It's been a few years since I took 295, and I don't remember it that well. I do remember that the turnoff for it in Wilmington can be horrible at the wrong time of day -- enough that once, I decided to skip it and take the turnpike to save a lot of time. (Staying on 95 out of Wilmington, of course, involves you in some back-country roads in PA to get to the turnpike, but it's just about 6 miles of pleasant driving, and they have a rest stop with a map at an obvious juncture).
The turnpike itself is fine in southern Jersey, at least in my experience. Only in the worst traffic would it be bad that far down. As I say, I don't know 295 that well so I can't comment. Given what looked like a serious design bottleneck in Wilmington, I might proceed on the assumption that if the onramp was good, the road probably is too, but I can't promise that.
I don't know how far north you're going, but if you're headed far north or into New York, I recommend considering 287. I always really liked it -- the scenery is far nicer than the turnpike, the traffic is far far better than the north end of the turnpike, and the Tappan Zee (if you're going that far) is a much, much faster bridge than the GW. It is undeniably longer. To my mind, it made up for it in pleasant experience, but that depends on you (and where you're going). The Garden State Parkway is also another good road to keep in mind for northern New Jersey travel.
Good luck.
