Building a NUC...
I am about to embark on a buying and building journey for church. They were recently donated a 40" monitor and want to set up a multimedia center in the narthex, so I am buying an Intel Next Unit of Computing to drive it. Any gotchas to look out for from you home builders?

A suggestion to deal with inactive players and civil disorder
As you know, having players quit games is an ongoing issue because it unbalances the games. I have a couple of potential ideas:

Bug, or Working as Intended?
I had the retreats phase open for a game, and was clicking through the years, and when I fast-forwarded back to present I saw the retreat order because the retreat had been processed right then. It was humorous to see a page with !! for a retreat order under a map with the order shown.

requesting the country that you want to play
its obvious that everyone here loves to play the game --is there a way that when games could get started you could pick the country you want to play and wait for enough people to join that are willing to play the other countries.

Atheists in the east
How many are there? Relatively more or less than here? Although all the east is fine, I'm especially talking about the countries that are considered to be either hinduistic (not sure if that's how you spell it in English) or buddhistic (again not sure). Think India and the like. Not quite the Middle-East.

I Gave Away This Game...

I argue that France' intention was clearly to stab me eventually and being annoyed with his consistent army positions, after making some pretty big blunders, I chose to punish him for it, what's your opinion on this?

Email Hasbro! Let's get Diplomacy for Wii U
I don't want to engage in any arguments about consoles, but I have a Wii U and Diplomacy would be absolutely perfect for the system, for both face to face and online games. I have gone to Hasbro's website and emailed them a request to look into developing a Diplomacy game for the Wii U. It won't take but 10 minutes to do, so let's see if we could make some headway.

Just use the WiiU browser and play webDip.
Chibi-Alex (95 D)

I know I can do that, but webDip isn't designed for face to face, it doesn't support the variants for if you only have 4,5,6 players, etc. WebDip doesn't support voice, video, etc. I know I can play on webDip, I do play on webDip, but I would like a game that I can play with my friends at home, with friends online, with strangers online a la webDip. Also, releasing the game for any of the consoles, but particularly one designed around family play will help introduce the next generation to Diplomacy.
Don't know so much about WiiU - why is it such a perfect match?

Let's not do anything that gets Hasbro's lawyers interested in aggressive action about diplomacy software.

Actually, with the WII U you could pass around the big controller with the screen for each person to enter their orders on and then the TV could display the results. It would be pretty cool.

As far as I'm concerned regarding Hasbro, this site doesn't exist and isn't mentioned in my email, I'm an idiot but I'm not stupid. Secondly, I think Diplomacy is well suited to any console, but the Wii U in particular. First with the game pad. If you are playing a face to face game, the game pad can be used either by a game master or in a hot seat style to enter orders anonymously, then the results can be displayed on the TV, just like the board on webDip. Have you played a face to face game? I'm hoping you have, it is far superior, but the pieces are too big for the territories, it is easy to get confused as to which pieces go where, etc. The game pad also has a built in "face time" style system where if you were playing the game online with friends, you could still do face to face negotiations, which would make for some great chats after a stab! The online game could have Mii characters gathered in a room and you could point and click and request negotiations with any and all countries you choose, etc. I could go on but I just think that a quick email to Hasbro: "Have you ever thought of releasing Diplomacy on a console? I love to play, and I'd like way to introduce it to my friends..." may net us a slick new version.

Buy the board. I do agree having an integrated F2F system for long distance would be nice, though.

@abgemacht: I do have the board, the board is part of the problem. It gets overrun with clumsily designed pieces very quickly. When you have the glut of armies and SCs around Germany overrun, it quickly becomes a nightmare, especially when we play 10 minute diplomacy time, you can spend 5 minutes writing down just your armies' locations before actually negotiating.

Plus, although fundamentally Diplomacy is a fairly straight forward game, trying to teach it to someone can be a nightmare. I'm not saying a full blown tutorial is necessary, but wouldn't it be nice to try and teach some people on a big HDTV the basics and integrate the timer for diplomacy, orders, dispute resolution, etc. A console version of Diplomacy would be stellar. I enjoy webDip, but with all due respect none of you are my friends. I have players whom I trust in the game, who I know will stab, etc., but when will we ever do face to face? Never. I have friends from college and family members who all play, but we live anywhere from one to two hours apart. We can all set aside a Saturday to play every other month, but factor in drive time, kids, etc. It is nearly impossible to play a full game. Integrate the F2F camera, and voila! We can all play, talk to each other, and essentially add the extra time needed by not having to drive. I really do think a console version would benefit Diplomacy in the long run as well, but it is particularly suited to the Wii U, especially since Big N is dead set on family oriented, group played games. Make the game so it is suited to playing face to face, with friends online, and strangers online like webDip, and BAM! A while new door of Diplomacy opens to a greater public.

My friends and I have had great luck using webDip and Team speak to play live games. No video, but you can very easily have private conversations. It's a lot of fun.

I need your feedback ......
I'd just like ti run an idea up the flagpole and see if you salute it ...... would people be up for playing high-stakes games if they could actually purchase webdip points rather than have to wait for years until they were good enough to earn them through playing ??

America Going to Pot? O'Reilly vs. Stewart
http://screen.yahoo.com/comedy-central/burn-notice-bill-oreilly-marijuana-050000837.html
1. I...I have to let John Stewart's first few words speak for me. Every. Single. Word. That whole first clip where he talks before the 2nd O'Reilly clip...yeah. THIS is why you're King of the Secular Show-Biz Jews, pal! ;)
2. So, yeah, um, pot...I can't ever do it (not with my medication) but I'm curious...where does everyone fall on legalization?
