Building a NUC...
I am about to embark on a buying and building journey for church. They were recently donated a 40" monitor and want to set up a multimedia center in the narthex, so I am buying an Intel Next Unit of Computing to drive it. Any gotchas to look out for from you home builders?

A suggestion to deal with inactive players and civil disorder
As you know, having players quit games is an ongoing issue because it unbalances the games. I have a couple of potential ideas:
Ogion (3882 D)
09 Jan 14 UTC

First, instead of requiring a new bet from the person taking over, let them do it for free so it is all upside. I thought the CD holiday give away was a great idea.

Second, having doomed countries walk away is a pain too, since it makes it too easy on the strong countries. Thus, for taking over countries with 1 or 2 SCs, pass the bet or half on to the person taking it over. After all, the player stepping in has nearly no chance of winning the game, but they're doing a huge service to all players still in the game.

Third, maybe block players who quit be barred from joining any new games until after the end of the game they left.

Any other ideas?
Ogion (3882 D)
09 Jan 14 UTC
maybe, for that third one it won't apply if they can find a substitute to take over

The only problem with the entire thing is the best way to do this is to be automated but as you stated in your second reply, there are variables. Mods have stated before that they have enough on their plate without having to deal with this variable system also. If there was a way to make this idea truly automated and done by the site itself and had someone who had time to code and debug it so it worked with the website, I would love to see this implemented.

VDip has a very nice reliability rating system in place that would solve many of these problems. Hopefully it will make its way here so CDs become less of a problem.
Ogion (3882 D)
09 Jan 14 UTC
It should be pretty easy to automate. The value of bets already depend on SC, so just add a rule for the joining table that says if SC >3, joining bet = 0

For the other, you'd need an extra variable AllowedToJoin. When a country goes into CD, the players variable is toggled to OFF. Might be easiest to toggle it off for a fiexed period, say 5days rather than tied to the game left though

Actually, instead of a boolean, make it an int64 with the game id and when the game phase runs, check to see the players with that flag. If they are still in CD then keep it otherwise clear it.
Scoggle (234 D)

See? This is better. Talking through it.

An incentive for people not to quit a game would be to have an option, when a game is created, not to allow people on who have quit in the last month, six months, or whatever.
If you quit, your pool of games available has shrunk, and probably the quality of games available.
Scoggle (234 D)
10 Jan 14 UTC
That would be a good idea. Question though. Do 5 min live games count when say the game starts and you dont realize it. Cant tell you how many late night live games have 2-3 CD's at the start. The only game I have resigned on my record was a live game I missed the start of.
Ogion (3882 D)
10 Jan 14 UTC
Hmm. A game is a game I guess. I'd say don't miss the start or try to recover

'Third, maybe block players who quit be barred from joining any new games until after the end of the game they left. '

you can prevent people from joining your games by password protecting them and then checking thei profile of anyone who wants to play before you send them the password.

Use the forum and only play with members who a reputation or get known to play well.

this has the advantage of building up a community of people on the forum who talk about diplomacy (and not merely trolls, hacks and armchair generals - with myself falling into the last category)
orathaic (1009 D(B))
10 Jan 14 UTC
also, the forum for suggesting new features is : forum.webdiplomacy.net

also the game in inherently unbalanced, and you are supposed to use 'diplomacy' to prevent a player with an 'unfair advantage' from having an easy win. CDs just change what kind of balance you should expect.

The Reliability Rating @ vDip works really well with the 1/2 cost buy-in for taking over countries in CD. It encourages early takeovers of CDd players, even those of weak (soon to be doomed) countries.
kaner406 (356 D)
11 Jan 14 UTC
The only problem is that we occasionally get players who have CDd in so many games (for whatever reason) and have ended up with 0-RR, so the Mods need to contacted to elevate these players (if they decide to return) back to about 10+ RR so that they can join CDd games to get the RR back up again.

@Kaner, I've already asked Kestas to implement them, and it's on his list. I'm more then willing to deal with that slight increase in mod work to cut down on NMR's and CD's.
kaner406 (356 D)
11 Jan 14 UTC
As I said, it's only a very occasional problem. But the benefits of the RR system outweigh this. And the 1/2 cost buy-in for taking over CDd countries fits nicely into this.
Ogion (3882 D)
11 Jan 14 UTC
I want to thank you all for the discussion. I'll start a thread over in forum also (yes, being an asshat is unwarranted!)
VirtualBob (192 D)

I think the best approach to preventing CD's (or penalizing those who CD) would be to redirect all the posts from krellin, putin and any religious 'discussion' (especially the daily bible verse) to the offender's email address.

I had the retreats phase open for a game, and was clicking through the years, and when I fast-forwarded back to present I saw the retreat order because the retreat had been processed right then. It was humorous to see a page with !! for a retreat order under a map with the order shown.

its obvious that everyone here loves to play the game --is there a way that when games could get started you could pick the country you want to play and wait for enough people to join that are willing to play the other countries.

Atheists in the east
How many are there? Relatively more or less than here? Although all the east is fine, I'm especially talking about the countries that are considered to be either hinduistic (not sure if that's how you spell it in English) or buddhistic (again not sure). Think India and the like. Not quite the Middle-East.

Email Hasbro! Let's get Diplomacy for Wii U
I don't want to engage in any arguments about consoles, but I have a Wii U and Diplomacy would be absolutely perfect for the system, for both face to face and online games. I have gone to Hasbro's website and emailed them a request to look into developing a Diplomacy game for the Wii U. It won't take but 10 minutes to do, so let's see if we could make some headway.

2. So, yeah, um, pot...I can't ever do it (not with my medication) but I'm curious...where does everyone fall on legalization?
