Small reminder that voting "Cancel" to signal any kind of communication in a gunboat game is against the Rules. And since this is a site-sponsored tournament I don't think anyone should be planning on *actually* cancelling their games without talking to a TD first.

Cancel signals a desire to annul the game, usually because of some irregularity such as a game-imbalancing CD. If all remaining players vote to cancel the game, points will be returned and it will be as if the game never happened, with the exception of effects on RR.

csteinhardt is right. my answer is in the case of a game with hidden draw votes, where you can see the cancel signal but not the draw signal, some players use it as a substitute for a draw offer.

Using the Pause or Cancel buttons as signals to other players is violating the press rules. For example, voting cancel or pause to signal the desire for a smaller draw is not allowed.

How would one score a player cancelled game, if such were to occur? Asking for a ... actually, just asking for no good reason. I'm certainly not poking Cancel in a tournament game.

And yeah, Valis is quoting from Rule 3. "Don't work around game messaging/press rules." , BTW, just in case anyone needs to know that it really is a site rule.

So cancel signals cancel and thus you arent supposed to use cancel? Or cancel signals draw and thus shouldnt be used? Still makes no sense to me what it signals.

The cancel/draw was an issue in GB games before...I just never understood how or why.

Well in a normal game without TDs or being part of a tournament signalling that you want to cancel and/or actually cancelling is fine. There are legitimate reasons to cancel a game.

Even before HDV voting "Cancel" or "Pause" would 'signal' that you wanted to cut the amount of players before drawing because you couldn't actually vote draw for fear of it prematurely drawing. Or something like that I'd imagine. It's been a rule from before I started playing.

I've always taken a gunboat player's "Pause" or "Cancel" to mean "I think the draw should be reduced by eliminating me." I usually try and take the suggestion.

If I could only convince most players on the site that this should be the standard meaning, I suspect the problem would be solved in short order...

Saudi Arabia routinely executes political prisoners and children, usually by beheading. Over 150 have been executed this year. Another 55 are due to be beheaded in the next few days.
