Who would play a live game tonight?
I've come to realize that I don't have the patience for non-live games much. I need a minimum of 2 days/phase to have the free time to conduct diplomacy appropriately well, and that ends up being too long a game for me to maintain interest. However a live game (being no more than a 3-4 hr chunk of time) is pretty manageable. So I wanna play one.

Who's in?

I'm a Godfather!
I just became a Godfather and I'm wicked excited! With Christmas and his baptism coming up, I want to start thinking about things to do now and in the future. Obviously, it will largely depend on what the parents want, but I was hoping some people could share their thoughts on being a Godparent.
Thanks!

The Greatest People in History Tournament--Nominations
We've done Literature, we've done Music...so, since we're a history-happy lot, why not tackle the (impossible but fun) task of asking "Who was the better general, Alexander or Genghis Khan?" (Though bobgenghiskhan is clearly the answer.) 4 categories: Military/Political Leaders, Artists, Inventors/Scientists, and a "Grab-Bag" category, for all the folks who don't fit in elsewhere. Nominate 1 for each category, and we'll start when we have 64 (or 128, either way.)

I would totally agree except he was nominated as a Leader by Socrates Dissatisfied, whose Wild Card nomination was already taken by Marx.

@TrPrado: It seems to me that the tournament would be best served by having nominees put into the most appropriate categories, even if this contradicts the original suggestion. It does justice to the nominees (not that they care) because they have a better chance at doing well in the category they are most well-suited for.

Some of the Wild Cards are kind of hybrids, which seems fine by me. Alfred Nobel was also a great inventor (dynamite) in his own right, as well as a visionary who created the most famous prizes for the expansion of human knowledge and world peace.

Again, I am all for you editorializing with the nominations as long as it makes the most sense for the event. Some people just look at the list and think of the greatest people they know and shoe horn them into the categories even if they come up with 2 leaders or 2 scientists.

When we talk about major movements we run into trouble. The Civil Rights struggle was a major event in US history, but there were a lot of great men behind it. This problem occurs to a similar degree for the Leader category, and to a much lesser one for the Scientist category.
Yoyoyozo (65 D)
07 Dec 14 UTC
I disagree. With the leader category, the winner should be someone who was able to affect outside of their perspective domain. Adolf hitler (besides the fact that he was a military genius) not only surged his country out of a seemingly endless depression, he was the role model for other countries who suffered, causing socialist movements all over europe. George washington leading the revolutioal war inspired other countries to revolt for their freedom as well, namely france.
TrPrado (461 D)
07 Dec 14 UTC

Yoyo: Hitler didn't inspire socialist movements. If anything, he inspired fascist movements, but even those were more because of Mussolini, who created that movement and inspired Hitler at least somewhat. Hitler's economic model did serve very well, though, and the modern version of it, which is still used in Germany, is something I rather look up to.

Also, I'm probably going to end up switching Olga of Kiev and Malcolm X because they are not in what a lot of us can probably agree are their properly nominated categories.

Is there someone in Scientist that you all would feel would be better in Wild Card? Because I feel it really necessary to move Leibniz. Or do you all think he's good where he is?
Yoyoyozo (65 D)
07 Dec 14 UTC
Oh haha. Well I was never really good at European history.

I'd be good with either Aristotle, Copernicus, or Da Vinci moving to Wild Card.

By my count, we need 3 more leaders, and 3 more wild cards.

I kind of wish that we could bend the rules of mathematics and have an extra few in each category. We're planning on doing it bracket-style, right? I'd rather something more scientific.

Perhaps something where we have 40 for each category, and for each category, we have them in 10 groups of 4. The top 2 of each group advances (yes, like the World Cup). At that point we divide the 20 into 4 groups of 5, and the top 2 advance from each of those. Boom, that's 8, categorical quarterfinals, and then the brackets. Or something like that. What if the top 2 get drawn against each other in the first round?

It will be fun either way, though. I'm just thinking out loud.

Anyway, I'd like to endorse, in addition to TrPrado's picks, Elvis. Revolutionized American music. And why not Steve Jobs if we already have Bill Gates? What was much greater about Gates than Jobs?

Wow, guys, I just realized that all the nominations AND suggestions for Leader are dead. It's the only category with 100% dead people.
Yoyoyozo (65 D)

But I agree, with the iphone being the most recognizable electronic in the world, he had definitely made his impact.
LeinadT (146 D)

@Yoyo: right, that's a good answer.

@TrPrado: Full table (by my count):

Leaders: 0 dead, 29 dead.

Artists: 5.5 alive, 26.5 dead.

Scientists: 4 alive, 28 dead.

Wild Card: 5 alive, 23 dead, 1 toss-up.

Not classic Diplomacy
So I'm new, and just finding my way here. But I've been playing Diplomacy for almost 40 years (anyone else here?)! the interesting thing about the greatest game ever invented by a mailman, is that the main object isn't really stabbing someone, but learning to work together. and being trustworthy. Unfortunately, that's not a version this site espouses! Too bad, but i find the site enjoyable anyway.
