German Opening Strategies: Update for Online Play

PREFACE: I am really a rather rotten player. I write this not because I enjoy any good measure of skill at the game of Diplomacy, but rather because I enjoy writing.

Drinking Age
What is the drinking age in your society?
This is the most illogical part of America. An 18-year old has the competence to vote for President but not to drink a beer.

quick question
Hi, I used to play many many years ago and now I am back to webdiplomacy. Just a quick question, how many phases do you need to miss for the game to kick you out?

Apologies if this question had been asked before but I couldnt find it in FAQs.

Learn php, javascript, sql, and you're all set...not really, but those are the main languages you'd need to know to code this from scratch. If you're just talking about hosting one you could talk to Kestas about how to host his code on another server, especially if you're considering another language offshoot.

What do you have to offer that gives them a reason to pay ye and not play here?
Maniac (189 D(B))

Prizes would be good. Let people play games for upto £100 or $100 and take 5% from the prize pool. Whilst you can set the payout in advance, you can also allow participants to do deals ie the leader may wish to offer the others a share of the prize pool - all players must agree.

Thanks @jmo that was the answer i was looking for, now how can i learn it for free from the web? Any recommended links? Is it easy? Do i need mathematics(i really suck in math).

What are you intending to put on your website, Taos? Some kind of online game?
Draugnar (0 DX)
08 Aug 13 UTC
@2WL - Good luck when you set it up and start charging. If you use Kestas' code, he can sue you as the license doesn't allow for that. and if the current licensees of the board game get wind of it... Well let's just say you'll be working for the man until you are 90 just to pay off the debt you'll owe them when they finish with their lawsuits.
Draugnar (0 DX)
08 Aug 13 UTC
@taos - Software development can be done by amateurs, but their is a reason it is offered (in the form of software engineering degrees) at university and that those who specialize in it make not insignificant salaries.
2ndWhiteLine (2596 D(B))
08 Aug 13 UTC
I'd obviously give kestas a cut. He seems reasonable.
Draugnar (0 DX)
08 Aug 13 UTC
So you gonna give Hasbro a cut too? They will demand it (doesn't Hasbro currently have the Diplomacy license?)
orathaic (1009 D(B))
08 Aug 13 UTC
@Taos, ok if JMO's answer was good, here's the rest.

html+css, (easy - for displaying content in a web browser)
php and/or javascript (medium - scripting or doing logic php for on the server, javascript for on the users machine, you *can* survive with only one of these... but that probably makes certain tasks harder.)
SQL/mySQL (medium - accessing a database, this site has hundreds of posts/threads/games/users.... they are stored in a SQL database)

I can suggest: http://www.tizag.com/ for some free online tutorials (mostly back the intro stuff) For a bit more detail (or once you want to go into a bit more depth perhaps) I also recommend: http://www.w3schools.com/
And for php, there is php.net
And for mySQL there is: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.6/en/index.html (though i dislike this resource a lot)

I'd basically suggest the first link tizag's tutorial. You can do a lot on your own machine in html/css + javascript without needing to install a thing. Also firefox has some great developer tools (called firebug) while google chrome has them built directly into the browser...

@draug, is hasbro still around? I thought wizards of the coast owned them...

BUT you don't have to give them a penny, because they don't own anything, except the copyrighted name 'diplomacy' the copyrighted rule book. (which is available free here: www.wizards.com/avalonhill/rules/diplomacy.pdf‎ ) the copyrighted map (but you can draw your own map of europe, it's considered public domain... )

They do NOT hold a patent on the ideas for how the rules work. And as such you can make a game which is VERY like this, and call it... um, i don't know, fancypantsdip, no... let me think, dontwannagetsued-dip-game.
Yonni (136 D(S))
08 Aug 13 UTC
(+1)
No, no, no. The business plan should be to take kestas's code to make the basic game like this but we charge users to se the extra features or variants or tournaments. Besides, we'll give it a quick paint job so we don't owe anyone anything. You're over thinking this Draug and losing out on a great investment opportunity.
Draugnar (0 DX)
08 Aug 13 UTC
Then how did they sue and shut down Monopoly on face book forcing it to change significant aspects of the game and come back as a new name with slightly modified rules? Why is it cities and universities have to pay money to them to do games like UCopoly or Cincinnopoly?
Yonni (136 D(S))
08 Aug 13 UTC
Because monopoly enthusiasts aren't as convincing.
I'm sure they'd be able to shut down a gunboating website.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
08 Aug 13 UTC
I don't know draug, perhaps you can look at what the court decided.

You can patent ideas, and i believe wizards of the coast has a patent on the 'tap' mechanic from magic the gathering.

I suspect that hasbro/wizards/avalon hill (not sure who owns the rights) have more money and better lawyers than 'webdip'... and money may be the thing which determine 'truth' in certain courts.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Draugnar (0 DX)

A patent can be issued for an invention that is never actually built. All that is required is the invention be put on paper.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
08 Aug 13 UTC
bankrupt? i can just fail to hire a lawyer, and lose the case... then payout the monies til i'm bankrupted.

I still contend you can't copyright a game (though you can patent it, and copyright the copyrightable parts...) also @Draug: while you're agreeing with me: doesn't IP stand for Intellectual Property? (i mean you're right to agree with me on that part...)

(I stand corrected, in the EU you can't patent "schemes, rules and methods for performing mental acts, playing games or doing business, and programs for computers;" - but things get confusing when i try to understand what's going on in the US)
Draugnar (0 DX)
08 Aug 13 UTC
I'm thinking about patenting the mobile, high-altitude model rocket launch platform. IT's an idea that hasn't been built but is patentable. And its patented name is "the mobile, high-altitude model rocket launch platform" by Draugnar Productions

Thanks for the answers everyone.
When i said sites like this one my intention was about the functionality
Forums, point sistem, etc..not another webdip site, i think this one is great.
about the legal thing: no one will sue you if it is not profitable so webdip with our 2000 players are nothing for any lawyer and no serious company will spend money on some small fish.
I just want to see if i can like build sites, too much time in my hands and don't know what to do. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_RZAGnFcI4&feature=youtube_gdata_player

No particular idea,i just need to get a life or profession.i am not working and have too much time to spare, i trabel alot and can build sites on my laptop, that is the general idea. If you have any suggestions for a site or a game i am open.
I am in a crossroad in my life ,have no family,no obligation,no needs.i was thinking about maybe going to study a degree.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
09 Aug 13 UTC
Thought about writing a book? That's what I'm doing with too much time to spare, building sites is kind of a big deal I'd say, much more of a job than a hobby, at least that's what I'm guessing.

If you are looking for a job that brings in cash, you seem like the guy who wants to be able to relax even when you're working, so... Well, a book could still work if you can write a little, maybe get a band? I don't know, I may just be wrong but you don't seem to be interested in a "normal" job. So this entire post may be useless to you, but hey, maybe it gives you an idea.

I'm working on a webgame at the moment, let me know if you'd like to collaborate.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

Also i think this site uses ideas which are non-trivial, patentable and not owned by hasbro. Ref automated adjudication: www.diplom.org/Zine/S2009M/Kruijswijk/DipMath_Chp1.htm

Of course this being in the public domain doesn't stop it from being patented; but i think it is no longer an innovation. I'm not sure how patent laws deals with previously discovered ideas... But i don't think anyone owns it.
Maniac (189 D(B))
09 Aug 13 UTC
Draugnar - I like you high altitude rocket launch idea, too bad you communicated it publicly - that prevents you patenting the idea.

I have a genuine idea for a great game, but don't have time to patent it, copyright it or whatever. Pity that my genius won't see the light of day because of copyright laws - oh well.
taos (281 D)
09 Aug 13 UTC
I think that if you publish it in a blog for example it can be use as a prove that the idea was published by you first.
But probably it wil depend on the case and location

Dear Krellin, who do you hate?
I'd like to start a game with some cool lefties/decent people, and figured the quickest way to work out who to invite was to ask you who you hated most. At the moment I'm thinking a game with Tolstoy, Major Mitchell, Thucy, Cachimbo, Hecks and Bo-sox would be fun. Did I miss anyone?

The Libertarian Rift
It is often claimed that divisions in the GOP run clearly along statist/libertarian lines, but this is frequently unclear in practice, as there are a good many other divisions and alignments as well (as in the Democratic Party). Here is a particularly clean example of the former, however.

Replacement for Summer League Games
Hi all. I am looking for someone who would be willing to replace one of the seven members in our Summer League. She abruptly decided to give up Diplomacy and her departure has halted our league play.

If you are interested in replacing someone who is in a great position in the League message me and I can send you more information. Thanks.

Could you warn me whenever you read a good argument against you in one of the many threads? I was thinking we might have to recruit some secretaries who can filter out arguments like Kafkatraps, complete fiction, partial fiction, anything including the word nigger, so we can focus on the arguments that can be considered worthy of your time. Post interest in becoming secretary in this thread and I'll get you a form.

How DARE Soldiers Fighting Religious Fanatics Not Be Religious?!
http://news.yahoo.com/u-military-problem-atheists-065000534.html
I find that ironic in the US Military's case (for the above-stated reason)...but it's an issue that crops up every now and again, people thinking that a lack of religious belief MUST mean you're "at risk," or "depressed" or a danger to yourself or others...how about we're not convinced by the "evidence" for God and think that Religion kills (and encourages killing at that) and leave us be?

* Are you afraid of clowns? Grown men in makeup doing socially unacceptable things, often to children? (Like touching, squirting them with water, etc. while hiding behind a mask?) Or are they innocuous fun?
