weaknesses of defence VS offence are in war? I personally think that a good offence is 100 times better then a good solid defence. Having a good Defence on the other hand can destroy large numbers of enemies who may attack..... The unfortunate thing about it is most armies now days are mobile enough that they can maneuver around defences.

Draug tries to get addicted again...
OK, so I actually did enjoy myself in that last game, despite the ending and the current vitriol coming from Roka, so I'd like to try again. This will have to be limited to just 20 D for now, but I want another group of top notch gunboat players (Roka need *not* apply) to try and teach me a lesson again. I made it to the top three last time. Think you can kill me earlier?
