Who would play a live game tonight?
I've come to realize that I don't have the patience for non-live games much. I need a minimum of 2 days/phase to have the free time to conduct diplomacy appropriately well, and that ends up being too long a game for me to maintain interest. However a live game (being no more than a 3-4 hr chunk of time) is pretty manageable. So I wanna play one.

Who's in?

I'm a Godfather!
I just became a Godfather and I'm wicked excited! With Christmas and his baptism coming up, I want to start thinking about things to do now and in the future. Obviously, it will largely depend on what the parents want, but I was hoping some people could share their thoughts on being a Godparent.
Thanks!

The Greatest People in History Tournament--Nominations
We've done Literature, we've done Music...so, since we're a history-happy lot, why not tackle the (impossible but fun) task of asking "Who was the better general, Alexander or Genghis Khan?" (Though bobgenghiskhan is clearly the answer.) 4 categories: Military/Political Leaders, Artists, Inventors/Scientists, and a "Grab-Bag" category, for all the folks who don't fit in elsewhere. Nominate 1 for each category, and we'll start when we have 64 (or 128, either way.)

Not classic Diplomacy
So I'm new, and just finding my way here. But I've been playing Diplomacy for almost 40 years (anyone else here?)! the interesting thing about the greatest game ever invented by a mailman, is that the main object isn't really stabbing someone, but learning to work together. and being trustworthy. Unfortunately, that's not a version this site espouses! Too bad, but i find the site enjoyable anyway.

Staff,

Sorry that some of the youngsters are struggling here, I'll attempt to intervene.

Fellow Players:

I don't think the staff are doing a great job of explaining why I'm not in serious trouble. I'm not in serious trouble because I was not being deliberately disruptive. In general, most authority figure have their hands full dealing with people who are deliberately causing them problems to crack down on people who made honest mistakes.

That's a pretty different tune from the one you were trumpeting earlier...

@YHN,

But what you have to understand, is that your Uncle Al had made an unfortunate mistake last night and had lost count of the bottles. I was afraid to bring this up earlier because I don't want to set a bad example of all of the little Hulkamaniacs out there who look up to me.

I don't always drink, but when I do it's never to excess. With seven players having joined and fifty minutes to spare, I lost count of the bottles of Dos X and was brought to a very unfortunate revelry, which not only inspired my actions last night, but triggered some unfortunately jubilant posts in the forum later.

My head is still pounding so with your permission, I will retreat to nurse my wounds and to think over what I've done.

Reading this thread has reminded me about the hard work the moderators on this site do. I, for one, appreciate their efforts tremendously and am happy the volunteer their time deal with stuff like this.

I enjoy playing games and make an effort to respect the rules. This site has been a lot of fun since I joined a few months ago. And I now know that the moderators are WORKING VERY HARD to make that happen.

Thank you, mods. I support your efforts.

@Al, I don't think the youngsters are struggling. This is a really simple situation. Your lie had no impact on the game, but look at the pain in the ass situation you made for us. The amount of time wasted because your lie caused us extra wok is absurd, which is why you were docked a few points. Because if everyone lied like this we'd never get any real cases done while investigating every falsely proclaimed metagamer.

Clear?
just a question, say in a ftf game of diplomacy you get caught cheating with the whole "allowed as long as you don't get caught" attitude what happens when you DO get caught. If there is no official sanction what is to keep someone from constantly trying besides perhaps, sanction from other players.

I think that Al's continued antics show he really is unrepentant and incorrigible. And he likes that. 50 point slap on the wrist means nothing to him. The message simply did not get through.

@JMO,

Hard work it's caused you? I don't get it. Someone filed a complaint. One of your staff clicked on the admin interface, realized it was me...yet didn't understand that I'm not in the same high school class as the Reinvented? If that caused you or your staff a lot of hard work, I'm hardly sympathetic.

Let's agree to drop the issue for a week or so - you and I have always gotten along rather well so I'd rather avoid saying anything rash. Let's face it, you're not a bad guy but clearly your team has seen a lot of staff turn over in recent months and I feel this is not exactly an accident. I wouldn't want to make things worse by kicking a man when he's down, not an nonsalaried volunteer at an open-source video game.

If I don't run into you for a bit, cheers. Innit.

Uh oh, jmo, better be careful. Al is getting close to his predictable practice of sending you what he thinks is an intimidating private message. The problem is he won't be able to mute you after... So please be nice if he does ever get around to it because the live game community would hate to lose someone as gullible and easy to manipulate as he is.

Nah definitely give the loser and his overinflated ego what he deserves.

@jmo,

Was a thread needed? Perhaps. You are perhaps a better judge of this than I.

Regardless though I have meditated upon the issue and have come to realize that my handling of the situation is not in accordance with the dignity with which I usually conduct myself. As such, I must urge you to consider our years of friendship and to instead accept my apology.

Please let us speak privately to clear the air so that this matter can be put to rest.

Also, let us resolve that the next time we meet at a gaming conference, to share the olive branch of peace.

Hopefully the younger players reading this will understand that my apology is sincere and that an "olive branch" is metaphorical and is totally not some type of alcohol that we will consume.

Game stuck in PAUSE?
A game that involves me ("The classic Is the best") paused over the holiday and all players except one, who was last seen nearly two weeks ago, have long since voted un-pause. The remaining players would like to finish or draw the game.

Are we remaining 6 doomed to look at an unfinished game for eternity, should vanished player never return?
