Forced Pauses?

Gentlemen,

I would like your opinion on a particular issue. Should the staff have the authority to pause the game?

My opinion is that they should not. Here is my reasoning:

*Players lack the ability to use pauses for political purposes. Staff should not have that ability either.

*Someone or other is bound to point out that emergencies do happen. But if you're experiencing a genuine emergency, forfeiting a diplomacy game is the least of your worries.

*Diplomacy is in part an endurance match. If someone cannot continue a match for any reason, current rules permit them to defer to their second, subject to league procedures. If a player is unable to find a second, they should be prepared either to default or to seek what settlement they may. Forcing other players to pause a match goes against the spirit of the game.

*At worst, pausing assumes that all parties are able to make time later. This is not always the case.

*At best, pausing is often a stalling tactic.

*Part of the motive for being nice to other players is so that they will have empathy for you if you decide to request a pause. If other players don't want to pause, it is because they don't like you.

1. A tournament

Yes. To enforce this, mods need to be able to pause/unpause games.

Mods will occasionally force pause games for acts of god that affect many of our members. Other than that, I don't think the mods tend to pause games outside of tournaments.

Well let me give you one example where my being able to force a pause is important.

I suspect that someone is cheating in a game. I let everyone know, I pause the game and I email the players involved. If they end up to be playing fairly I unpause and let it continue. Otherwise I cancel the game if they were cheating. If I couldn't pause the game then it would drag on, which people playing differently because they suspected each other of cheating, and everyone would be worried about getting a CD if they didn't enter orders.

Another example:

The site crashes, like has happened before. We pause all games under 12 hours phases to make sure everyone is back online before we resume it. Without this ability players would get CD's on their record because of something that was staff's fault.

There are a few more reasons I could come up with, but I think those two will serve to demonstrate how mods need pause functionality to at least some degree.

Forced pauses are a necessary evil when someone has requested a pause agreed upon in the format (tournament, special game, whatever) and someone else wants to be a prick. The mods need to be able to enforce the special rules of leagues, tourneys, etc. and I can only recall one forced pause in a game I was in that wasn't called for and the mod in question was forced to unpause it that same day for overstepping his bounds.

Staff should have the power to do basically anything, even if they don't use it. Otherwise, somebody will always push the boundaries.

Building a NUC...

Bug, or Working as Intended?

I had the retreats phase open for a game, and was clicking through the years, and when I fast-forwarded back to present I saw the retreat order because the retreat had been processed right then. It was humorous to see a page with !! for a retreat order under a map with the order shown.

requesting the country that you want to play

its obvious that everyone here loves to play the game --is there a way that when games could get started you could pick the country you want to play and wait for enough people to join that are willing to play the other countries.

Atheists in the east

How many are there? Relatively more or less than here? Although all the east is fine, I'm especially talking about the countries that are considered to be either hinduistic (not sure if that's how you spell it in English) or buddhistic (again not sure). Think India and the like. Not quite the Middle-East.

Email Hasbro! Let's get Diplomacy for Wii U

I don't want to engage in any arguments about consoles, but I have a Wii U and Diplomacy would be absolutely perfect for the system, for both face to face and online games. I have gone to Hasbro's website and emailed them a request to look into developing a Diplomacy game for the Wii U. It won't take but 10 minutes to do, so let's see if we could make some headway.
